Subject: X-Rated (Liberty Street Pilot) to broadcast on Showcase
Date: Fri, 7 Jan 2000 18:45:56 -0800
X-Rated*** (Liberty Street Pilot) will broadcast on Showcase Television
http://www.showcase.ca/ on Sunday, January
16, 2000 : 7:00 PM ET/PT, 9:00 PM
CT, 8:00 PM AT/MT, 8:30 PM NFLD
Created by the producers of Degrassi, this made-for-Canadian-television
movie served as the pilot for CBC's "Liberty Street" drama series. The story
reflects a group of twenty-somethings as they tackle work, love and
friendships in the big city. Stacie Mistysyn (Caitlin) plays River. Pat
Mastroianni (Joey) was later introduced to the series as Frank, although he
did not appear in the pilot movie. The series was sometimes referred to as
the Canadian Melrose Place.
***Note: The film's namesake was derived from the (now defunct) buzz word
"Generation X". The term was coined by a Canadian writer but was quickly
exploited by the media to stereotype/categorized all 16-32 year olds. Young
people resented the term because it depicted them as disillusioned and
overindulged slackers.
If you would like to Showcase to play the entire "Liberty Street" series,
The "Degrassi Talks" documentary, or Degrassi High's "School's Out!" you can
submit your requests to the following stations

Date: Thu, 16 Dec 1999 15:51:04 GMT
I am obsessed with Degrassi!!
It is the coolest show ever, and I have been really upset that I have not
seen it here in BC (Canada) for like almost a year now. All the characters
are cool, and like real people...thats why so many people like the
show...cuz they can relate to it. It dealt with real issues, and it was
still fun to watch. If anyone knows what movies stores in BC carry the
School's Out movie, or if Degrassi is airing on any channels...

Hi everyone, I just recieved my first degrassi digest and I loved it! Who
would have known the series would become such a classic, I'm really glad I
was able to experience it firsthand, Monday nights at 8pm on CBC it
rocked!(I'm really nostalgic for the 80's) My brother and I have had many
"sitings" the earliest was in the late 80's we saw Tim at Simpsons in
Toronto, Lucy and a bunch of her friends came into a McDonalds I was working
at one summer and I saw Joey at Wasaga beach, most recently we saw Liz
riding her bike in T.O. oh yeah Mia works at the City TV reception desk or
did about a year ago (she isn't really in a wheelchair)Mia said noone has
seen or heard from Wheels isn't that fitting? poor Derek got the shaft- all
the time! Spike and Liz were the best, always wearing awesome t-shirts like
Siouxie,Billy Idol etc... I can't wait for the Jonovision shows, It sucks
that it seems like a lot of half ass fans got in and not the hardcore ones.
By the way, when Showcase was showing the reruns, my brother emailed them
and asked them to show the School's Out movie and a week later they did! It
was just as crazy (and R rated) as I remember! So maybe we should all email
CBC, they'll have it for sure. Take care everyone! Degrassi forever!!!

I was interested in those questions posed by Marius the Mad regarding
viewer favorites. In particular, the choices for favorite best friends. As
far as I can tell, Melanie and Kathleen hated each other. It was by far my
favorite "friendship" on the show as the amount of backstabbing animosity
evident between them was great. Also, how come Alex wasn't included on the
biggest geek list? Probably because of the stylish sport coat he always
wore with his shorts and tennis shoes.
Not asked, but I'll list mine anyway, favorite parents on the show:
Kathleen's mother and BLT's father.

i have lots of exciting degrassi news, at least for me. december 17th, i
went on the degrassi pilgrimage, seeing all the sights. my impressions: i
cant believe how small vincent massey is, and it is now used as a day care
centre, and esl school. basically, what you see in the show is the entire
school. centennial college is almost the same, and also small. even the
dumpster where the zits shot their video is the same. i took lots of
pictures, much to the amusement of my boyfriend. we actually went in the
famous shoppers, and my boyfriend was horrified because he thought i was
actually going to buy a pregnancy test. i have a question for anyone that
might know: is the park that is across from degrassi grocery, the same park
that steph and arthur end up in the episode where steh is depressed? also,
everyone said how vincent massey was so far away from degrassi, like over an
hour, which maybe it is if you are taking the subway. but, i am sure, they
would have driven, and it only took us about 15 min by car via the gardiner.
more degrassi new: my friend who is a filmmaker(he has a business and has
won awards, not just a hack with a camera) edited a film with cathy keenan
because he had to do a film for a guy, who wanted his friends to help, and
cathy is his friend. my friend didnt even know what degrassi was! he also
had to work with her sister anna for something. anna either goes or went to
ryerson for film.so, he was going to go to jonovision, but she(cathy) said
she didnt want a lot of her friends there because she gets embarassed. well,
im finally done.:) lissa

