Subject: Kevin Smith wants to direct a Degrassi follow up movie
Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2000 23:51:26 +0000

In the last Degrassi Digest, somebody wanted to know if there is going
to be a Degrassi reunion movie. He is some good news.

In Canoe's Jam, Director Kevin Smith expressed interest in directing a
Degrassi follow up movie. To quote the article

"Smith says he always thought the low-budget Degrassi, which ran
throughout the '80s on CBC, was way better than glossier teen shows
such as Beverly Hills, 90210.

"I thought the fact that they chose realistic-looking people as
opposed to glams was great," says Smith, who passed along his praise to
the producers. I told them if they were ever going to do another TV
movie, I would love to (direct) it."

hi everyone - i see from the last digest some people dumped on stephanie
kaye at the jonovision program. and mark had to comment on it. i don't
understand what they were on about because she was the only one there
who
had the spunk and guts to say radical things ( although joey and snake
did
dominate it a bit ). are some people out there a bit soft and simple ?
there
was nothing at all wrong with what she said or the way she behaved (
but I
didn't understand why
everyone laughed when she said Liz had sold her "oregano" or something -
can you explain that to me mark - what was so funny ?). she was as good
as
gold. without her it would have been a bit boring - she was the spice
and
life of the party there almost. she said
almost exactly what you'd have expected stephanie to say. hasn't
changed -
shes still a babe.

talking about babes i'd like to add I thought spike and kathleen looked
lovely there.

i have noticed there seems to be a number of people out there who are
overly
sensitive to stuff posted in or said and i think they should stop
reacting
to things and allow some latitude - it takes all sorts to make a world.

*Mark* Oregano is an herb, used in some Italian food..it can look like
marijuana (pot)

A few digests ago I posted that I had some Degrassi books for sale. Due

an unfortunate edit, it looked like I had less books than I do. What I
wanted to say is that I have copies of "Spike", "Joey", "Caitlin",

well. All of the books are in excellent condition.

I just wanted to make a comment...I don't know if anyone else read this,
but when I first signed up for the digest they said one of the
conditions
was that you couldn't make any remarks putting down the characters or
the
show. I've noticed that the last few digests have been extremely bitter
towards the characters & their clothes, etc. especially towards
Stephanie
Kaye. I'm not a huge fan of Stephanie Kaye myself, but some people were
down right mean, commenting on her clothes, hair, lack of make-up, and
the
way she was acting on Jonovision. Lighten up, people!!!! I thought you
were all such big fans of Degrassi! And people change, like one person
said, the show was like 13 years ago, I'm sure you've changed a lot too
in
the past 13 years.

On a lighter note, I really enjoy the digest and the show, and I think
you're doing a great job, Mark! Thanks & keep up the good work!

Hello, I just wanted to say that this is a great site, and I am glad to
be on the mailing list. I just recently moved to Canada from the
states, and now I wish I was still in the states, so I could see the
uncut PBS version! I haven't been able to catch the Jonovision or
Schools Out yet, but hopefully soon, and I cant wait. I agree with the
comment about Stephanie Kaye missing a tooth! But I guess that was in
the 80s when they didn't pay to have everyone look like the 90210 and
Dawson Creek people do today, I actually think that is what draws
everyone to this show. They are clearly average looking people, and
teenagers, with bad hair days, and zits.....just like all the rest of
us. Dont get me wrong though, Joey just grows on you! I think Liz was
the sweetest looking girl, punk hair and all! Thanks for a great site,
I look forward to receiving it!

