An Interesting Fact for School's Out fans: Did you know that Jacy
Hunter and Sara Holmes (Amy and Allison) are excellent swimmers….This
is why Sara was chosen to act to almost drown in the lake when their
canoe turns over.

Also listen carefully in the beginning of School's Out at Bronco and
Lucy's party. Check out the swimming pool scene when Amy and Allison
get thrown into the swimming pool while they are all drinking beer.
You will hear faintly within all of the noise, loud music and laughing,
"I can't swim"….She says it in a light, drunken state…I find this is an
amazing foreshadowing technique to the scene at the lake when Allison
almost drowns.
Watch it and let me know…The first scene showing the swimming pool and
the Degrassi characters in swimsuits…Listen carefully as some of them
get thrown into the water.

The funny thing is that John Ianiou played Pete Riley in the Kids of

Hi all,

This is just a short post to ask how many Degrassi fans also watched
the
U.K. show Press Gang? They were shown in Australia around the same time
and
I was wondering if they attracted the same type of audience. If you've
never
watched Press Gang I highly recommend it...

------------> Thanks for the info on the Marc Jordan song at the end of
"One Last Dance" . I checked out his site. I didn't realize he
wrote so many songs (Rod Stewart's "Rhythm of My Heart", etc.).

------> This is from one of your Digest contributors:

In Canoe's Jam, Director Kevin Smith expressed interest in directing a
Degrassi follow up movie. To quote the article

"Smith says he always thought the low-budget Degrassi, which ran
throughout the '80s on CBC, was way better than glossier teen shows
such as Beverly Hills, 90210.

"I thought the fact that they chose realistic-looking people as
opposed to glams was great," says Smith, who passed along his praise to
the producers. I told them if they were ever going to do another TV
movie, I would love to (direct) it."

------> A Degrassi Movie Reunion?!? As unlikely as THAT sounds, let me
know if they
need an Electrical Engineer on set :-).

-----------> I just want to say that I really enjoy reading these
Digests.
Congratulations on doing such a good job bringing the Degrassi world
together. I've
always loved Degrassi, and I've sort of experienced a "Degrassi
rebirth" when CBC
started replaying reruns last fall. Even in re-runs, it is still the
best show on
TV!!! What is amazing is how the show doesn't look too dated (aside
from Spike's
hair, of course:-)).

------> I read your interview with Rebecca Haines a few months back.
Hopefully, one
day, I could sit down & have a beer with the two of you and talk
Degrassi,
Montreal, & McGill (since Rebecca attended it, & I currently am there).

Mark I have some questions, In DJH is Dorothy younger
than Author?

And When did Tessa start being a "main character" of
certain shows, (I mean when was she starting to be
"noticed" as a focus in some episodes in the story
line"?

Thanks,
Bre

Oh yeah mark you are doing a great job with this keep
it up.

*Mark* Yes, Dorothy (Anabelle Waugh is younger than her brother
Duncan). On the she she played his cousin. Tessa got hired for DJH in
the 3rd season. She got more speaking roles in Degrassi High. She did
speak at the end of Degrassi Junior High when the school is about to
burn down.

Hi,

I'm new to this list and wanted to find a Degrassi list so that I could
ask
about some of the music played on the show. You know, at the end of
each
episode they never tell you what songs they were - the credits only say,
"Music generously supplied by a variety of Canadian artists" or
something to
that effect. Is there a web site anywhere that identifies the songs
played
in each episode? I'm creating a Degrassi web page of my own (no, you
CAN'T
have the url, it's not ready yet!!) and I'd like to add some info on the
songs. I can recognize some of them, but there are many which I can't
get.
If this has been discussed before, then please accept my apologies
because,
as I said, I'm new!

Here's a song I'd particularly like to identify. We hear it twice over
the
series. The first time is in the episode "The All-Nighter." It's
playing
in the background after the girls have finished smoking up. Caitlin is
spraying air freshener, and she looks at Kathleen and says, "Kathleen,
are
you all right?" Kathleen says in this strange voice, "Yes, why?" The
other
time we hear it is in the movie "School's Out." It's playing over the
scene
where Amy almost drowns and Snake swims out to save her.

Any help? I'd be ever so grateful...

Thanks, Sue
*Mark* Larry Gowan sang a lot on both series.

Mark, I have a question. Was there ever an episode
made (DJH) explaining why Voula and her family moved
to the suburbs?

