Subject: FINAL SAY ON DEGRASSI FEMINISM

In response to my and Mark's comments on the bikini girls video my point was I thought those characters, Caitlin and Lucy, were unreasonable in their attitude. As Mark said it is often a matter of personal perception but perhaps the real aim of the script-writers was to demonstrate that very point and maybe show how unreasonable ( and amusing - because I sort of laughed at first when Lucy refused to do the video ) that sort of extremist feminist view is, and also show that the boys' attitude may have been unreasonable as well.

Girls are perfectly entitled to have their feminist equal rights views but not force their views onto others - and have you thought of this point - Lucy stopped Alison and Amy from making $20 each which they wanted to go to the "rock concert of the century". She forced her views on others and wrecked Joey's video - after all it was Joey's video - not Lucy's - she was only camera provider. Who is Lucy to decide what's in Joey's video ? And other point is when Joey asked her if they could use the camera Lucy didn't give any conditions or qualifications - so Joey assumed it was ok to get the girls organized. And Alison and Amy probably missed the concert.

I said the character Caitlin was a bitch because of the tone and way she called Joey a "shovanist pig" when it really was uncalled for - its not as if he was asking her to strip off completely. She should have just said no nicely instead of being nasty to Joey.

I am surprised to hear Mark say CBC did not put the bit with Melanie looking at a male pinup calendar in THE ALL NIGHTER - I thought Canadian media rules were liberal. Perhaps you'd like a screen capture picture of that scene to go in the picture gallery ? It was obviously not politically correct for CBC to include it - perhaps they didn't want to upset the feminists by screening female sexism ? Isn't that typical - political correctness again. As I like Melanie and my mom's like her I won't say anything bad about her - and I have no objections to her looking at that calendar. I wonder what other scenes of the show were deleted ?

I also recall Erica made a sexist comment about Clutch's body in the show somewhere. Said he had "a great body" - the exact same words Joey said to Caitlin when asking about being in the video. Why is it ok for Erica to say that a Joey not ?

In response to ZOE JACKSON's Post critique of my analysis of the bikini girls incident last Digest - you are missing the point Zoe. Lucy was forcing her perceptions onto Joey and Alison & Amy - see above. And the notion that all guys see bikini girls just as meat is not correct - intelligent people ( and I did 2 university courses Zoe ) look at the whole package - how beautiful they are - aura, personality expressed on their faces etc ... not just their physical stats. ( And for your information Zoe the girls in the show I were sweet on were first Kathleen then Melanie because of those very attributes - not quite your pinup girls are they ? ). I make no apologies for saying what I've said. You do not really know what Joey had in is mind or why he wanted the bikini girls in the video - all I think he wanted was some attractive models to brighten up the video - and he did ask his own girlfriend ( Caitlin) first - Alison and Amy were second choices. What's wrong with that ? I agree Joey was out of line with trying to nail Liz in one of the Jnr High ephisodes but he was younger then.

I am also annoyed that Zoe has tried to twist and distort what I've said and what my views on feminism are. This is typical. Apart from being a bit confused about the issues the logic of the arguments she advances doesn't gel. Bearing in mind the Digest is a Degrassi discussion forum this whole topic is relevant. Zoe's post effectively trys to say my views are wrong and should be suppressed - what about the notion of equal rights she talked about including the right of freedom of thought and speech ? ( that's in a document called the UN Declaration on Human Rights 1948 ). I never said feminists were "men haters" or females were intellectually inferior, or "bimbos", or "inanimate meat". I am all for equal rights provided those rights are not used to infringe others rights. Normal feminism is ok but extremist or radical feminism is dangerous. I just happen to think it would have been fun to see the video the way Joey wanted it.

The "natural order" I was talking about is the fact that the role of females in most instances be it humans or animals is that of existing for the attachment to and admiration of males and vice-versa. The end result is sex and reproduction but that is our biological function whether feminists like it or not. Zoe unfortunately doesn't seem to want to accept that as fact. I said it was unhealthy because it tries to suppress male appreciation of females, and unproductive because of the arguments, friction and hostility that were created - all of which was trivial and unnecessary given the harmlessness of Joey's project.

The fact is the events were about a modelling job and a modelling contract that Alison & Amy accepted without being "subjugated", "abused" or "exploited". As Mark said there was no gun to their head. A legal contract Zoe. I don't know whether under Canadian contract law either Joey or Alison & Amy would have had a right of action for damages against Lucy.