I think I have a story to tell which explains the reason why
everyone is
always talking about Stephanie Kaye and/or Nicole Stoffman the actress
who
played her. When I was in grade 7, I was skinny and flat-chested. All

wanted, all I wished for was Stephanie Kayes body. I was jealous, and
as you
can probably guess, I didn't like her character very much.
When I reached grade 8, you could say my wish came true. Over the
summer
I became almost an exact replica. Now my only dilemma was I was to
scared
and to self-conscious to show myself off, you know that every girl
wanted or
wants to. Now what I wished for was her self-confidence her guts.
Unfortunately I never actually achieved that, but I tried.
So maybe you are talking about her because you are jealous. Maybe
you
feel as though she was the star you never got to be. You never see
guys
complaining about her at the Jonovision reunion. So what if she was a
little
on the tipsy side, I thought she had a sense of humor about things. So
what,
if her outfit was a little
grandma-ish. Why do you care? I will tell you why, because you were
or are
jealous of her. Maybe she was trying to break her stereotype, she did
go for
the covered up look, and she wasn't the Stephanie Kaye who never
cracked a
joke in her life.
When you really look at it, she was the most confident character.
I know
that if I were in Nicole Stoffmans position I wouldn't have been able
to do
my job. I couldn't even wear a tube top in front of my friends, she
did in
front a billion people she didn't even know. She even had the guts to
take a
controversial role where she new criticism would follow, so don't talk
about
her just because you wish you were her.

Andrea

I don't understand why they stop the serie.
I mean, like in 90210 (I KNOW THE 2 SHOWS HAVE NOTHING
IN COMMON) we could have followed the characters into
their adult lives!

Who were Vicky and Rainbow, I can't remember these 2?

And do you have any infos on the rerun of the
Jonovision show? I missed it!!

*Mark* The re-runs of Jonovision come on in March 2000
Cathy Keenan's sister played Rainbow and Vicky was the character with
long curly hair. Her real name is Karryn Sheridan and Rainbow is played
by Anna Keenan.
They were in younger grades.

Hi. I too have had a Degrassi sighting. The girl that played Alison of
the snotty duo Amy and Alison is or was in the Acting program at
Dalhousie. I, in my first year of of Theatre Studies was busy preparing
for an upcoming play when I noticed her standing against the wall
talking with her acting friends. I couldn't remeber where I knew her
from and stood there like a freak staring at her trying to remember and
trying not to look like a stalker. Finally, I remebered and blurted out
"Oh my god, Degrassi!!" Met with stares, I inconspicuously slinked away
only to burst into a fit when I got in the privacy of an enclosed room.
She was looking mighty sexy may I also point out. It's weird because I
didn't even like her on the show, except for the " that's my belt, I
want it back" scene in the bathroom with Amy, but when I saw her I went
nuts. I can't imagine what I'd do if I saw Wheels or Claude or Spike
who, incidentally I have had a crush on for upwards of 12 years. I also
have Annabelle Waugh's autograph on the back of a Molson Canadian
coaster that my friend managed to score for me at a bar in T.O. Also,
Mark I was just wondering what happened to that guy Andrew Sutcliffe who
used to post here all the time about ridiculous stuff like Kosovo and
Columbine(not that that stuff is ridiculous but when it's on a DEGRASSi
newsletter, it is). I made a post about 10 issues ago asking just how
seriously he took Degrassi and went on to jabber about how it is only a
show and some of the kids don't even like to talk about it anymore(i.e.
Wheels- " No, go awee, I'm a grown up now). Anyways, he never responded
and hasn't posted since and then on your end of millennium issue, you
listed him as an "upset subscriber". I don't know if it's just cuz the
format has changed or if his posts are listed in another sector now or
whatever, but I can't help but feel responsble for his deciding to stop
posting, if he has. I only joined around the 66th issue and judging by
his posts and the reactions, he seemed to have been there for along
time. And the guy was posting A LOT! Can you tell me what happened. Did
I piss him off? I didn't mean to and I'm sorry if I did. This is a
letter of protest to bring back Andrew Sutcliffe. Giselle, you know
Geddy Lee? Wow, he really does speak like an ordinary guy. You are my
fact checkin' cuz. Did you know that if Teddy Roosevelt had been born
Geddy Roosevelt, the Teddy bear would be the Geddy Bear? FLY BY NIGHT!!

