The theme song for Schools Out was Harem Scarem's song LOVE

REACTION - and the lyrics went " ......when I found heaven in

you....". Who do you think they were refering to given they

chose that song for the film ? Was it Joey and Tessa or was

it Joey & Caitlin ? I think it was Tessa.

Subject: summarizing some posts from previous Digests

It's been more than three months since I sent my last post, so I

really think I should say some of the things I've been meaning to say

before the subjects become ancient history!

In my last post I mentioned that Joey talked in a kind of cool-dude

patter for the first two seasons and in the third season suddenly

talked like everyone else, and Mark said that he was not as much a

troublemaker and his character was more developed in the third season.

Now I'd like to add that I think that Joey's character had already

changed in the second season. I see this from a different perspective

than many viewers because I started watching Degrassi regularly in the

second season and later saw the first season when the episodes were

repeated. I was rather shocked by some of Joey's actions in the first

season, when he was locking the 7th graders in the janitor's room,

taunting Melanie for being flat-chested, and selling vitamin pills as

drugs (although that subplot was good comic relief; Joey was often the

comic relief when there was a serious story). In the second season he

still got in trouble at school often, but apart from the episode in

which he wanted to have sex with Liz I don't recall him doing anything

that hurt anyone.

Actually after Joey's character was developed more, I think he was a

much better person in his relationships with his male friends than in

his relationships with girls. In that area perhaps he was too much

influenced by "that rock star thing" which scantily clad women were a

part of, which Cassandra Z. mentioned in DD#59. I thought (at least

after the first season) that Joey was, as Wheels said, "a nice person

on the inside," but he sometimes acted like a sleazy person because he

didn't think it was cool to be a nice person.

I remember a continuity error in Degrassi which no one else has

mentioned: in one scene when Joey was working at the radio station he

was wearing a different shirt at the station and on the sidewalk.

Actually, I've noticed quite a few continuity errors on many other

shows with high budgets; especially on sitcoms where they perform

each episode twice before an audience and combine the best parts of

both performances.

Finally, I saw a travel program on PBS called Rough Guide a few

years ago, and in a segment on Canada I saw a street performer in

Toronto who one of the hosts said was on Degrassi. I didn't recognize

him because his head was shaved; I wonder if anyone else saw that and

would know which Degrassi actor he was.

I thought Rebecca Haines who played Kathleen in the show was the

best actor and the most under-rated member of the cast. It was

probably the hardest part of the show and she did it so

convincingly especially as she originally tried out for the part

of "Melanie".

She really blossomed in DEGRASSI TALKS - I thought she was so

beautiful and had a really sexy voice ( when conducting those

interviews ).

I thought it was sad we didn't see her ( except for an extra

) in SCHOOLS OUT

because she ( as Kathleen ) might have given Caitlin some advice

on how not to string boys along or something given her

experiences with Scott in the show.

*Mark* I thought Rebecca Haines did a good job at portraying Kathleen....It

was too bad that her character was only shown for 2 seconds in School's Out.

One of the many classic snaps of the show I think was the look

I loved it when MELANIE beat Jason Cox and the boys soccer team

in the swimming pool the episode THE GREAT RACE. Those guys were

pathetic and deserved to lose. ( I hope all those feminists out

Snake's performance trying to save Alison in SCHOOLS OUT on the

lake was almost as bad which begs the question can Canadian guys

swim ? If I had seen Alison going under I'd have been out

there in about 10 seconds. ( Living near the beach as I do

gives me a bit of an advantage ).

But it was great to see Melanie save the day.

*Mark* That was also one of my favourite episodes.

I was replaying Schools Out tonight and something caught my sharp

analystical eye - don't you all think its interesting they had

Joey putting out packets of condoms just before both Tessa

approached him for a date and Caitlin tried to make up ? Sort

of a message there about what was to come ( tempting fate )

and about safe sex ? Another one of those hidden messages in

the film. But it didn't do Tessa much good.

And at the end don't you also think it was ironic Snake - who

spent his whole summer waiting to save some damsel in distress

in the pool - that in the end it was Alison - the chick he

could have had at anytime at the snap of his fingers - that he

saved on the lake ? That was a nice touch.