The slumber party episode where Kathleen brings drugs is one of the best

(Snake's older brother), Stephanie Kaye, and Mr. Colby. Imagine if
Colby had molested Glenn when he was in junior high, but Glenn just sort
of enjoyed it. It would make a great episode. Steph is clearly the
queen of "haut-couture", no wonder she went to Europe. I chose Wheels
over Joey, because I love seeing Wheels get befuddled with problems,
it's so funny. BLT is by far the finest athlete, apart from Glenn, and
Alex Yanku is the best student, although Caitlin is really good too. I
love Shane's mental attitude, negative and insolent. Melanie and
Kathleen were a lovely pair, and Bartholomew Bart was the oddest little
guy I've ever seen. Him and his white friend seem like the kind of kids
who would try to plant bombs in the school to get revenge.
I love the show!

Just added to what one reader stated in the last digest issue. Stephanie AKA
Nicole Stoffman went on to play, Ellen Randall, the daughter of Lyle Alzado
in the show called, "Learning the Ropes", which ran in syndication during the
1988-89 season. I remember watching this show a few times on a Saturday
even, but the show was not picked up for a second season. Since then, who
the knows what Nicole has been up. It is too bad she left the Degrassi
series to star in such a ridiculous television series, which was produced in
Canada by CTV. I would have loved to see what she would have looked like in
the high school years. OK, that's it, bye-bye and rest in peace Lyle.

Subject: Snake in a furnace commercial?
Date: Mon, 20 Dec 1999 20:32:04 PST
Is Snake in the beginning of a furnace commercial now broadcasting in
Ontario? I forget what the company's name is, but the commercial is about a
furnace salesman chasing after people in order to tell them about furnaces.
The furnace salesman harasses several people, the first of which is a guy in
a sewer manhole who really looks like Snake. It's uncanny. Then the
salesman sits on a bench next to an elderly lady and she turns off her
hearing aid so she won't have to listen to his rambling. Then the salesman
chases after a jogger who's jogging under the Bloor viaduct (or, it looks
like the viaduct anyway). And the punchline is "Not everyone's as
interested in furnaces as we are" then you see the company name.
So the guy in the manhole really looks like him. Everyone look for the
commercial. It often airs during Degrassi (on CBC, for all you fellow
Canadians out there).
Later.
Jules.
*Mark* YES, Stefan is in a furnace commercial.

I was reading the Monday paper of The Star Ledger and I was shocked to see
what I saw on the inside front cover!!! An advertisement for Degrassi, Jr.
High videos, plus the first 6 episodes of Degrassi High. I wonder what kids
who are 12-16-years-old would think about a series such as this, it may seem
out of date to them, but then again Degrassi never followed trends. OK,
Spike's hair is totally something out of the 1980s, that can't be hidden.
Also, they didn't use e-mail, have piercing over the faces, and have cell
phones. Anyway, the advertisement is in the Dec 20th issue of React, you can
order the Jr. High episodes for $39.95 or the High School ones for the same
price. You d not get the entire episode collection, but you probably get the
uncut versions that aired on PBS in the US. It is just funny to see this all
of a sudden, I mean just out of nowhere comes this! Anway, it's better to
record the episodes of the CBC and save yourself some cash!

Dear Degrassi Fans:
NBC's "Freaks and Geeks" http://www.freaksandgeeks.com/home.html,
the most intelligent and realistic teen drama this season, is in danger of
cancellation. You can help by tuning into NBC on Monday January 10th at 8:00
p.m. The fate of the series will literally be determined by that episode's
ratings. For those of you not familiar with "Freaks and Geeks", it is a
teen drama historically set in 1980. It captures the true atmosphere of high
school: full of awkwardness and embarrassment. Fans have described this
series as "The Wonder Years" meets "My So-Called Life". Sadly, the programs
that depict high school most accurately, seem to disinterest young viewers.
Perhaps it is because real teens are terrified to see an honest reflection
of their own misery.

