There is a pop rock band from Sweden called "Degrassi High Rocks". The band members are named Henrick Martin Stefan and Robert. It is obviously a struggling garage band but the website is pretty cool, even if it is written in Swedish http://hem1.passagen.se/kikshaw/

I was watching some old tapes recently, and I was wondering if anyone

else noticed this...I believe it was the episode of Degrassi High when

Snake wanted to ask Michelle for a date. When Snake told his friends

that Michelle said yes, Joey responded with, "All right STEFAN!"

I thought that was kinda funny. Does anyone else remember that?

Another question: did the members of The Zit Remedy play their own

instruments?

Thanx, Amy

*Mark* No, they only learned the notes for the song. I do not remember Joey saying that...I'll go check.

In response to that comment last Digest by David Fagin about Joey filming the video amongst the garbage and dumpster being to create a "street atmosphere" - I don't buy that argument. The only time I've ever seen on tv someone operating out of a garbage can is that cookie monster on Seasame Street ( or whatever it was - the thing that looked like a rolled up piece of carpet with the big red nose ).

And when you look at what Susin Nielsen ( the writer of the bikini girl episode ) who played the janitor did to Joey in that Christmas episode of Junior High - going around calling him a "goofball" and him getting pelted with peanuts or something when he said "Not bad for a woman" when she fixed the furnace - then I knew our feminist friends were running this show.

I just don't think it makes sense that Joey who wanted to be the great rock star would be filming his first video inside a dustbin - especially with bikini girls. I can accept the argument he may have had them in the background for a street culture song - but his song wasn't of that type. Do we assume the his song "Everybody wants something" what he and the girls "wanted" was to be amongst the garbage ?

Its too incredible to believe. It was a subtle attempt to dump on the whole bikini girl notion. And it was very cleverly executed. The scriptwriters get extra marks for that one even though now they've been sprung.

featured Heather & Erica was the skit about the old lady who has her

gazebo stolen by the two guys that live next to her. "Heather &

Greetings and salutations!

This is in response to Rowena, in DD#62 about the Degrassi reference in

Clerks. I haven't seen Clerks in a few years, but I do not seem to remember

any references to Degrassi in it anyway. However, there are references in

Mallrats. Shannen Doherty's character wears a Degrassi High jacket that her

ex-boyfriend demands back. I also recall a character saying something to the

extent that he was going to "kick back and watch a little Degrassi High" but

I think this may have been in Kevin Smith's 3rd movie, Chasing Amy. When

you're from New Jersey, these movies all seem to blend into one another, if

not into reality...ha ha. Definitely check them out, Rowena...they are worth

it.

So, a Degrassi convention? I would definitely attend that, providing the

date allows for it and I can bribe hubby into taking me!!! I'm attending a

Dark Shadows convention here in the States, and have to go with my parents

since he won't go...I can only imagine bringing this one up! Even if I can't

attend, I am willing to help out in any way I can.

Cassandra Z.

*Mark* Natalie and I will update everybody on the convention with a countdown clock, several web pages...we may have a convention committee that may take place on IRC , or ICQ, or via telephone.

The Degrassi episode on animal rights where Caitlin got confused sent the wrong message I think. Mistreatment of animals for scientific research is wrong especially for things like cosmetics. The show sent the message its justified in the conclusion to that episode.

I have actually seen what they do to guinea pigs, rabbits and other small animals in medical research labs and it is totally criminal. And I don't care whether or not its to save human lives or cure diseases. Most of their experiments are unnecessary because they are done to satisfy legal and insurance requirements. I'd rather see people die than see helpless little animals suffer. LIZ was right on that occassion. The ends never justifies the means.

Ah ha! So, I have a cable box, and I am able to get channels from all

the over the US, like the LA Warner Bros Channel, although I live in

Calgary. Big deal, right? I didn't think so. But the other day I was

watching a show called "Change of Heart". For those of you that may not

know it, the premise of the show is that it is a reality based show,

where a young couple, who are having problems, comes before a host and

his studio audience and complains about each other. They suggest to the

producers of the show the kind of person each one of them would like to

date (usually markedly different from the person they are currently in a

relationship with). Then the show sets each of them up, and they go on

one date with their new 'friend'. Then, each member of the couple talks

about the date with the new person in front of their partner, and at the

end of the show, the original couple has to decide if their date with

the other person convinced them if they should stay together, or if they

had a, surprise surprise, a 'change of heart'. This probably didn't make

much sense, since I am not explaining myself well, but I hope you get

the gist. Anyway, I was watching a couple a days ago, and some couple

was whining about each other, and she asked to be set up with someone

with a good body. Well, the guy with the good body was none other than

DAYO ADE (that's right, BLT from Degrassi)

Apparently, he lives in LA, and he said he is a personal trainer. I

haven't seen him since School's Out was aired, and he looked like he was

doing well. He looked healthy, and like he was enjoying life out in

La-la land. The only thing that bothered me was how unbelievably cheesy

he was acting. He also said that this was his first date ever, which was

a little hard to swallow. Nonetheless, I was surprised to see that he

was living down there. Good for him, I guess. In the end, the couple

decided to stay together. She enjoyed her date with Dayo (or D as he

says his friends like to call him), but she wanted to give her boyfriend

another chance. That's too bad. The host should have mentioned he was on

Degrassi J.H. and Degrassi High. That would have clinched it for him.

