I'd like to thank you all, the "One to Advertise her site the most!" award is
truly great! but, I digress, I must give this award to the true owner, the one who
advertised his site the most through the digest- this award goes to- the one and only-
Mark Polger!!!
: )
Anyways, I have a few comments..
I was happy to get from my sister, two 'Kids of Degrassi' books for Xmas- she found them
in a second hand store, for only 75 cents each!! I still haven't read them, but they look
good! With pics of "wheels" and "Caitlin" on the cover. Hee Hee.
And- a friend of mine who works on Yonge and Eglington in Toronto- he was dismayed to find
that he couldn't park his car in it's usual spot cuz they were fliming a "Degrassi
movie" I went balistic when he told me this... trying to get all the information
possible outta my bud. He said that Maya was going to be a Degrassi JH teacher.. and it
was like the "reunion" (y'know, the one we've all been hoping for!?) So.. maybe
he's sucking me into a nasty joke.. but anyways.. could this be true!? I hope it is.. he's
a Degrassi fan himself.
I was estatic to meet 'Maya' a few weeks ago. She works for Much Music and CHUM city in
Toronto. I was going to meet Bill (the VJ) and there she was at the reception! Not in a
wheel chair. Of course, I talked to her, she was supernice.. but then, I realized later, I
did't ask her the one thing I really wanted to know- what was the 'pot' in that one scene
in DH?! I'll go back this week and meet her again, I 'spose.
Anyways, have a happy new year, Degrassi Fans!

Mark,
I refer to your reply in the last Digest about my comments on Lucy and Caitlin's extremist
feminist stance about bikini girls in videos. The statement the show aims to depict sexism
- if Alison and Amy in bikinis are sexist then why isn't:- the mere showing Lucy and
Caitlin in bikinis in SCHOOLS OUT discussing sex; or Sara Ballingall ( Melanie )showing
her lovely face in a tv beer commercial ( as reported in Degrassi Update ) sexist too ? I
think all this sexism thing has got totally out of hand and is used by these extremist
feminists to make guys feel guilty about seeing girls as sexually attractive - and that is
what I object to. Interfering with the natural order. And I'm sad that the show was used
by such people to distort the truth. I disagree with the view that wearing bikinis in a
music video is the same as prostitution. If that's the case so is every modelling activity
- every time Claudia Schiffer gets on the catwalk she's prostituting is she ? Fair go !
Then there was the time in THE ALL NIGHTER in DEGRASSI HIGH when Melanie was looking at
that toy-boys pinup calender they got for Diana's surprise birthday party - surely under
those rules that's a sexist thing too. Can anyone ever dream to say beautiful little
Melanie is a sexist ? And if Kathleen and Maya looked at it too ? Where does this all end.
IT CREEPS was a sexist project - and while amusing - its aim was to turn the tables on the
guys for sexist purposes. Intent is critical in assessing this Mark. Hasn't Lucy ever seen
the film THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE ? I'd like everybody's input on this topic. I
think everyone would agree with your view this topic is subjective but my point still
stands -- extremist feminism and double standards almost ruin Degrassi. Andrew P.S. Alison
and Amy may have been a bit snobbish but weren't dumb.
*Mark* Here is my opinion. I think that Amy and Allison did not have guns to their
heads..They did not perceive their bodies as being exploited...They chose to be in the
video in their bikinis for money.
Caitlin perceived Joey's comment as being sexist...therefore we can see that every person
sees things in their own way...
About the concept of displaying our bodies for money, like prostitution, I agree, it
happens everyday....
Both men and women runway models are icons for the mass culture, but are poor examples of
the "real" man or woman. In the world of modelling, men and women's bodies are
changed, corsetted, shaved, waxed, and worked out. Many models are anorexic and bulimic
and many men work out to great lengths to have a small waist, flat stomach, and large
pectoral muscles. Many will tan their bodies, just to sell an image, that is false, by
objectifying themselves into body parts...
It simply sickens me.
It gives false impressions of the real man and woman, (that men are hairless, and
naturally muscular) (women have pre-pubescent bodies) I would have to say that modelling
is like prostituion, in my opinion...and we buy into it indirectly. It makes me very ill
just to see what people are striving to look like, "the starving woman, who is 6
feet, and who is 100 pounds.
Sorry to go on and on and on.....I will stop.
As for I only saw the CBC (domestic version) of Degrassi. I did not see Melanie checking
out the calendar that she gave to Diana.