I also found it curious that there is no mention in Zoe's post of Melanie's conduct - which for those of you who don't know involved a 5 second shot of her looking at a toy-boys pinup swimsuit calendar ( boys in bikinis Zoe ) and she said ( a bit embarrassed I might add ) quote: "We could really use some guys like these at Degrassi". What were you saying about sexism Zoe ? I'd like to hear Zoe's comment on that. Subjective feminism. Zoe sort of reminds me of the attitude displayed by that baywatch girl in the movie UNDER SEIGE when Steven Segal the gets her to carry some weapons and he said he supports feminism don't you ? and she says "Only when it works in my favor".

In conclusion I think its been acknowledged the feminists did hijack at least a couple of ephisodes of the show and I personnally thought it was silly to be disseminating those sort of adult ideas on a young persons program because sex and sexism is everywhere - on TV, in advertising etc.. and to deny it is unrealistic, however, given the nature of the show was to display contemporary social issues relevant to teenagers so perhaps it was understandable that issue was thrown in.

Subject: DID ALISON REPLACE STEPHANIE KAYE IN THE SHOW ?

I think there's a lot of evidence Alison was brought in to replace Stephanie Kaye. Firstly Alison only appeared after Steph left. Secondly she started the same tricks as Steph - boy chasing - Steph was after Wheels and Alison after Snake in the a similar manner. Thirdly she became the "object of desire" in the show if you can call it that, just as Steph was. Of course Alison wasn't as glamorous or nice as Stephanie. Steph had a lot of class don't you think. It may not have been intended she play the exact same role as Steph but she did some similar things.

In response to your question Mark to my description of Alison as the "sex princess" of Degrassi last Digest I was refering to the fact she was viewed by all the guys - Wheels Joey Snake and others as the most desirable chick at the school - just as Steph was at Jnr High - remember the saying Shane started "All the way with Stephanie Kaye".

P,S.

With respect of my comment in the last Digest asking whether AMY was a sexy etc... as Alison - the reason for that was because there was a perception portrayed in the show that Alison was the #1 girl but I don't necessarily agree with that. I wanted to know what everybody else thinks. AMY had a lot of charm and personality I thought.

Subject: DEGRASSI RACISM ?

I liked Michelle's dad in Degrassi. The one who didn't like her going out with BLT. He was not a racist but a pragmatist. Despite the fact he was a bit hot-headed and blood-pressure prone he is a good role model for a father. Total opposite of Caitlin's dad who had that extra-martial affair whereas he threw out Michelle's mom because she did the same thing. And look at the way he helped her after she split - gave her the $500 for the ring she pawned, made sure she didn't skip school. A good role model and a cool guy. I'd have a beer with him anyday ( if I drank alcohol ).

In the end he was right - that inter-racial dating is impractical and fails - because BLT dumped Michelle for a black girl named Cindy. And I suspect there may have been some subtle subconscious racism in BLT for doing that. Not that I have anything against BLT who was a nice fellow.

What does everybody else think ?

Subject: WHAT WAS ACTUALLY SAID IN THE BIKINI GIRL EPHISODE

I played the bikini girl ephisode again and what was actually said was this:-

Joey said to Caitlin "... you wore a bikini all summer..." ( in a public place at the beach I assume ) therefore he couldn't understand why she wouldn't wear one in his music video. And that's a fair point.

When Lucy refused to shoot it LD said to Alison and Amy "Talk about degrading" to which Alison said "There's nothing degrading about making $20 each" and "It's just a business transaction" then she started arguing with Lucy.

LD was hypocritical because only moments before that when looking at Lucy's camera in the corridor she focused it on Wheel's tight jeans saying "Wheels is looking kind of cute this year". Focused on Wheels behind. We all know what she was refering to. Then they were both giggling about it

SUMMARY: I never really looked at that ephisode closely before but when you really analize it the scriptwriters did a brillant job of presenting both sides of the issue and balancing them in a very clever way.

Two further points in reference to Zoe's comments - its all very well talking about "equal rights" but what about Alison and Amy's right to make a buck and do what they want ? & Why is it ok for Lucy to shoot that sexist video "IT CREEPS" ( where you have the boys stereotyped - Joey the nerd, Simon the football meat, Snake the faggot and Wheels the jerk ) when it isn't ok for Joey to shoot his stereotyped video ? As I said - typical radical feminist double standards

Subject: Gay Pride on Degrassi

I truly appreciate Degrassi for discussing homosexuality on "Rumour

Has It", the episode where Caitlin has that sexual dream about Ms.

Avery and "He Aint Heavy", where Snake's brother Glen comes out of

the closet. I also liked Degrassi Talks where Kim Mistysyn (Stacie's

sister) admits to being a lesbian.

Back in the 1980s, the gay and lesbian community was not the cool

*cause* to support. People were still backwards. Degrassi had guts for

even touching the topic. Every high school has gay and lesbian

students but they stay quiet out of fear. As a teenager, I enjoyed

relationships with both girls and boys. Degrassi was the only

mainstream show that acknowledged homosexuality as being healthy and

normal.

