Madison is now on right after Degrassi on Direct TV's TRIO Network. Madison

is highly revered by Degrassi fans for being realistic and gutsy. I think

it used to be on CBC. TRIO also plays the equally intelligent Northwood.

Encore's WAM plays Kerrisdale and Press Gang, well worth watching.

Hi Mark,

It would be great if I could take a look at your honours thesis. The

Degrassi/90210 section of the course I am teaching this term is over now,

but I'd love to read it for my own interest. I am only over here in Germany

until July 18, though-- then it's back to Canada (and hopefully finishing my

masters degree!). However, if you don't mind sending me a copy here, and if

it's not too costly for you, here's my address:

Take care,

Jeff

*Mark* When you are in Canada, I can meet up with you and give you a copy. I will be in London, ONT next to Kitchener/Waterloo. (as of September 1999)

I read that some guy wants to have the chords to the song.

They are

G C

They'll take your money

G

And never give up...

It's just that repeated over and over until the end.

I agree with Andrew, I would rather see people than animals die or

suffer. Animals are innocent; humans are the ones who cause pain and

wreak havoc.

*Mark* I agree, but it does not mean all humans are horrible and deserve to die.

This thread of posts are getting off topic....Let's steer back to Degrassi.

I still maintain that the best line in Degrassi is:

(that one's for you Charlie)

*Mark* Yick made that dumb comment, a bit immature as if she were useless.

In a message dated 99-05-21 15:11:37 EDT, you write:

<<

<<I'd rather see people die than see helpless little animals

suffer.>>

I'm sure the families of all the victims of the Columbine High School

tragedy

in Littleton, Colorado would appreciate that sentiment Andrew. Perhaps the

Kosovar Albanian refugees and Serbian (and other) civilians would appreciate

it as well.

Grow up Andrew, PLEASE.

Demetra >>

Sorry folks, but I have little compassion for people who push other people to

their very limits so that they finally lose their minds and do things they

ordinarily wouldn't do. Granted people can use this as an excuse to do harm

to others, but there are limits people. There are limits to what a person can

take before they start to lash out and harm others.

What does this have to do with Degrassi? Very little. But I do recall that

scene where after Joey was told he was going to have to enter special ed and

that big guy who eventually got HIV started in on him and wouldn't leave him

alone, Joey snapped and finally attacked him. Would he have "normally" done

that for no reason? Probably not.

You can draw all the parallels you want to here.

Subject: DEMETRA'S COMMENT

Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 16:06:41 +1000

I cannot see the relevance of Demetra's comment last Digest telling me to grow up in relation to man-made tragedies like at Columbine High and in Kosovo. I was talking about naturally caused diseases in relation to testing on helpless animals. And that is what LIZ was also on about. Just because we are the dominant species on this planet does not give us any moral right to mistreat other species. The very fact it is humans that caused those tragedies supports the fact we may not be worth saving. Think about it Demetra - our species has done more damage to this planet and its environment than any other. Experts know that the maximuim sustainable long term population on this planet is limited to 200 million people - another factor that necessitates the requirement for diseases to be allowed to run their course - which they will irrespective of medical efforts.

I am a believer in the notion that what will be will be and we should not necessarily try to change what fate has coming. One only has to look at the fact despite all the biological testing in the last 50 years viruses constantly mutate and adapt to survive and and we are losing on that front. When I was in school they had a vaccine for TB and now they don't even bother to issue them because of the fact it is changing ( I know because I went to get a booster shot a couple of years ago from the health dept and they told me they don't bother anymore ). They still haven't got a cure for HIV AIDS or for cancer.

And as someone who does not subscribe to this weak and spineless attitude the we saw after the Columbine High incident - that it was the guns that shot the people ( guns can't discharge unless people are operating them ) rather than those two idiots ( who reportedly were also homosexuals - just like some of the killers in Australia in recent times - but the media keeps that part quiet ). The cause of the Columbine incident from my anaylsis is that it was caused by class and peer group social attitudes at that school - by mistreating the fringe minority who don't fit in - and it appears they took revenge. Kosovo similarly. It has nothing whatsoever to do with animal rights.

I suggest Demetra replay the Degrassi episode on animal rights and look at the video Liz played of the monkey and rabbits suffering, bearing in mind the information I've supplied above, and then think about what she has said.

*Mark* Got to hand it to Andrew for causing conflict.

Subject: QUESTIONS

Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 00:45:22 +1000

MARK some questions about the show:-

Were the Gourmet Scum and the Savages real bands or made up names ?

Was Michelle's father a known actor and if so what shows has be been in ? ( I always liked his suits - same as mine - black with blue shirt & dark tie - one of the reasons I thought he was cool ). He was the best of the adult actors I thought - really believable.

What is the definition of a NARBO ? ( That term wasn't in use in Australia when I was a teenager and I doubt it is today ).

*Mark* Gourmet Scum and SAVAGES were not real bands. (The only real bands were the Pogues)

I do not about Michelle's father, because the character was played by two actors.

NARBO stood for The term N.A.R.B.O.S. is an acronym for "No Acting Required, Bowl of Soup". Although the meaning has been mistranslated by the cast and crew. I coined the term from a Russian film director who produced a film about an old man looking sad and desperate. In the editing the director juxtaposed a bowl of soup, creating the illusion that the man appeared hungry for the bowl of soup. The NARBOS statement was directed at the background players. I wanted the students to act natural, to just be themselves. The hardest thing is to tell a bunch of anxious teenager to relax and ignore the camera. I didn't want them appearing hungry for bowls of soup.

This was taken from the Kit Hood interview part 2 from Degrassi Legacy.

Ebay has a personal shopper service that finds auctions based on key words you type in. I submitted the word Degrassi and they e-mail me each time a Degrassi book, poster, or videotape goes up for auction. Amazon.com also has an auction service that gets Degrassi stuff from time to time. Amazon also sells mint condition Degrassi books.

Dancing on the Moon, a coming-of-age tale directed by Kit Hood (who also

directed the Degrassi series) is playing on HBO Plus in May and on The

Movie Channel in June. This week DOTM will be featured at the China

Children's Film Festival in Beijing.

DOTM is a really sweet movie, it's about a thirteen year old girl whom over

the summer gives up her imaginary friendship with her stuffed dog (he comes

to life in her mind and protects her like a guardian angel) to become a

young woman. Maddie unlike her boy crazy, image minded best friends, is not

interested in being cool and sophisticated. Instead she lives to amuse

herself with goofy antics and dare devil stunts. Over the summer Maddie

learns some important life lessons. Especially the importance of cherishing

each moment and not taking her friends and family for granted. Maddie

makes her theatrical entrance into adolescence with a funky new makeover

and sassy attitude inspired by her free-spirited, gypsy aunt.