Shaun

Regards these comparisons between 90210 and Degrassi:-

What I don't like about 90210 is their attempt to resurrect the past - with Jason Priestley and others trying to replicate the neo-classical James Dean look and image ( Dean had a hell of lot more stature, brains and substance than these guys on 90210 ). It reminds me of almost a 1990s version of "Happy Days". Everyone looks so perfect and cool its unrealistic - almost like make-believe. And its wrong also from the point of view young people will try to copy that image ( it says to kids this is the best and only lifestyle to adopt ). It is the wrong image to be promoting I think. But that's Hollywood. The rest of us live in the real world and thats why Degrassi is more appealling. I'm sure everyone will agree.

Subject: Dipps Dilemma

Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 11:37:23 PDT

Dear Degrassi Digest,

I just have one quick question. Does anyone know what was going on with

Skippy peanut butter, Dipps chocolate covered granola bars and

Degrassi? I mean, the advertising kind of got out of hand when some of

the characters had Dipps posters hanging in their bedrooms and would

wear Skippy and Dipps t-shirts. Almost every kitchen scene had a box

of Dipps lurking in the background. I thought Degrassi was funded by

Public Television and viewers like me. Why did the producers find it

necessary to pitch Quaker products? --C. Patch

*Mark* Tabi and the skippy peanut butter, the Granola Dipps, and the Clear-Tech pimple cream are ways to promote products while airing the show..It is like putting a commercial in the show...so the advertiser gets double time, a commercial during a commercial break and some commercial coverage during the show...Some say it is subliminal, but we all can see that it is upfront and not subtle. Sometimes PWT (the production company) will get paid to promote the product, or the advertiser will provide craft services, like give 200 pounds of peanut butter, etc...Sometimes CBC will buy episodes of Degrassi for cheaper, because PWT is doing them a favour and promoting the product, so CBC may sell less to advertisers, and pay for episodes for Degrassi but PWT may pay CBC some fee for advertising products on the show. Advertising costs money, so the advertisers pay the network, and the network buys episodes from PWT. Either way, someone will profit and someone may lose out. It seems as though the advertisers will win in the end because they get more air time promoting their products.

Subject: ANOTHER LITTLE MESSAGE

In respect of the now famous Bikini Girl episode of Degrassi High there may be another little message even more subtly hidden there.

I couldn't work out why SNAKE and WHEELS objected to paying ALISON and AMY to be in the video in bikinis - especially as they were so keen on the idea. They bailed up Joey about it when they found out about the $40 Joey had spent. That seems to suggest the scriptwriters ( Susin Nielsen ) were trying to send a message to the guys out there its not ok to solicit ( pay ) girls to be bikini girls by analogizing the fact Snake and Wheels wouldn't sanction it.

I and I'm sure most guys out there would have been more than happy to pay $40 to see Alison and Amy in bikinis. I just can't logically understand why Snake and Wheels objected and my only objective conclusion is that this was another of the shows little messages.

Degrassi World #43: Snake's first part time job

^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^

The day that Snake got his driver's license, he begged his parents to let

him get a part-time job so he could buy a car. After all, a car meant the

ultimate freedom. He would no longer depend on mommy and daddy every time

he wanted a ride to the arcade. Plus his ten-speed bicycle was becoming

less and less cool. The Zit Remedy would have a blast cruising down Queen

Street with "Everybody Wants Something" playing on the stereo. At first

Snake had an elitist attitude about where he would work, only applying at

trendy clothing or record stores. However he soon learned that all the good

jobs had their pick of university students to choose from. Ultimately he

swallowed his pride and applied at a fast-food restaurant called "Wiener

Rodeo".

Wiener Rodeo had the worst uniforms: polyester orange and brown cowboy

suits complete with a plastic cowboy hat and a sheriff star shaped name

badge. When, greeting customers Snake had to say geeky phrases (with a fake

southern drawl) like "Howdy, partners" and "Y'all come back now, ya hear?".

Even the counters were cleaned using cowboy squirt guns and red bandannas.

Snake had the illustrious job of assembling hot dogs and hamburgers. At

least the menu was easy to memorize, nearly everything was made with

barbecue sauce, chili beans, and nacho cheese. Even if you messed up and

switched ingredients, the customers wouldn't notice anyway. The food orders

that came out really lopsided or over-condiment drenched would be shoved

into the "compost pile". It was an unwritten rule that employees could

help themselves to this pile on their breaks. Therefor, if their break was

coming up, they would accidentally-on-purpose burn some of the french fries

or smash a hot dog bun.

Snake did such a good job as a cook that he was selected to be Wiener

Rodeo's mascot "Cowboy Mustard". Which meant wearing a giant hot dog

costume and entertaining little kids. It was a humiliating task but the

position paid an extra three dollars per hour. Some of the little kids were

truly amused by Cowboy Mustard, they treated Snake with the same affection

as Mickey Mouse. However older guys would throw trash at him. Pretty girls

would say "nice buns" or "I like your big wiener".

Joey and Wheels would hang out for hours just to tease Snake. They

threatened to borrow Lucy's camera and take footage of him in costume for

the next Zit Remedy video. The manager of Wiener Rodeo overheard them

talking about the Zit Remedy and asked if the band would like to perform in

a commercial. The boys agreed to do it but they had no idea what the

manager had in mind: to sing the Wiener World jingles wearing character

costumes. To match Snake's hot dog, Joey would be a hamburger and Wheels

would be a box of french fries. The Zit Remedy finally got their

television debut . . . as dancing junk food characters. It was a gig that

they would never forget. How could they? Caitlin and Melanie made videotape

copies for everyone. Simon was jealous because he wasn't cast. Dwayne and

Nick would taunt them about it for years. The End.