Given that CLAUDE was always on the anglophone track - going to

French films, had the frenchy look about him and sort of a

weakish character - always the odd man out - is it possible

this was some sort of subtle criticism of Quebec by the Ontario

based show ? I say that in the knowledge there has been a lot

of friction in Canada over Quebec in the last 30 years. It

sort of hit me thru the show Clode was meant to be some sort

of representative of the frenchies in Quebec.

I suppose the show may have also tried to portray given the way

Caitlin got her fingers burned with Clode that attaching oneself

to all that goody-goody idealistic save-the-world stuff is a

waste of time too.

I think I spotted Rick as an extra in the very last Jnr High

Schools Out who looked like him.

X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3110.3Hi everyone.

It's my first time posting but I have been following the Digest from issue

1. I am a pedantic Degrassi obsessed Australian maniac, and going through

the Digest have noticed unanswered questions go by. Now I don't know too

much about the actor's lives nowadays, but I think I know the show prettywell.

-Caitlin didn't have to babysit Patrick, it was basically the other way

round. "Don't your parents worry about leaving you alone?" "We're not

really alone. Patrick's there. He's OK, for a brother"

-As well as making Joey wear a bra and undies over his clothes, Dwayne made

him wear pantihose on his head and push a banana up the ramp with his nose.

-About that board behind Tessa and Alex's head...it's titled 'Scholarship

Winners' and mentions names such as Sari Friedland, Mitra Sen, and Lisa

Canard (who was the character in Kids played by Stacie Mistysyn).

-The name of the actor who played Aaron, Erica's 'mono' boyfriend, was

David Stratton.

-I watched 'Clerks', specifically to find the Degrassi reference. What was

it? The closest I could find was that his girlfriend's name was Caitlin.

-I looked through the entire Junior and High episodes (don't have Kids)

looking for Neve Campbell and I didn't see her. Christian, her brother,

played Todd in the Final Season of High, he was Dale's friend in Body

Politics, and of course he was Tessa's boyfriend at the start of School's Out.

-The girl who played Young Liz was Brooke Madigan.

-The Zits previous ideas for names were: Snake and the Charmers (myfavourite)

Snake and the Sneeze, Snake and the Snaps, Joey and the Joy Buzzers, Joey

and the Jumpstarts, Joey and the Jellybeans, and Joey and the Jetset.

I have some comments to make about how Degrassi always had girls getting

pregnant. This is the typical message, that the second you have

unprotected sex, you will fall pregnant. Tessa and Joey even used condoms!

The reality is that it takes, on average, six months to fall pregnant.

I'm not saying it can't happen the first time, because it can. But in

reality it is unlikely.

In a normal teenage sexual relationship what happens is this:

The guy doesn't want to use a condom, the girl wants to keep the guy. They

have unprotected sex, and the girl frets until her period comes. It does

come, so she becomes complacent and thinks she probably can't have kids at

all. Then about 6 months into the relationship she does fall pregnant, and

there you go.

This is obviously simplistic, and it doesn't always happen that way, but it

is a common enough scenario.

I also have a few comments about the story Tessa Keeps Her Baby. Before I

start, can I say, yes I know it's fiction, it's not mine to pay out, etc etc.

But please! It almost encourages young girls to have children. I know Mrs.

Earl likes her stories to be realistic, so how does this sound?

-Tessa bumps into Joey in the pharmacy. He hardly recognizes her because

her face is all swollen from retained fluid. She is grumpy and doesn't

talk to him.

-Tessa's labour takes 36 hours. Christian, the newborn, looks awful, his

head is moulded into a point and he's covered in blood. At three months

old he turns into that beautiful baby.

-She thought it would be like playing with a Cabbage Patch Kid, but it is

more like a Chuckie doll. Christian vomits, poos, wees, costs a heap of

money, cries all evening, and wakes at 1am, 3am and 5am. Tessa has no life

because Christian wants to breastfeed every two hours.

Sound like a nightmare? That's exactly what happened to me. My daughter

Samantha is 3 months old now and is settling down. Thank Goodness.

I would never recommend pregnancy and childbirth to anyone without a solid

support system and a loving and compatible partner. Bringing a child into

the world is an awesome responsibility and never a decision to be takenlightly.

Sorry if I pissed you off Natalie. I really do enjoy your Fan Fiction.

