Degrassi fans would probably like the Warner Brothers show "Seventh Heaven". Unlike the other shows Dawson, Felicity, Charmed, Buffy this show depicts teens in a true life sense. 7th Heaven can be melodramatic at times but I would rather see corn-ball wholesomeness than trashy content.

Have you ever noticed a funny scene in Smokescreen when they have a meeting of the environmental action committee...behind
Caitlin's head there's a sign on the noticeboard "Wheels, meet me in the caf
at lunch, love Stephanie" or something like that (I can't find the piece of
paper I wrote it on, and it may be behind Susie's head.) Anyway, I thought
it was funny that it was there.
Does anyone have Harem Scarem's first album? I recently got it from Andrew
Sutcliffe and I can't stop playing it. I waited 6 years for it, so I'm glad
I like it!
Til Later,
Rowena.

I saw that exact episode which was what made me go onto the degrassi
website! I couldn't believe it when I saw him on CHANGE OF HEART!!!
However, I have a different theory all together. I think that the dates
that the original couple are set up with are actors! As a matter a fact, I
think that I heard them call him "DEAN"?! I could be wrong of course, but
that is what I thought. I am so excited that someone else saw it! I
thought that maybe I was losing my mind. I live in Toronto, and I have
spotted several of the cast members from time to time. Actually, I recall
seeing "BLT" at the Eaton Centre not all that long ago.
Hmm....Interesting....

Kevin Smith if you read this digest, here is a great idea. Make your next
movie in the same style as the rest but instead of using Hollywood actors,
use the real characters from Degrassi. Don't use the names of snake, Joey,
Wheels, but use the people, Pat, Stefan, and Neil. That would be the
greatest movie ever to hit the screens.

Hey Mark,
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on the questionaire-- I'm assuming
your hon. thesis is done by now, so I guess my input really won't be of much
use.
I just wanted you to know though: I'm currently doing my M.A. at Waterloo--
but I'm finishing my degree abroad in Konstanz, Germany. At any rate, I've
been given the chance to teach a few English courses here-- one of them
entitled "Area Studies North America"-- and I chose to make the heading of
this area studies course: Pop Culture in Canada and the U.S. I did a whole
section on Degrassi and 90210, and a student of mine (god, I feel so old
saying "student of mine") found your essay on the net, and it was talked
about in our class in an oral presentation (which has about 40 people this
term)! So basically, I just wanted you to know that the stuff you are doing
is great-- and really interesting.
Take care, and all the best,
Jeff Yull
*Mark* WOW! My paper was talked about in Germany...I feel honoured :-)

Subject: Clerks Ref., etc.
Hi, this Papool Chaudhari once again with another little contribution. First
of all, I wanted to address a post I read in a digest a few months ago where
some dude said it was obvious from the BLT/Michelle experience that
interracial dating doesn't work and shouldn't happen. I feel if you limit
yourself to your own race, you *will* be missing out big time. On top of that,
I am asian and I am mainly attracted to white women. Even if I dated someone
of my *race* (What happened to just the human race?), people would think "Oh
yeah, look at him dating his own race because he is only attracted to his own
race" This is insane and people should just look at people for who they are,
and not for the color of the melanin in their skin! We're all people, we all
deserve the same respect.
Now, on to "Clerks" Clerks is the funniest movie I've ever seen, don't just
watch it for the so called Degrassi reference, you're only cheating yourself.
The only reference is that a girl is named Caitlin, that's it. Now go watch
the movie and seriously enjoy it, it's not worth your time if you are just
looking for a Degrassi reference. Oh yeah, watch Mallrats and Chasing Amy and
enjoy them too. Gotta go, Dawson's Creek is comin' on. I'm out

Dayo Ade (BLT) played John Okri on "My Own Country", a 1998 made for TV
movie that was filmed in Toronto, Ontario. The story takes place in
Tennessee, circa 1985 when AIDS was first spreading from big cities to small
rural neighborhoods. Based on a true story it is about an East Indian doctor
who tackles the AIDS epidemic as his personal crusade. The number of
patients he takes on overwhelmes his life and causes strain on his marriage.

Just to clarify the "Clerks" question. Here are the three Kevin Smith-degrassi references:
1. The jacket in "Mallrats."
2. In "Chasing Amy," Banky says that he is going to order a pizza and watch "DJH." Holden replies: "You have a weird thing for Canadian melodrama?" Banky: "I have a weird thing for girls who say 'aboot.' "
3. The character "Catlin Bree" in "Clerks" is named for Degrassi super-cutie Caitlin.