I recently caught the end of a cheesy movie and was suprised to see the actress who played
Lucy in it. Just wondering if anyone can tell me the name of the movie. She was playing a
member of a jury.
In reply to Andrew from the last digest there were other Canadian programs shown in
Australia. 'You can't do that on Television' and the' Anne of Green Gables' series were
also shown over the years. 'Ready or not' has also been screened in the last few years.

I should correct my comment in the last digest that Degrassi is the only cultural rep of
Canada on Australian tv. I forgot about Northwood, however it was only screened once and
it really more reflects western Canada which is different to Ontario and eastern Canada.
Whereas Degrassi has been screened several times. Northwood is more a soapie anyway.
Degrassi is still the dominant rep..

Don't you think given ALISON was suppose to be the sex princess of Degrassi ( that
description is open to debate as well ) it was strange she didn't have dates and kept
having to ask Nick to dances and fight off Tabi ? Given that she was brought in to replace
the fabulous Stephanie Kaye you would have thought there would have been some follow-thru
on the character role. Don't you also think that AMY was a very under-rated character -
equally as sexy and desirable as Alison ? She almost played the role of Alison's
conscience bringing her into line on several occassions. Wouldn't it have been great if
they both had of been in those wet look bikinis in Joey's music video ? I think it would
have made the show far more acceptable than running that extreme feminist agenda. When
Caitlin refused to be in the video in bikini - and the fact Joey asked nicely - given the
way she replied ( She told Joey he was a shovanist pig ) I thought to myself - what a
bitch ( same with Lucy's response about not filming it ) - and it turned me right off
liking those two for the rest of the show. I'm sure other subscribers to the digest feel
the same way. Of course the fact is Lucy ruined Joey's video over trivial idealism ( then
later there was all that tripe about "script approval" - in other words,
political correctness ) when it could have been dazzling ( as I said, can you imagine what
it would have been like with Alison & Amy in it ? ). Mark, you wouldn't happen to know
if they did film it for private use and didn't put it in the show ? If it does exist
perhaps you could get hold of a couple of pictures from it and put it on the website for
all of the Alison and Amy fans.
Andrew
*Mark* OK...I do not think that Joey ever made the video for home use...
These Degrassi sexism posts have to cool down...please....
I think many fans will be offended...
Andrew, there are many approached to feminism, and you cannot assume that your definition
of feminism is the absolute. Your definition of feminism that "makes men feel guilty
for the suffering that they have caused" is too restrictive. Feminism is simply
"equal rights for men and women". Radical feminism is what you may be referring
to. Degrassi did not seem radical, in my opinion. Lucy and Caitlin did not appear to be
radical. Lucy refused to film her video because it would exploit the bodies of Amy and
Allison. She also wanted to make a feminist film because in most horror films, men were
the dominant ones who killed all the passive female characters...This is a common formula
in slasher films, right?
Caitlin did not want to be used as a model for The Zits video. She thought Joey's comment
was sexist.
In my opinion, I do not think he meant harm, it was just the way he said it...I think he
meant to be genuinely caring and genuine....
Caitlin felt insulted because he was talking about displaying her "beautiful
body" as a showpiece...Caitlin may have been very sensitive, but Joey did not have to
ask Caitlin to strut through his video in her ....Her feelings are not wrong, and neither
were Amy, Allison, or Lucy...Everyone feels differently about their body. I think that
most women or men would not want to be objectifed, but look at some runway models and
magazine icons. I do not think Caitlin or Lucy were "bitches", I think that they
simply do not want their bodies to be objectified by other people.
I do not think he really meant to hurt her, he was just being "Joey Jeremiah",
would you all agree?
I did not think that Allison was supposed to replace Stephanie Kaye...and was she really
the sex princess of Degrassi? ...Please define what a "sex princess" is.

I think that it was wrong that Wheels (Neil Hope) turned out to be the
alcoholic. In the beginning he was against drinking because his parents were
killed by a drunk driver. Then later he becomes this red neck drunk. It
would have been better if Heather or Erica became the alcoholic because they
drank irresponsibly since grade 8. They were the ones who got Stephanie
Kaye drunk.
*Mark* Excellent point, the twins seem somewhat innocent, but we can all remember in the
first season when there characters were not developed, that the twins were a bit easy with
the bottle in grade 8. About Wheels...he had many emotional problems, that may or may not
have lead him to drink. He had a distant relationship with his bio-father, his grandmother
from hell nagging over and over like an alarm clock, his parents death, he was not
interested in school, he carried all his emotional bagage with him, blamed the world for
all his problems, did not take responsibility for his own actions. He was a loser first
and foremost in my opinion. I was shocked to find him in "School's Out" blaming
the kid for not wearing a seatbelt and blaming Lucy for wanting chips. I have little
sympathy for him, What do you all think about him, do you feel bad for him? Feel free to
discuss!