*Mark* Andrew Sutcliffe chooses not to post as often

curious about your comments regarding "stephanie kaye" on jonovision.
you
said that it was great that she went on the show make-up free, and
didn't
try to appear / behave in a way that's traditionally considered
"feminine",
etc.--and yeah, i definitely agree, but that has *nothing* to do with
what
most of us have been talking about in response to her performance! from
what i've been reading, we are all wondering why she was acting like a
bit
of a space cadet. it was her *behaviour* we're mostly talking about, not
whether she was wearing make-up or not. i don't think we're "ganging
up" on
her, i think we're all just a bit confused as to what exactly was going
on
there! even some of the other cast members seemed a bit hesitant or
unsure
when she was talking, or attempting to make a joke, etc. it was just
wierd.

*and just a wee note for GREG--yes, that was "BLT" on that episode of
the
kids in the hall that you mentioned :)

enjoy degrassi on showcase, everyone!

Hi Mark,
First of all, you do a fabulous job with this digest and I
thoroughly
enjoy it. Thanks alot! I hope your Millennium holiday in New York was a
good
one. I'm a 45-year-old Degrassi fan and I loved watching the junior
high and
high episodes with my son when they first aired. I live in New York,
and
I'm not ashamed to admit I still watch the episodes I have on tape.
Anyway,
I think the scene with Arthur and the peanut butter covered bike might
have
actually been in an episode. Wasn't that scene shown during the high
school
"initiations" show? For some reason, I think I remember seeing it in
that
context.
It was nice to hear about the reunion show and see those photos. I
also
wish Neil Hope had been a part of it. I have to admit I was very
partial to
Wheels since Neil looked so much like my own son.
Oh, one more thing. I agree with Natalie that "Freaks and Geeks" is
an
excellent program---which probably means it won't last long on American
television!

Thanks again,
Siobhan

I really love this list. I'm a major fan of Degrassi, and think its a
lot
more meaningful that just about anything you can find on American
television.
(Because it's willing to deal with topics American tv likes to avoid)
ie:
Homosexuality, teen pregnancy, teen drug use, etc.

What I wanted to know was this: Can you guys tell me what the lyrics

Next time any Degrassi fans are in Port Hope they check out some of the
sites that were used when Wheels goes to visit his biological father
and
runs away from home.
1-the graveyard he walks by is just south of the 401 on Hwy 2
2-when he gets dropped off from hitchhiking at HWY 28 you can see the
cafe
which is one light north of the 401 on Hwy 28.
3-the hotel where his biological father is playing a gig is The
Greenwood
Inn and is located on the east side of Port Hope on Hwy 2 as you near
Cobourg. Its the same hotel that Wheels has a picture of on the
postcard he
got from his biological father.

it
is the bridge that goes over Kingston Road just before Port Union Rd in

Hi, me again about the books, I was reading the book page and it says
there
are 21 books, I went to chapters and all I could find were the Degrassi
talks series, and at Amazon it's only the books about the individual
characters, are these books the ones with the Junior high stories?? I'm
just
a little lost, I want to get the ones with the stories in them, I don't
understand if the books are sort of biographies of the charaters or if
they
are stortline oriented?? Please help me so that I can get the books
that I
want, and the talks series are those just the kids talking about the
subjects or are they stories too?? I know I want Exit Stage Left, but
what
other names do I look for?? I'm not really interested in the Kids Of
Degrassi Street, just from Junior High up!! Thanks in advance!!

Heather

Hello all, i am new to this list and i would just like to say hello.
I am
a huge fan of degrassi and have watched it since i was like 6 years old
(im
now 16). i was so excited when they began to re-air it. It is a shame
that
cbc will no longer be supplying us with this fine quality
entertainment, but
i am overjoyed to hear of showcases' degrassi revival. Degrassi is a
huge
thing at my school, every single person i know loves the show. It is
the
sole topic of coversation in my sociology class. Well anyways i am
just
glad to have found this list and just want to say how much i love
degrassi.
p.s: i know this guys who always wears hats, just like joey
jeremiah!!!!
But i dont think this guy knows who joey jeremiah is....