*Mark* Here is the reply I sent him personally last week.
From the words of Kit Hood, Director of Degrassi "Most stuff was 'give aways' and promotional items. There may have been a brief
distribution deal for 'classroom stuff' ie rulers, calculators, book bags
etc. with "The Hudson Bay Company, many years ago, I'm not certain -- but whatever, it was
probably short lived and any stuff left must be very old and dusty now."

Hey all,
Just wanted you to know that I was on the Internet Movie Database
(us.imdb.com), and saw that Stacie Mistysyn will be in a new movie
premiering sometime this year. The name of it is "Jersey Guy," and
it's by a first time director. Probably indie, probably won't get much
coverage ... and probably will pop up in a video store when I see it.
The status reads "post-production," and that was of March 24.

Hi Mark,
I saw the actress who played Melanie on Degrassi. She looks EXACTLY the same... just a little older. She has shorter hair,
kind of 'friends-like'. She was wearing mostly black.
It was May 8th (saturday), in the evening (like between 8 and 10 pm)
Emily Carr Institute is an Art Schoolin Vancouver BC. It's departments
include: Design, Animation, Film, Photography and Visual Arts. They grant
degrees or diplomas.
I was celebrity spotting. But she was the only celebrity that i saw.
Usually Douglas Coupland attends, and Atom Egoyan received an hourary
doctorate at the graduation ceremony.
Hope this helps!
Heidi

It is good that Degrassi was made in Toronto instead of Hollywood. American series are all the same. Especially those lame WB and TGIF shows with perfect looking kids who don't face real frustrations. The conflicts are always petty and predictable. Too much energy is placed on sexiness, cool image. It's like the writers never talked to real teemagers. In the wrong hands, Degrassi would have been another horrid show like Step By Step or USA High.
*Mark* Actually Degrassi was co-produced by an American company, WGBH Boston/Taylor Productions, that ran on the PBS Network. There are some realistic adolescent dramas like The Wonder Years, Party of Five, My So-Called Life, and some others..

I was just wondering about a scene from School's Out, where Lucy shows
Caitlin how to put on a condom. How many guys flinched when Lucy flicked the
teat of the condom back onto the banana, and how many guys have been injured
from having their girlfriends watch this lesson?
Also, Andrew Sutcliffe mentioned how Joey was pricing condoms in the
pharmacy. Did you notice how slow he was? If he were a real worker he
would've been sacked.

[Best buds Bethany, Chloe, and Sabrina are looking through their parent's
Degrassi Junior High yearbooks. They are laughing at the vintage photo
collages and having a hard time believing that their folks were ever THAT
young. ]
CHLOE: It's so weird seeing my mom listed by her maiden name "Melanie
Brodie". I am so used to hearing "Melanie Simpson". The caption under
her photo reads "Most likely to be a phone sex therapist like Dr. Sally."
Mom also had braces just like me, so that is why I am cursed! At least I
got lucky with my dad's tall genetics so I have a decent chance at being a
model.
SABRINA: Well my mom was "Caitlin Ryan" before she was "Caitlin Jeremiah".
The caption reads "Most likely to start a feminist revolution". My dad
and your dad were both in this geeky band called "The Zit Remedy". For
some reason everybody is always eating Skippy Peanut Butter, Granola Dipps,
and Crunch Delight Bars.
BETHANY: My mom's maiden name was "Michelle Assef" before she was
"Michelle Thomas". For some reason they called her "Mouse" and she is
always wearing baby pink shirts. I guess that was in style during the
1980s. Some of the clothes are cool but others are tacky looking. This
girl named Stephanie Kaye wore the grossest make-up and teased hair. The
twin sisters went overboard with all those wild stripes, polka dots, and
zebra stripes. And what's with all those crazy scarves and legwarmers? But
I guess that our future kids will say the same thing about our crazy
fashions.
SABRINA: There is this page where they name all the hot movies, television
shows, and music of the time. Some of the stuff is still popular today.
It's just weird that some of my favorite singers: Madonna, Whitney Houston,
Cher, and Janet Jackson actually had hits waaaaaay back then. Some of the
actors are still popular too. Like before Alyssa Milano and Shannen Doherty
were on "Charmed" they were on "Who's the Boss" and "Beverly Hills 90210".
I guess that 90210 was kinda like a prototype version of "Dawson's Creek"
because they are pretty much the same. Who's cuter Jason Priestly or James
Van Der Beek?
BETHANY: Jason because he is Canadian. But I'd trade both of them in to go
out with one of the Back Street Boys.
CHLOE: Hey look! Our friend Emma Nelson is actually in this yearbook! She
is the baby held by the punk rocker girl in the Peace on Earth Christmas
photograph. You know, the one where Sabrina's dad is wearing a Santa Clause
hat. So THAT explains why Emma's mom lets her get away with all those body
peircings and rainbow hair dyes.