Ker =o)
*Mark* It was never explained…The inner city of east end Toronto may
have a bad reputation….Maybe Voula's parents "escaped" to the
suburbs…because they thought the inner city was working class, not
progressive, and that it has corrupted their daughter to shoplift with
Lucy way back in the first season. I think that people are coming back
to the city….I know I would prefer to live in the city centre than the
suburbs, but that is just me….Many young families with young children
or pre-teens like the suburbs, because it may present images of the
middle class social life, safety, security, social cohesion, a friendly
community, unlike the larger anonymous city…However, visiting areas
like Riverdale and the Beaches seem like a nice community as
well…Different people see things in different ways…It was too bad that
there was no reason why Voula's parents moved to the suburbs…I guess
they wanted to keep Voula sheltered and away from Lucy and Degrassi
Junior High.

Here is something that has been bothering me since 1991, something that

wish was stated to me, but never was. Why was the show's production
stopped
after the 5th season, couldn't they push until the kids graduated in
1992, or
another two years until the class of '93 threw their hats in the air?
The
show might have become boring and tired, if it ran for 10 years (like
90210,
Save by the Bell and all of it's reincarnations, I mean 12 seasons of
Screech
is enough!!!!!) Did people know that the 90/91 season would be the
final
year for the show, or was it a suprise to me down in the states
expected for
new episodes to air in the fall. (since we didn't have that thing
called the
internet to get updates back then) That's my answer, hopefully it can
be
answered and I would love to see a Degrassi type of series set in
college, so
much stuff you can do with that!!!

Bobby Millions

*Mark* I knew it would be the last seaon for 1990-1991, because Janice
Kennedy, the person who interviewed the cast for the Montreal TV Times
way back in 1990, discussed that it was their last season and that a TV
movie would come out and that a documentary would come out as well…All
good things must come to an end…Sorry to sound too cliché but it is
true.

Mandy-

You said:

...just a quick note for "j. somerville" who posted to the digest - i'm
curious about your comments regarding "stephanie kaye" on jonovision.
you said
that it was great that she went on the show make-up free, and didn't
try to
appear/behave in a way that's traditionally considered feminine etc.
--and
yeah, I definitely agree, but that has *nothing* to do with what most
of us
have been talking about in response to her performance! from what i've
been
reading, we are all wondering why she was acting like a space cadet.
it was
her behaviour we're mostly talking about, not whether she was wearing
make-up
or not.

Do you realize you just contradicted yourself? My comment wasn't ONLY
about
make-up, or even her general appearance, it WAS about her BEHAVIOUR.
And in my
definition of the word, a person's behaviour is strongly related to
their
appearance, as the two are connected. You can't separate the body and
the mind.

In my post, I wrote:

but now she's a woman, brave enough to be make-up free and act however
she
wants to act, rather than playing the "feminine" role that us women are
told
to play. So she didn't want to sit there, docile, and pretend to be
cute.

Obviously you think how she was behaving was wrong. I don't. Just
think
about the difference between how males are expected to act, and how
females
are expected to act. Take the Jonovision re-union as an example...The
actor
who played Dwayne came out and pretended to beat on the actor who
played Joey.
Why did no-one post complaints about that? It could be argued that his
display of mock-violence was "inappropriate" or "weird."* But when
Nicole, a
female, comes out and speaks up, makes jokes, and acts like herself,
she's
called a SPACE CADET. The difference is that males are allowed to act
in
certain ways that females are not, and vice versa.

And Mandy, there WERE people talking about her appearance only. I
remember
two specific posts, one talking about her hair, and an other talking
about her
winter-scene sweater. So not everybody was just criticizing her
behaviour, as
you are.

*For the record, I don't condemn Dwayne and Joey's bahaviour.

This is the last I'll write of Nicole Stoffman.

I know this is a little late in comming, but I was also at the
Jonovision Reunion, and I thought I would coment on it. It was really
great to see so many of the cast members and all that, but what I was
most shocked by was the people there.

I think it's great that degrassi has a growing audience, but I can't
help but think some of those people really didn't deserve to be there.
Most were to young to have even been aware of the show when it
originally aired. The did not seem like true, hardcore degrassi fans.
There were many stupid questions asked (some were not aired) that any
real fan would not bother with. before the show got started a few
members got to play a degrassi trivia game. Most of the contestants were
absolutely horrible. They knew nothing about the show. It just makes
me upset because I know there were a lot of people more worthy who could
have taken their places in there. I don't think the Jonovision people
handled the hsow well at all. Many of us phoned ahead and were told we
had reserved tickets. these 'reserved tickets' did nothing to get you
into the studio. I was lucky enough to get in because I got there early
enough, but many people were left dissapointed. The people at
Jonovision should have taken some care to let those who did take the
time to reserve tickets in first, not a whole bunch of trendy thirteen
year olds who happened to show up the day of the taping...