Hello,

Just a bit of info for anyone who cares...The SHOWCASE program schedule
indicates that LIBERTY STREET will begin airing on January 28 in place
of
Degrassi High on Friday nights at 7:30pm. Another tidbit before i get
on
my way, my sister used to attend elementary school with Nicole Stoffman
and
when she ran into her at the now defunct Crocodile Rock in Toronto as an
adult she pretended not to know who she was or what she was talking
about.(I doubt my sister mentioned Degrassi because she was not exactly
a
fan of the show) For any Degrassi sighting aficionados: Almost every
time
I go down to Spadina & College I see one of the twins or some other
Degrassi actor, it's like some kind of undeclared ex-child star hangout
spot. Well that's about the most stuff I have to offer at this time!

Later,

Emily Cosmic

I was browsing thorugh Degrassi sites when I came across Degrassi
Digest and
although I do not have regular 'net access, I am subscribing to make a
very
important post. From the time I saw the two girls on Jonovision at the
Degrassi Reunion show, I have been really wanting a Degrassi shirt. I
read
Lisa's post about the cool ones she made and, since I'm no artist, I am
asking if someone could please make me one. I would pay for whatever
costs
are necessary (including shipping) and depending on the musical tastes
of my
"assistant" I could make a killer Canadian mixed tape! Please e-mail
me as
soon as possible if you are interested.

--------> Great song! Also, what is the song played at the end of the
last DH
epiode, "One Last Dance"?

------> CBC caved in to complaints, I guess. Or they just realized that
this show
is too classic to take off the air.

Just some new thoughts and opinions of late. I saw the Jonovision
reunion
epsiodes, and I was a little disappointed with the absence of some cast
members, namely Stacie Mistysyn, and Neil Hope. Still it wasn't too
bad,
except I couldn't figure out what was wrong with Nicole Stoffman.... I
did
think Cathy Keenan's remark about suckering Nicole into buying oregano
('cuz
it looks like weed), was pretty funny (my hat is off to her courage,
though). The other bonus, the episode was played on my birthday.
(happy
b-day to me.)
Here's a little trivia for you: Did anyone notice the similarities
between
Spike's house (in the earlier eps.) and Arthur's (in the later one's)?
What
was Erica's original name? - Stacey. It was mentioned in the 1st
episode, by
Ms. Avery. I guess they changed that one eh?
In the "environmental action committe" eps, listen for the
announcements.
The first one goes like "Today's special in the cafeteria is turkey
suprise." The next, "Anyone who had the turkey suprise, please see the
nurse before going home." (or words to that effect).
Favorite Non-Virgin: Spike

Who should Snake end up with: Michelle

Favorite Male Druggie: Luke

Favorite Pot Smoker from Party: Melanie

Favorite Best Friends: Caitlin & Maya (runner up Kathleen and Melanie)

Favorite Dumb Blond: Simon (he's totally out there)

Favorite Character Overall: Kathleen -she's had to put up with a lot!
her sarcasm and cynicism are mirrors of mine (only I'm not nearly as
bitter
as she was).

*Mark* Happy belated birthday. Yes, one of the twins original names
was Stacey…and Arthur and Spike's home were filmed on the same set.

well, this is especially to emma who wrote on 3/12/99.
She wanted to know where you can get episodes of degrassi
in Australia. If you go to any ABC shop they have some of the
episodes as well as the books. However if you are after a copy of
"School's
Out" then good luck. I have been trying to locate
one for about two years. I know that blockbuster videos has a copy in
circulation around melbourne, but we can't find it anywhere.

I agree though. We need degrassi repeats in Australia. I have been
deprived of these since the afternoon show went off air about five
years
ago. There are many people who feel this way. Something needs to be
done!!!!!

from devout and deprived wheels obsessor,
elvis.