I like both Dawson's Creek and Degrassi High. Hands down Degrassi is the

better show. It covers more real world issues and takes a gutsier approach.

However, Dawson's Creek is appropriately updated. In my opinion the Degrassi

gang came off as too innocent. The Creekers have that jaded, apathetic "been

there, done that" attitude typical of this generation. Dawson's Creek places

a large emphasis on sex and popularity instead of important issues but you

have to admit that high school is nothing but a popularity contest.

You asked me before why did Caitlin called Alex "Yankou", then later called

glasses, but anyway.)

This message was in an episode before Smokescreen, which is where I think

Caitlin calls him Yankou. (I haven't actually checked this. It may be

another episode.)

So I guess that it's just that he was called by his last name, as is

sometimes the case. It seems out of character for Caitlin to address a

Since someone asked who wrote the Degrassi theme song, I've started

to wonder, who wrote Everybody Wants Something?

Regarding Andrew Sutcliffe's comment that Joey wouldn't shoot his

video amongst the garbage and the dumpsters, perhaps he would do that

to give it a "street atmosphere." We are talking about a band named

after a skin eruption; actually I liked the name Zit Remedy better. I

don't remember Joey complaining about shooting amongst the dumpsters.

I don't want to get embroiled in the controversy about Andrew

Sutcliffe's posts, but I do think he had a good point about Lucy and

L.D. being inconsistent filming Wheels' butt. People are often

inconsistent in their thinking when they have a pet cause related to a

particular group of people, and they don't notice when they fail to

apply the same principles to all people. Before saying anything about

much of what he's said I'd have to reread his posts. I do disagree

with his view about Michelle's father; I know that there are many

successful relationships between men and women of different races, in

fact I've read recently that interracial marriages have become

increasingly common in the past few years. Often it is racial

prejudice in society and the willingness of people like Michelle's

father to accept it that makes them unsuccessful.

I wonder if the confused online grocery shopper was performing a

search for "grocery stores" using a search engine like Alta Vista,

because some of them would list every site which has the words

"grocery" and "store in it.

Degrassi World #42--The Daddy Daughter Dance, written by Natalie Earl

^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^

Each Spring Degrassi Junior High holds a special Daddy-Daughter Dance. Emma

is torn between taking her biological father Shane and her mother's "common

law" partner Clutch. Christine (Spike) and Clutch have been living together

for three years, and Emma treats Clutch with the same respect as a

step-dad. Last year she took Clutch to the dance and had a great time.

However, lately she has spend a lot of quality time with her biological

father Shane. After a heart-to-heart talk with her mother, it was decided

that Emma deserved the chance to nurture relationships with both Shane and

Clutch. Therefor this year she would attend the dance with Shane.

Christine warned Emma that her school friends may act prejudice around

Shane due to his developmental disabilities. Although he has made great

progress since his injuries as a teenager, Shane still speaks and acts

noticeably "slow". Christine hated for Emma to be tormented by the other

kids. They already tease Emma about her punk rock image and for hanging

around offbeat "freaks" likes Amethyst. However, Christine knew that Emma

was more mature and intelligent than the other kids and would not let their

ignorant comments degrade her self esteem.

Unfortunately there were some students who treated the Daddy Daughter dance

as an elitist affair. Especially, Mandy and Candy the snobs who lived near

The Beaches Country Club. Each year the girls bragged about their father's

wealth and social status. They took pleasure in ridiculing the girls who

happened to be poor, unattractive, or disadvantaged. Theses girls were

super popular. Nobody really liked them, everybody was just afraid of their

power. Emma knew that Mandy and Candy would have a field day picking on

Shane. Last year they called her an illegitimate bastard baby and said that

Christine and Clutch were living in sin. Instead of retaliating, Emma held

her dignity and ignored them. However, this year the girls took their

teasing too far.

Emma and Shane entered the dance with high hopes. Emma's true friends were

cool about hanging out with Shane. They dined, danced, and had a great time

until Mandy and Candy made their entrance. They asked Emma if she got her

vintage dress off a Salvation Army thrift shop mannequin. Emma was

embarrassed to tell them the truth: that the dress indeed came from a

mannequin at her mother's consignment shop. Both girls asked Shane rude and

embarrassing questions. They flirted with him and complimented him in an

obviously phony way. However, when they called him a "retard" Emma could no

longer stand it. She started beat the crap out of both girls. She knew how

to fight mean and dirty (Christine and Clutch made sure of it). Emma was

supposed to be expelled from school but she got off with a weeks detention.

