Subject: Other realistic teen shows
I am surprised that no one has mentioned another show (also
Canadian) aimed at teens that was a short lived series, called
"Straight Up" - while a LOT different than Degrassi, I
found it to be the most realistic portrayal of teenagers I have
ever seen, and the quality of the series was beautiful. I adore
Degrassi, and do agree that it was(is?) realistic, it is NOT the
only realistic one. Northwood was alright, but it seemed to be
trying too hard. 90210 speaks for itself - rubbish. Never saw
Swan's Crossing. And the other one...Ready or Not, the one with
Busy and Amanda...it's decent, but I wouldn't call it horribly
realistic. "Straight Up" was definately on the edge -
it pushed boundaries, but it blew me away. I wish it was an
ongoing series. It was finally a show that could live up to
Degrassi. If you haven't seen it, the webpage might still be up -
www.straightup.com Sarah Polley was in it - she played an awesome
goth girl :)

On Australian TV, ABC usually put Degrassi on every 3 years or so! Because I watched it in 1992, then 1995 again. They will bring it back eventually heck - they even do the same thing with that stupid show "Press Gang"
And who did Christian Campbell play in the series? He was in Schools Out as Todd (I think). He was also apparently in the series often (he said in an interview) who did he play? was he just an extra or what?
Hi, this recently came to my attention when I visited A.J.'s Degrassi page (a sickass page) Who was the girl on the wheelchair in Degrassi Junior High. I know it wasn't Maya - cuz she looks completely different. This one looked like Voula on Crack (thanx A.J.) Anyone know?
*Mark* The character you are talking about is Avrianna, she
was only in the first season. Christian Campbell played Todd on
Degrassi. He was an extra in the scenes from Borden High...I
believe.

Many of the kids were sexually active. If you remember School's Out, at the graduation party at Lucy's house the 'boys', Joey, Snake and Wheels are playin' pool and talking about summer and girls and sex. Wheels mentions something about getting laid, and, of course, the conversation moves to make fun of Snake who was still a virgin. Joey was too however, until he 'made it' with Tessa.
QUESTION: Did CBC every get complaints about any of their episodes, or School's Out?
Jeremy Eaton
Newfoundland
*Mark* I think they may have gotten complaints, but I think
Playing With Time may have fought it out, and compared to some
American movies, it was not that bad. I think some scenes may
have been a bit controversial...

does anyone know why smake has such a hard time dealing with
death? i can totally understand him getting freaked finding
claude and getting angry wheels killed that baby by drunk
driving, but long before that-why did snake refuse to talk to
wheels after his parents were killed? i mean i can see having a
hard timer elating, but ignoring your best friend? i was just
wondering if maybe i missed some key plot element previous to
that to explain snakes "wimpyness" about that whole
situation...when i have been encountered with the same i have
been there to offer love and support for my friends...just
curious...
*Mark* Maybe it really affects him....We should write a Degrassi
World Fan Fiction story that deals with his problems coping with
death..It may have stemmed back from his upbringing or childhood.
It is too bad his fear of death was never really dealt with in
future episodes.

I also remember the episode where Arthur talked about steph going away to a bording school. I thought it was because she was too boy crazy?, not because of the lottery. Thats just my thought I haven't seen that one for a while
Thanks

Which of the Degrassi characters are married and have
children? That would be so cute if two of the actors married in
real life, like Pat and Stacie.
*Mark* I know Amanda Cook has a child....and I think Maureen
McKay has a child as well. I think many of the actors lost touch,
and I do not think any got married in real life. I know that
there are some relatives, like Maureen and Angela Deisach
(Heather and Erica Farell)Stacie and Robert Mistysyn (Caitlin and
Animation Designer are father and daughter), Sarah and
Christopher Charlesworth (Susie and Scooter), Yan Moore and
Kathryn Ellis (writer for Degrassi and publicist/writer for

Dorothy), Cathy and Anna Keenan (Liz& Rainbow), Stefan,
Sheila, and Ingvar Brogren (Snake, Kathleen's mum, and Snake's

hi all,
did anyone see the movie "married life" on city on monday night (in toronto...) well the actress who played the actress of the wife (its a long story and a kinda tacky movie) looked just like stephanie k, i wasnt home to see the credits but it looked a lot like her. anyway the movie was from 96, but she looked deathly skinny, but that could just be my impression, considering the last time i saw her she was just in her post pubescent pudge, i dunno
anyway, if anyone saw it i would be pleased to know that i am not just making things up to post hehehe

Heather...apparently (here is the scandal...) Erica and Heather
are NOT TWINS!!! They are siblings, but apparently one is a year
older than the other....WHAT A SHOCKER! I never knew this...I
would like to find out for sure if this is true.
-Corina
*Mark* I think they are twins, supposedly Angela was born 6
minutes before Maureen, but based on their identical looks, I
would think they are twins. AJ points out that Maureen (Heather)
has stained teeth, bigger teeth, rounder eyes than Angela (Erica)
etc...but they do look like identical twins to me.

*Mark* Remember "The Best Laid Plans"...Season 1, well
Stephanie and Arthur's mum go out on a date with someone, and
Stephanie goes out with Wheels, so the house is free, so Arthur
and Yick get Swamp Sex Robots from Yick's older brother, "it
is so hot, it will fry your eyeballs" was the famous quote I
believe. The plans are not so great when Stephanie's plans
intersect with her mum's, the two dates meet, Stephanie's mum
rebognkzes Wheels for being the guy who bought the condoms at her
pharmacy. She freaks, and Arthur opens the door to find otgher
grade seveners at the door wanting to see "Swamp Sex
Robots" Both Stephanie, Wheels, and Arthur are embarassed.