This message relates to Andrew Sutcliffe's message on 'Degrassi
Feminism' in the last digest. I know a lot of people are going to be
responding to that message, but I couldn't resist adding my opinion.
Firstly, Andrew, it is a good thing that you feel comfortable to
express your opinions on this free-speech internet forum. That said, I
have to tell you that as an Australian female, I strongly disagree with
just about everything that you have said. Feminism is not 'nonsense',
'extremist' (well not all) or merely 'a Canadian phenomenon'. Many
people believe all feminists are 'men-haters'and 'butches'. This is an
innocuous, ill-founded, and incorrect judgement. In its pure form,
feminism is a movement, supported by both females AND males around the
globe, which promotes equal rights and opportunities for women. Andrew,
your Heinemann Australian Dictionary will confirm this definition.
Feminism has gained more popularity in the last half of this century,
but was attracting attention and support even in the eighteenth century
when French woman Olympe des Gourges (excuse the spelling) wrote her
'Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Citizen', in response to the
entirely male 'Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen' devised
by the revolutionary assembly. And why has feminism, which Andrew views
in Degrassi as 'unhealthy, unproductive and only creates more division
against the natural order of things' had such support since then? It is
not because people supporting feminism want division. It is, in fact,
the opposite.
Since the beginning of time, woman have been subjugated, abused
and exploited as tools of male power. Certainly, this has not happened
in all societies, and the severity of the ramifications has varied.
However, in all cases, this subjugation has prompted stark societal
division with men given the privileged status of the power holder, the
controller, the dominator. Men, in sum, had freedom. Women were
designated the role of a mere, weak tool to satisfy male desires. We
were there to do housework, produce babies, have sex with and perve at.
Not surprisingly, women in this subservient, controlled role had no
freedom, and certainly no rights. But over the passage of time, science
has, at times reluctantly, informed everyone that women ARE the
intellectual equal of men and have innumerable strengths and autonomous
capacities which had yet to be noticed. It was thus logical that
society's unnatural male-female division, with women being denied of
their own humanity, should be ended, and women should be afforded the
same rights as men.
Before you start contradicting me, I am not disputing that there
are certain fundamental differences between men and women. Certainly,
there is a large biological difference between men and women, and some
researchers and theorists also believe that there are distinct emotional
and psychological differences between men and women. However, these
differences do not entail women having to remain mere sexual objects for
male use and enjoyment. And that, Andrew, was the express reason that
Joey wanted to use bikini women in his 'Zit Remedy' film clip. It was
not flattering to the women involved. They were not being admired for the sum of their
talents, attributes, intellect
and strength which may include beauty, but were ogled at simply as a
piece of inanimate meat, a bit of sexy flesh without a brain attached.
As such a puerile use of women contravenes the advances that have been
made in women's rights, it seems logical that an intelligent person such
as Caitlan would have declined from being a part of Joey's video.
Andrew, it saddens me that there are still males in our beautiful
country of Australia who still live in the past and believe women are
only tools for male enjoyment. Such a view IS divisive and unnatural. I
have two further points for you before I end this extremely long
message. Firstly: NONE of my Australian female friends would 'love to
wear bikinis in a rock video' for the aforementioned reasons, so I hope
no one out their from Canada will believe via Andrew that we are all
unenlightened bimbos. Secondly: you claim that Joey of all people is a
'gentleman and scholar'. Seriously! Yes, Joey was funny, but he never
seemed the epitome of intelligent, and his callous belief that he could
have sex with Liz because of her so-called 'reputation' negates any
alleged 'gentlemanly' like characteristics. I think you should chose
your role models more carefully!
Zoe
*Mark* In my humble opinion...Joey was sexist with respect to Amy and Allison, I do not
think he meant to be with Caitlin...he was exploiting Amy and Allison's in order to gain
an audience for his music video. As for your comments, I agree. I think too many people
think that feminism is equated with radical women who hate men. This is not true. Radical
feminism is extreme...Many women who are radical feminists believe that men are rapists
and walking abortions, and murderers...This seems very disturbing, many go into lesbian
relationships and raise children by themselves. They hate all men for being men, and this
is not fair. In my opinion, any extreme behaviour is not healthy...I think Lucy and
Caitlin can be thought of as Liberal Feminists, anyone agree? I do not know if Australian
Sociology is similar to North American Sociology (probably?), but I think that Liberal
feminists can describe both men and women, who believe in equal rights for both genders. I
do not think that if double standards were presented on Degrassi, it was presented to show
what freedom men have and the oppression and historical inequality that women possess.
(Being objectified with wet-look bikinis, Joey's pin-ip posters in "Censored",
or his music video with Amy and Allison)