A lot of people think that being gay is a disease or disorder, somehow

connected to abuse. In some cases that might be the reason but not for

me. I was never molested or anything. I had conservative parents and

I hung around with the jocks. My gay lifestyle was a personal decision

unrelated to the influnces around me.. I just found both sexes equally

attractive.

Hey broomheads!

Just for fun I would like to take an opinion poll among Degrassi fans. It is

a two part question.

Part 1 - If you could choose three shows that were equal to Degrassi in

merit, which ones would you choose?

(My vote is for Northwood, Kerrisdale, and Heartbreak High)

Part 2 - Now choose the three shows that are the opposite of Degrassi,

having little merit.

(My vote is for Dawson's Creek, Saved By the Bell, and Beverly Hills

90210.)

Hi! I'm surprised no one has ever mentioned the canadian series Madison

before when comparing Degrassi to different canadian shows. Madison is

no longer on tv except in reruns shown on Showcase Mon-Fri @ 7:30pm

(check your tv guide to see when it is on where you live). Anyway my

point being..Madison was a tv show based on kids who went to a high

school called Madison. It was very different than Degrassi as it didn't

always show the school, it showed what was going on in each of the

characters lives..where they lived, there jobs, there hangouts. I really

liked the show. Since Madison was cancelled I've seen different cast

members go on to make movies as well as guest star in different tv

shows. Anyway..I saw the movie with Caitlan in it, she looks so

different compared to how she looked way back in the Degrassi days. For

those of you who didn't see that movie..Caitlan cut her hair extremely

short and dyed it white blonde. She didn't have a major part in the

movie..she just played an ex-girlfriend of a guy (the guy was played by

a really hot ex-Madison cast member) who gets murdered by his current

girlfriend. She was just shown talking to him a few times and then

bawling over him when he gets murdered. By the way did anyone see

Patrick in the kids show (I can't remember the exact name) that has the

word Knight in the title??

We were watching Bram Stoker's Shadowbuilder last night (it just came out in

Australia on video) and my wife thought she recognised the vet's helping

hand in the movie. I wasn't so sure, but having checked the credits it was

none other than Nicole Stoffman, aka Stephanie Kaye. Not much of a role, a

minute or two on screen at the most before she meets her maker !

I guess the die hard Degrassi fans will already know this, but I just

thought I'd mention it.

The episode mightve had something to do with baseketball? Like he was a

about aids with the students.

I think some guys may have tried to kick his ass or something.

again, this is just from my mind, and a very weak memory.

Degrassi World # 37: Joey's adventures at the Gulp and Guzzle, by Natalie Earl

^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^

To support himself through Degrassi University Joey Jeremiah gets a job at

Gulp and Guzzle, a gas station/quickie mart. As the new hire, he got the

dreaded graveyard shift. Stuck with an unglamorous job, he decides to slack

off as much as possible. "Minimum effort for minimum wage" is his motto.

Midnight: Sign in. The jerk who worked the evening shift left the place a

mess. The hot dog and nacho bar is sticky with condiment drippings. The

floor hasn't been mopped for hours. Don't even ask how the washrooms smell.

Snake drops by to hang out and capitalize on the free slushees. Concoction

of the day: cherry, grape and lime.

1:00 am Stuck in a lucite cubicle. Due to robberies the cashiers now work

in an encased bullet proof barricade. Customers slip money through this

little hole. He feels like that boy who lived in a bubble due to that rare

disease.

2:00 am Time to stock merchandise. Opens cardboard boxes of snack food and

tacky impulse novelties (rabbits foot keychains, neon glow yo-yos). Nukes a

frozen burrito in the microwave.

3:00 am Caitlin stops by for a surprise visit. She looks good. Real good.

Joey locks the door, turns down the lights, and posts the "be back in 15

minute sign". He and Caitlin make good use of the Trojan condom display.

Angry customers, desperate for their daily cigarette and lottery ticket

fix, bang on the door. Back to work.

4:00 am The later it gets the more colorful the customers. Transients,

hookers, persons with sleeping disorders, persons with questionable mental

health.

5:00 am Joey checks out the magazine rack. He already read the usual

staples: GQ, Esquire, Car and Driver, Spin, Billboard, Mad Magazine. Oooh a

new issue of Archie and Jughead.

6:00 am One hour before sign off. Time to clean the place up, balance the

cash register, and make it look like he has been working hard all night.

It's not long before Joey catches a few hours of sleep then it's off to his

radio broadcasting class. Who knows, maybe some day he will be a disc

jockey at C-RAZ radio.