*Mark* Let's not be too possessive and judgemental…We aren't better
than the 2nd generation of fans…so if they do not know the show as
well, they will watch the show and become more devoted fans…There is
nothing wrong with a storm of second generation of Degrassi fans..if
they were too young to understand the show, it is great that it is on
now in re-runs so that they can enjoy and appreciate it now. I
understood how you felt at Jonovision, I felt alittle overwhelmed with
the noise and the overly excited audience….I felt old and uncomfortable
at the taping

Hey all you Degrassi fans!

I just started receiving the digest and I wanted to tell you Mark how
wonderful it is! I love being able to read about Degrassi to supplement
my
viewing. :)

Unfortunately, I was too young to appreciate Degrassi when it was on (I
was
7), but I rush home after school every day to watch it on CBC (I'm glad
to
hear it will be on Showcase at 7 :)

Anyhow, I was at the library today picking up some Degrassi books I put
on
hold (the Toronto Public Library has a vast collection of Degrassi
videos
and books, by the way) and as the librarian was handing me my books, he
asked me if I'd ever seen the Wheels episode, since one of the books
was
Wheels. I wasn't really sure which episode he was referring to, but I
said
"yeah". And then he says "Oh, my sister-in-law played Wheels' Mom
before she
died and was cut off the show". I was so impressed...I was like "wow!".
And
as my friend and I were walking out, I told him that it was so cool to
hear
that someone was on Degrassi and that I remember Wheels' Mom and that
she
was killed in a car accident (my friend has never seen Degrassi).
Anyway, I
also told him that I was going to write to the Digest and tell everyone
about it!

On another note, I heard a rumour that a teacher who used to teach at
my
school was on Degrassi. Is there anyway to find out the not-so-famous
cast
members of Degrassi?

Keep up the good work Mark. :)

Laura.

hey there
this is in response to katharine's comments regarding mr. lawrence's
school announcements--it's true, after watching the shows repeatedly i,
too, started to tune in to what he was saying over the p.a. system, and
had a great laugh at some of the comments--really cute and clever! i
can't remember if it was in DJH or DH, but i remember him making
comments about teacherswho were missing! "if anyone knows the
whereabouts of mr. smith, please report to the office..." --soooo
funny! very subtle, b/c not many people are paying attention to the
"background" of the show.

speaking of that--a couple of weeks ago i was watching DH on cbc, and
noticed something (again, in the background) i'd never caught before. i
forget what episode it was in (sorry...), but as you are concentrating
on the main characters, i noticed in the background the "bullies"
(dwayne, tabitha et al) suddenly start picking on innocent
students--tugging on their hair (it was the young woman with the hair
dyed bright red at the top) and shoving them around somewhat. i
couldn't help but burst out laughing, as it was such a funny moment
that i had never noticed before.

it just goes to show the subtlety and hidden humour that the show was
capable of. fantastic :)

take care, everyone.

Amanda Ryan had an interesting question about why Degrassi didn't
continue on into their adult lives like 90210 and such shows. I'm
gonna repeat myself again (those of you who actually read the garbage I
write whenever I post will have heard this before, but ...)--I would
have loved to see Degrassi go on like that, but I think it would have
been too complicated for them to do. The reason, in my opinion, so
many people do not like "School's Out" is that it only focuses on
certain characters, when there were soooo many over the course of the
show who really did get "equal screen time" so to speak. That's why I
loved the show--you had twenty characters or so, and each was pretty
much fully developed. To do Degrassi in an adult world, realistically,
would have required twenty different characters in twenty different
locations. I've always hated shows that have students in high school
going to the same college and sticking together when they're adults,
because that really doesn't happen (at least around me--most of my
friends are in different states, although we still keep in touch).
Anyway, it would have been an interesting, complex web that, if pulled
off correctly, would have been wonderful to see, and I think that was
never done because it just wasn't possible and nobody would have wanted
Degrassi to sell out and take the 90210 route.

Well, c'est ca.

-Tom

OK OK OK OK!
Let's get this straight guys--Nicole Stoffman was acting really weird
on
Jonovision....not Stephanie Kaye! I am not saying this because I'm
jelouse
of Stephanie Kaye or anything,(hello! Sh'e not real!) nor am I putting
down
Stephanie Kaye. (I actually consider Stephanie Kaye as one of my
favorite
characters--remember when she meets the soap star? Ha ha! And when her
and
Wheels are gonna "do it"--too funny.) But let's remember the difference
between actors and the roles they play, people. While I did find Nicole
Stoffman annoying on Jonovision, I have absolutely no problem with
Stephanie
Kaye! I always thought it was a rip off that she got written out of the
show
so early. (Anyone know why?)

Did you ever notice that Liz is in grade 7 before she the episode
"Great
Expectations" Where she just moves in? You can see her walk by all the
time,
and she is in grade 7 sometimes and 8 sometimes. If you look for her
before
that one when she just moves in from lynden, you see her. I noticed
that
like last month.
Well, c-ya

All the best,
God Bless

*Mark* Cathy Keenan was an extra the first season (Grade 7 extra) so
she was only in the background, no speaking lines until season 2, Great
Expectations…She also looked differently, no shaved head, but a
semi-long hairdo with brown hair and bangs..