Subject: Meetings and Bloopers
Date: Sun, 03 Jan 1999 11:16:13 PST
Hi Everyone,
I hope you and all other Degrassi fans had a great holiday. The Anniversary edition was
really great. Well, I have managed to meet 2 Degrassi characters in the last couple
months. The first I met was Josh Whitehead (Max). He attends the University of Guelph, and
I ran into him at a Guelph pub a few weeks ago. He is in his 4th year at U of G, and he
has a 7 year old daughter. That's all I found out, I didn't talk to him for very long. I
also met Keith White (Tim) this past week. I saw a show he and his old band, Blue Dog
Pict, put on at a small bar in Toronto the night before New Year's. They're both really
nice guys. Keith has a new band now, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name.
Also, I'm in the process of taping every episode of Degrassi from Showcase, and doing so
I've noticed some bloopers in the script writing of a couple of the shows. The first I
noticed was an episode from DJH (I can't remember the title of the episode) when Mr.
Raditch was telling the class that "this assignment is due Thursday afternoon and
3:25 p.m. I will be out of the school at 3:26." Joey then proceeds to disrupt the
class, and Mr. Raditch yells, "Mr. Jeremiah, how many times do I have to tell you my
classroom is for learning, not socializing!...as I was saying, this assignment is due
Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. sharp." That one always cracks me up. The other one I
noticed was in DH, episode entitled "Dream On" where Arthur has a crush on
Caitlin. Throughout the episode, there are segments of Arthur having dreams at night about
Caitlin. At school, in one part, Arthur says to Caitlin, "When are we going to work
on our French assignment? I forgot." Caitlin replies, "This afternoon, on our
spare." Next thing you know, Arthur is asleep, having another dream about Caitlin.
Next segment, they are working on their assignment together on their spare. Did Arthur go
home for a nap before his spare?! Also, for all you Ready or Not fans: A couple of my
friends go to University of Guelph and told me that Amanda (don't know her real name) is
in one of their classes. They've never talked to her, but they are sure it is her. Keep up
the good work on the Digest, Mark!...By the way, I like the name of the Digest. I think
you should keep it!
Tara B.
*Mark* I do not know about the nap, I think they were planning on meeting another
day...like making plans on Tueday to meet Wednesday, and so Arthur may have had the dream
Tuesday night....I do not remember him daydreaming.

(Please note: This episode is the sequel to Showtime Part I and 2. We
are assuming that Claude's suicide attempt was unsuccessful. Claude
misaimed his gun and shot his left shoulder, resulting in admittance to the
emergency room. It is now three days later, Joanne is visiting Claude in
his hospital room.)
Claude: Oh great, little miss perfect is here to cheer up the basket case.
Joanne: Quit being a jerk. Like it or not, I'm here to help. We can either talk as friends
or I can recite boring statistics from my teen suicide pamphlets.
Claude: You don't really care about me. You just like acting as my spokesperson so you can
get credit as a charitable person.
Joanne: If that's truly how you feel I won't waste my time or yours.
Claude: No, wait! I really need to blow off some steam, if you don't mind listening to my
depressing problems.
Joanne: I'm all ears. But before you start, let me say that I can relate to depression.
For years I had a low self esteem because my weight. Perhaps you will think of me
differently after you see my scar (Joanne lifts her sleeve to reveal a scar from the time
she slashed her wrist with a razor blade).
Claude: Oh Joanne, I had no idea. You always came off as being so confident.
Joanne: It took me a long time for me to get to that level. But let's not talk about me.
Tell me what drove you to attempt suicide.
Claude: Where should I begin? My dad calling me a faggot because of my gothic clothes?
Caitlin dumping me? My asthma attacks that keep me from playing sports? My constant
nosebleeds?
Joanne: Why didn't you just ask for help?
Claude: I tried but nobody listened. I thought my morbid poetry would give people the
hint. I let my grades slip and lost weight but nobody noticed . . . except you. Hey,
you're pretty cool for a prep. When I get out of the hospital, lets hang out. I hear that
"Rocky Horror Picture Show" is playing at The Fox.
Joanne: That's not quite my speed, how about something safe like bowling or miniature
golf?
Claude: Sounds fun. Joanne, I have something I want you to wear (He pulls a single
crucifix earring out of his duffel bag, it's the mate to the one he is wearing). It's to
symbolize our new friendship. We sorta have a bond with both of coming close to death.