When Mandy and Candy's fathers found out that their daughters had provoked

the fight, they figured that the girls "asked for it" and got what they

deserved. The End.

Degrassi World #43--A Poem About Stephanie Kaye, written by Rowena Foster

^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^Kiss me Steph

"All the way with Stephanie Kaye!" Is what she got the kids to say

She wanted to be school presidentDon't know if she knew what it really meant.

The school president is supposed to be wise

Cool, fair, just, not a hit with the guysStephanie Kaye didn't realise this

And boldly declared, "One vote, one kiss"They all had a turn, and Stephanie won

She became school president but it wasn't fun

She had to make speeches for the PTA

She had all these meetings, and work every day.

Steph then thanked Joey and Voula was mad

She couldn't believe she was treated so bad.

She'd made all those signs and helped her to win

But Steph turned her back and thanked Joey, thanked him!

She ignored her brother, that's Arthur, you know

Only a grade seven! That's not cool to show

"Don't talk to me, Arthur! Please go away! You're not my brother until Saturday!"

She used to get changed every day before school

In tight skimpy clothes, and she looked like a fool.

And lipstick, and blusher, eyeliner, hairspray

All tarted up to start each new day.The Big Dance

Wheels thought she was cute, and Joey did too

Wheels got to her first, which made Joey blue

They went to a dance, but Steph was real drunk

Wheels put on aftershave that totally stunk

Steph had been late, and Joey was glad

"She stood you up, man! Oh Wheels, don't be sad."

When she turned up she looked quite a sight

And then she threw up to cap off the big night.

Luce made Voula speak for her, boy was Steph glad

But Voula got caught by her old fashioned Dad.

Steph didn't care, she was too sick to know

All she wanted was home and a cup of cocoa. The Experiment

She loaned Arthur papers on threat of blackmail

So Yick Yu could cheat, so he wouldn't fail

She didn't want Joey to sell any pills

Not knowing that vitamins gave them their thrillsThe Cover Up

She faced a dilemma on photo day

Should she dress like a tramp and put that on display?

What would her Mum do; how much would she see?

She finally decided, "I've got to be me."The Great Race

The girls raced the boys in the pool, the girls won

Steph started them off with her starter's gun

She got all wet, and was less than impressed

She swimmers had splashed her, and she was all dressed!

She had a bikini she wanted to wear

She chickened out when she saw all the crowd there.

She wanted to speak, but LD said, "No,

There's no time for speeches, just ready, set, go!"Best Laid Plans

Steph asked Wheels for a second date

Wheels agreed quickly, and Steph thought, "Great!

I can't lose him this time, it cannot go wrong

So if he wants sex then I'll just go along."

Her friends all said, "Stephanie, are you for real?"

Steph just declared, "sex is no big deal.

I won't mess up twice. I just want to get him.

So yeah, if he asks, then maybe I'll let him."

Shane heard, and his eyes popped out his head

He went to tell Wheels about what Steph had said.

Wheels was surprised, and Joey upset

But Joey told Wheels about what he should get

"You gotta buy condoms! Don't be a jerk!"

So they went to the drugstore where Steph's Mum did work.

She sold him the condoms, gave him leaflets to read

She really thought Wheels was just too young to breed.

At dinner that night she gave some to Steph too

"You must learn to say no if it happens to you."

Steph was alarmed, but held her gaze steady

She wished that her mother would go and get ready.

Her Mum couldn't see Wheels! She had her own date

And then she discovered he'd be turning up late.

Steph was upset but hoped for the best

She went up to her room and started getting dressed.

Her Mum couldn't see her all dressed up for Wheels!

She'd get a huge lecture, she knows how it feels.

When Wheels arrived Arthur answered the door

Too late! Her Mum cried, "You're that boy from the store!

What are you doing here? Steph, get down here right now!

I want to know the truth, and I want to know now!"

And of course Steph was dressed up as sexy as hell

She knew she was in for it, oh, she knew well.

They both got in trouble and Wheels was sent home

Stephanie cried and felt very aloneBut secretly glad that they didn't make out

She just wasn't ready. She had no doubt.