I was very pleased with the reunion on jono but I was sort of
dissapointed because Wheels caitlin and the twins weren't there. I
thought that Snake,Katheen and Liz turned out to be very pretty. I think
that there should be another Degrassi reunion with ALL of the great
characters!!Thanx DEGRASSI RULES!!!

Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2000 15:46:25 -0500

In reponse to Lauren who thought she saw LD as a runaway lesbian on ER:
I thought I saw LD on the 4/5/6 train in NYC about two years ago. She
was kind of heavy and wearing boat shoes. The laces were made into
little curly cues instead of tied, just like in the 80's. She drank a
cherry icee, and had a lisp! Anyways, I was really excited about her
riding the same train as me and told one of my friends. It turns out
they know for a fact that she owns (or owned?) a thrift shop in Toronto.
Those are all of the LD sightings I've had or heard about, so I'll hope
she made it to California or wherever they film ER.

*Mark* I am almost sure that Amanda Cook is living in Toronto with her
young baby.

To "Natalie White" and also "Miss HaHa", both from Melbourne I am
assuming...

I managed to find a copy of "School's out!" from ABC Video in Brighton.
They
told me they had a copy in the Armadale store as well. I feel the same
about
Degrassi coming back to Australian TV. Timeless television.

You might be interested to know that on Recovery (Australian youth
program,
for all of those outside Oz) about a year ago, Dylan and the gang did a
sort
of a "phone in" poll, where people called in to say which show they
wanted
back on TV the most.

Of course, Degrassi was no 1!

Then Astro Boy

And another of my faves, Press Gang.

Then, came that savior of the universe, Voltron.

There was a list of about 30 shows which people had nominated, and
Degrassi
topped it. It will never die!

Cheers, Tommo Perry

Hi guys.

What exactly was Jonovision?

Thanks.

*Mark* Jonovision is a young adults kind of educational fun type of
show…silly yet interesting with a dynamic, young, and energetic host.

Hey Everyone!!
Okay, I've been getting these Degrassi Digests for about 4 weeks, and I
have
to say, I have mixed feelings, although most are good!

First of all, I'm glad I'm not the only Degrassi Obsessor (to a certain
extent). Kudos to all who love the show just as much as I do!! I
remember
seeing tid-bits of Degrasssi when it was airing for the first time...I
was
about 6. I'm now 16.

Second of all, I'm glad a lot of people like Degrassi, but as far as
pin-pointing exact locations in Port Hope where Wheels was...that's a
little
sad, man. I mean, it's one thing to spot some of your fave Degrassi
characters, and get flustered about it. Anyone would! But going as far
as
KNOWING where the exact spots and locations where Degrassi was filmed
(I'm
not talking about streets in T.O., or the schools. I'm talking about
Port
Hope) is a little over-obsessive.

Third of all, I'm glad that people my age are into the show just as
much as
some other people in their mid-twenties. It's cool!!

Fourth, I'd like express my thoughts on the Jonovision reunion, both
the
audience AND the panel. First off, I caught someone saying that most of
the
audience was made up of the half-assed fans and the 'real' fans had to
wait
outside. Hey, that's not fair. They're just as real fans as you. How do
you
describe a real fan? Someone who knows the friend of the friend of an
extra
that was on the show?? Come one, that wasn't a very well thought of
comment.
I'd also like to comment on the panel. I'm so glad that I got to see
everyone
there!! Steph was acting like a bit of a ditz, but it was nice to see
that
she's still got it in her after all these years. And, sorry, hun, but
people
aren't 'jealous' of her. They were just a little puzzled by her
behaviour.
Kathleen looked great, and when I went to school the next day, everyone
came
up to me and told me how much me and Liz look alike now!! We have the
exact
same style!! Spike looked awesome, and Dwayne was HILARIOUS!!! Joey
hasn't
changed a bit, maybe aged, but, I have to say, Snake looks like he's
pushing
forty. Ms. Avery's hair is BEAUTIFUL!! It's so long!!!! Mr. Raditch
looks
like he's 30!!!! Shane and everyone else not mentioned, I'm glad that
they
were there!! It was interesting to see them after all these years!!

Oh, and another thing...the guy that tried to kiss Liz after the Pogues
concert...I forgot his name...well, he play's "Petrucelli" on "Ready or
Not".
He was the guitarist in Busy's band, Neon Vomit. He has turned SOOOOO
hot!!!

Well, I hope I haven't upset people. That's not what this post was
supposed
to do. Please don't be mad, just think about it!!