Hey fellow Degrassi fans!
This is Mohomed,
I wanted to get in touch with the fellow Degrassi fans that I met at the
Jonovision - Degrassi reunion. Unfortunately, I had to leave the reunion
at about 6:29pm (for work at 6:30pm) so I missed the taping of the show!
If you dudes and dudets read this, please email me. I am the guy with
Mr. Radich and Ms. Averi's voices on my cell phone answer machine. And
one of the dude's (sorry I don't remember your name) skateboard almost
hit me where the sun don't shine!
Well everybody, have a totally, radical, amazing, brilliant, fun,
super-duper, awesome, fantastic, exceptional, great, Degrassi Style! New
Year, Century & Millennium!
Take Care,

Subject: Degrassi Reunion on Jonovision
Watching the Degrassi Reunion on Jonovision was truly a dream come true. I
grew up with the Degrassi gang so it felt like I was catching up with my
old friends. I also noticed that the studio audience was filled with
Degrassi Webmasters and the same people who attended the Degrassi
Convention. It's cool how you guys have a network of loyal followers. I
hope that this means that there will be a Degrassi High sequel in the
works. There is a market for a new Degrassi or Dawson's Creek style
Canadian soap.

On Jonovision "Shane" mentioned that Beverly Hills
90210 was fashioned after Degrassi. 90210 obviously
did not plagerize very well because the series never
emulated the hard hitting qualities of Degrassi.
An audience member claimed that Degrassi was superior
to Dawson's Creek. That was a meaningful statement
coming from a 13 year old. The only reason why
Dawson's Creek is so popular is because they are
repeating all the same crap they did on 90210 ten
years ago. Plus they are ripping off ideas from
Degrassi.
Lucy produced and directed videos around school long
before Dawson. The scene where Dawson shops for
condoms was exactly like Joey's scene at Shopper's
Drug Mart. The scene where Pacey and Andie hunt for an
apartment was just like when Michelle and Alexa hunted
for an apartment. Stephanie was the school slut long
before Jen. Caitlin contemplated her sexual identity
long before Jack. Need I go on?

does anyone know anything about the current career of the guy who played
patrick (spike's irish boyfriend) on degrassi high?
i only ask because a couple of weeks ago, while watching the matchmaker
with janeane garofalo and dennis leary, there was a scene at a pub where
the locals hold a singing contest which janeane's character is the judge
of. this youngish guy wins it and then receives a kiss from her in reward.
the winner of the contest looks like a slightly aged patrick and i was just
wondering if it is indeed the same actor.

Hi,
I was just wondering, are the Degrassi Junior High and the Degrassi High
books the same as the T.V. series? Which ones are slightly altered. I was
wanting to pick up a copy for my niece, and I found them all in my public
library, but which ones are like the T.V. shows? Thank you,
Maria Clarence
*Mark* They are based on the episodes, but they are written as an extension
of the episodes (like the continuation, like Degrassi in the summer)

Hello everyone, I've been on this Degrassi list for a long time but this is
my first time posting. I didn't see it posted here (but have been known
to miss things in the past), but on December 23 and 24th (last week) the
Canadian talk show for kids "JONOVISION" had a Degrassi reunion, and a bunch
of the Degrassi cast were guests on the show. Each day was a half hour
long, and we got to see what a bunch of the cast look like now, and what
they are doing.
I have both episodes on tape, and I was wondering if anyone out there who
has a good copy of "School's Out", any "Kids of Degrassi Street", or any of
the "Degrassi Talks" episodes on tape would like to trade for this new
appearance. I would also be interested in any other TV appearances of the
Degrassi cast from any time period. I know some cast members did interviews
on such Canadian shows as Switchback and Midday back when the show was still
in production

Back in high school (in the '80s) I was a geek without a girlfriend,
so I had a crush on Stacie Mistysyn (Caitlin) from Degrassi. Today,
january 2000, I no longer have a crush on TV actresses, and I'm no longer
a geek (well, I hope so), but I'm wondering what she looks like today.
Any idea where I can find recent (1999-2000) pictures of her on the
net? thanks.
Fred

this might sound wierd, but in watching the degrassi reunion on jonovision,
did anyone notice that spike's mouth kinda looked...wierd? as if she had
had surgery, or something?! she was speaking somewhat differently, too--my
friend commented on it as well. we're not loopy, are we?!
aside from that, she looked fantastic--great hair! and "liz" looked
beautiful too--i saw her on the 2nd floor of Eatons (Eaton Centre, Toronto)
this past summer and just stared like a fool--i was completely starstruck.
hey, these kids were my YOUTH, you know?! :)
happy to be a brand spankin' new member!

In the degrassi movie "School's Out" nearing the climax Snake and Joey are
arguing and Snake Uses the "F" word to describe what Joey was doing with
Tessa all summer long. I had Taped this movie over 8 years ago from PBS.
They edited that expletive - what did Snake say in the edited version
instead of the "F" word?
*Mark* That is an excellent question, I wonder what he said…I have only
seen CBC version and the Showcase version which were not edited.