This is to Jenelle Cleary from Australia. What we did was
write a very sucky letter to the ABC, and get practically the
whole senior school to sign it, with addresses and phone numbers
as well. You could do the same if you're at school. We should
also get some sort of email/chainletter thing going, and then
email it to the ABC. Let me know what you think. Jeannine

Mike
*Mark* Well Trudi Owens had dark hair with a red piece in the
front. Also Trish always orange-red hair, but in season 5, she
stopped wearing her hair long, and started wearing in a mohawk,
with 4 big spikes. For School's Out, she grew out the shaved
sides and had her hair to her chin...without the mohawk hairdo.

Heather was trying to find that special moment when she can tell her sister the good news, that she found the perfect job. She had been going to law school while Erica was studying psychology, side by side at the University of Toronto. They both stayed at home for financial purposes, and after Erica came back from the Dominican Republic, she had missed her sister and parents so much, she could not even imagine leaving her family again. At age 24, Heather felt that she had to leave home. She had just finished her law degree, and was actively trying to find a job either as a lawyer, or maybe a professor, to teach law at a University. Her undergraduate degree was in history, so she thought that it provided a god basis for a teaching position at a University. She applied to many Universities, but never told Erica that she was thinking of going to the United States. Erica was soon to go for her Phd degree in psychology. She was very interested in studying twins and the effects of twins being separated at birth. She knew that she had some rough moments with Heather, but they had gotten closer through the past couple of years. She always told Heather how she could not make it without her support, especially when she had an abortion, or when she had gone out with abusive boyfriends. Heather was always the logical one who came to her rescue and Erica was beginning to depend on it. Heather asked her friends LD and Lucy for advice on how to break the news that she got an awesome teaching job at Harvard University,in Boston. LD and Lucy told her to break it to her easily, that she may get upset, and a the same time, the two girls were a bit teary eyed, that one of their best friends was leavign the country. Lucy was in Ryerson University, studying film and directing, and LD was studying medicine at the U of T. Heather had her legal documents accepted, and since she was on the NAFTA list of professionals, she was able to work legally in the USA. She got her VISA together and she was hinting at her parents that she would get paid more if she worked outside of Canada. She had been living on Pape Street, in the Beaches of East end Toronto for her whole life, sharing the same room with the same baby photos, in the same bed for as long as she can remember. She was always next to Erica, in case one of them has nightmares. She needed her privacy and she so desired it. She wanted her own bedroom, her own keys, and she wanted to start life, not as a twin, but as Heather Farrell. One of the first things that she did to change her appearance was to cut off her hair. She needed a professional cut that suited her face, but still was suited ehr curly hair. She cut her hair to her shoulders, and the response seemed very positive from her sister and parents. No one suspected that Heather was slowly changing throughout the next two months into a new version, to live in Boston, free from her past and free from her sister. She did feel sad because she loved Erica, they were the closest of friends, 100% related by genes, and they shared the same room for almost 25 years. She also wanted her freedom, which she hoped Erica would understand with the best intentions. It was not malicious of selfish, but it was her way of growing up and leaving the nest. Erica was still doing her studies, and it seemed she had no intentions of leaving her Pape Street residence for another four more years. She had a serious relationship with Howard for over 3 years, and she was well established in the psychology faculty. She had grown more dependent on family ever since she came back from the Dominican Republic. She missed everyone so much, that she said she would not leave for a long time. Dinner had approached when Heather decided to break the news to the family over Spaghetti and tomato sauce. Sitting at the square table, she decided to start telling them about her new haircut, and now she is looking for a big change in her life. Erica complimented Heather on the new haircut, and joked about how Heather wanted to be so similar to Erica. "Remember in high school, you used to copy my clothes and hair?", Heather and Erica laughed together, remembering how much they have changed through the years. They are so different now, with the biggest change when Erica became interested in psychology, while Heather became interested in history and law. This was a big change when the two girls decided to go for different degrees in University. They had been in elementary, junior high, and high school together, in the same class and doing the same things. They remember switching places often in school to go out on dates with different guys, get to do homework that the other twin did not like, and sometimes they would even fool their parents. They had grown up a lot in the past couple of years since University and now Heather was about to tell the family her greatest news. She was nervous, yet excited. She started by telling the how the job market for University professors is better in the USA, and that she did not want to continue with law. She wanted to teach. Her parents were disappointed, and Erica was happy that she was going into teaching. "Heather, I think you would make an awesome teacher and whereever you will be teaching, I will try to sit in on my little sisters classes." "Ha Ha", chuckled Heather. I'm onyl younger by 6 minutes. The few seconds came very slowly, as Heather tried to tell them, "Mum, Dad, Erica, I already got a job, but it is in Boston, At Harvard!" "WOW", said Heather's parents, and Erica did seem to have a big smile on her face, Heaher could tell that she was crying inside. Heather had told them that she found out 3 weeks ago, and that they needed an answer quickly. "I accepted yesterday morning", said Heather. Erica seemed more disappointed, because her reality was coming true, that one day she would have to part with her sister, that they would not be roomates forver, and that their dreams of marrying another set of handsome twins and living in the same house was not realistic. It was also not what Heather wanted. Although upset, Erica understood that there was a time when she just had to let go. She was in the midsts of gettign in a Phd program at U of T, and she was not about to pick up and leave and follow her twin sister. "Heather, I will miss you like crazy", and promise me that you will leave an empty seat for me to sit in on some of your classes. "sure, I will," aid Heather. Both her parents and Erica also said at the same time, to makes sure that there is extra room for them, because they will visit often. Heather took a breathe of relief, she was starting her new life as an individual, not only as a twin. She was happy to keep her other half, her closest friend of all Erica to visit her sometimes, and she was happy that Erica was so understanding.