The Zit Remedy story: by Ben Gallant
The Zit Remedy: Hitting The Big Time
By Ben Gallant
(Note: This is the first of four Zit Remedy pieces I intend to write)
It is 1995, Zit Remedy members are all 21:
"And.....stop! Guys, that take was perfect! The album is done!"
The producer slipped off his headset and opened the door to the
soundproof recording room. "Joey, the vocals on that take were
excellent, your best ever! Now there's just the matter of the first
single....."
"No doubt about it, it's Everybody Wants Something!" Derek
(Wheels)Wheeler , the bassist, shouted. The other two members nodded and
spoke their agreement.
"Ok, that's the one I was thinking of, but the video...."
"That's easy! We've already done one!" Joey Jeremiah, (guitar and lead
vocalist) said.
"Joey, it's four years old, and we shot it on Lucy's home camera! You
do remember how poor quality it is, and how we shot it, eh?" the
drummer, whose industry name would simply be his high school nickname,
Snake protested. "We could re-shoot it with modern techniques, and less
'80s style crap."
Joey seemed enlightened by this idea, and that's exactly what they
went and did the next day.
Four months later:
"Everybody Wants Something" has did much better than anybody could've
hoped, the video reaching #1 in MuchMusic's countdown, holding the spot
for three consecutive weeks, and is still in the countdown at #21 of 30.
It also reached number 3 in the actual national charts, and the album
has gone gold in Canada, the only place it has been released so far. The
second single "Just A Kid At Heart", dedicated to a schoolmate of the
band, Dwayne Andrews, who died of AIDS two years earlier and featuring
another schoolmate, Liz O' Rourke (also a big star in the Canadian music
industry with her band Spiked Too Young, a reference to her old best
friend Christine "Spike" getting pregnant at fourteen) sharing vocal
duties with Joey, has just been released and the video is set to enter
the MuchMusic countdown next week. MuchMusic has also booked the Zit
Remedy for one of the best honours a Canadian musician can receive, an
Intimate and Interactive special where the band performs several songs
between Q&A sessions with fans in the building, over the phone, fax and
the "new" (it is 1995) medium of e-mail.

Degrassi World #49 -James, by James Hausler
A new character is added to the Degrassi High fray.
His name is James and he goes to DH since he changed
schools from Borden. He is 17 years old and a senior
who works on his car (an old one like Clutch, he is
friends with Clutch and Paul) He is big, muscular and
athletic (but not into sports)Very mean looking and
intimidating. He is actually in honors classes but is
in a grade higher(two more than Tessa) so they do not
know this.
One day while driving home in his gray 1985 buick
regal, he sees Tessa and offers her a ride. She
refuses since she does not know him and he is about 2
1/2 times her size. He blows it off since most people
are intimidated by him. One day she delivers a paper
to the math wing of DH. She sees him in with the
preps doing college calculus. She wonders a little
more about James. The next week he is walking to his
car and Tessa says waitup. He is a bit startled to
hear her. She says "I need a ride home and I saw you."
"I thought you did not like my car or somthing?" "No
that's not it, I just did not know you that's all."
He is surprised at her change of heart. However she
is less than enthused about his taste in
music(Slayer:Reign in Blood) but she gets over it by
staring at him (and his Death metal tee shirt)and
their deep conversation. They find out that they have
a lot in common (but things that you would never see
on the surface like how they treat their friends and
bowling) All of Tessa's friends hate James at first
but in getting to know him they become much more
tolerant. Soon her friends see how nice he really is
and how smart he is and soon they too wish that they
had a boyfriend like him. In the meantime James'
friend Clutch says "She's a little hottie." "I know
but she is pretty cool too, once you get to know her."
But Clutch thinks he wants her for sex, when in fact
he is really liking her. Not like the other trampss
at Borden who he used to date. Although James is
interested in Tessa, he is also interested in Tabi who
he grew up with. She is very jelous of Tessa and all
of the other preps. (In responce to #36, James comes
over with Dewayne and gives Tabi a B-day present a day
late. (Dewayne and James are her only true friends at
DH) She really likes him and Dewayne, but Dewayne has
a secret crush on her and they begin to date. Dewayne
and Tabi make an awesome couple and double date with
James and Tessa. Although they break up when James
goes to college a year later, they continue to be
friends even after she has her baby by Joey. James
and Tabi continue to be friends and date while he is
in college. She gets a job bartending and he comes by
for a drink every once in a while. He becomes her
best friend when Dwayne dies of AIDS
This was submitted by James Hausler a loyal Degrassi
fan from Waukegan, Illinois. At 15 I took a trip to
Toronto (Just to see Degrassi) and had my mother take
my picture in front of a Degrassi street sign. Thanks
I really like your site. When I saw this section I
had to submit something to it. I always wanted to be
a in Degrassi as myself, and in this sense, now I
have. Thanks!!!
