My girlfriend and I have noticed a resemblance to Bronco too. I guess WE know what you're talking about. ;-)

Actually, they touched rape, and more than once. There were two episodes with that teacher, and there was the episode with Liz, who remembers being raped by her mother's boyfriend.

*Mark* Mr. Colby sexually abused Lucy and Susie, I see your point, although are rape and sexual abuse synonymous? We do not know exactly what the stepfathger does to Liz, does he rape her, or sexually molest her...Is there a difference?
It is really subjective...

Another Aussie here, I was just wondering whether I could get in touch with Andrew Sutcliffe, who was saying he had copies of School's Out. I vaguely remember seeing it on the ABC about 4-5 years ago and I haven't heard of it since until I signed up here and now I am searching everywhere for it!!! Also notice to all other Aussies, seriously, write obscene letters to the ABC to get bloody Dad's Army off the 6pm time slot and Degrassi back on because it's been aleast 3 years since its been on right!!!!

*Mark* Please e-mail Andrew privately for ordering information, or maybe he can post something to the digest with regards to any information about purchasing his extra copies of "School's Out" Andrew's e-mail is asutc@mpx.com.au

hi all,

first in response to annie's post:

there are some characters who had enjoyable sex lives - lucy for example, although that was in the movie, not the series. but in my high school experiences, you really didn't know much about other people's sex lives unless something major came out of it - like pregnancy or illness. and some of the female characters did have 'bad' sides - lucy was into shoplifting, the twins and steph k. drank a lot. caitlin, melanie, kathleen and maya shared a couple of joints - although looking at their reaction, i think melanie sucked a few cones before she arrived at the party!

and regarding steph's departing: i can't remember when, but arthur i'm sure says something about her going off to private school.

i'm interested to hear any comments from degrassi fans regarding 'press gang' a british show aimed at a similar audience, about a group of high school students who run a newspaper aimed at teenagers.

thanks!

There was a question about what happened to Stephanie. I specifically remember her brother Arthur telling someone that since their mother had won the lottery, she was going to a private school and had to wear a uniform. In the new season Arthur was wearing a leather jacket ( I think) and was embarrased about the fact he was rich. As for the discussion about sex = pregnancy. It was said in School's Out that Alexa and Simon were virgins and that they were waiting until they were married. Whether anyone believes this I'm not sure. AS well, Caitlin asked Lucy about sex, which implied that Lucy and Bronco weresexually active. I just think it wasn't mentioned as a big thing.

In reply to Jeannine Thwaite... I am interested in either being part of your petition or starting up on in conjunction with yours. Can you please get back to me via the list regarding even the possiblity of getting some more help from other Aussie listees! We have to get it back on ABC TV!!! Or at least even get a screening of Schools Out again!

And on the subject of Stephanie - I vividly remember Arthur saying "Momhas sent her to some private school where they have to wear knee high socks" (when he was sitting in class checking the stockmarket in the newspaper)

Also in Australia, when Degrassi was shown, we first had a warning saying "This episode of Degrassi is aimed at teenage audiences" etc as it was shown at 5.30pm. Did anyone else around the world get these warnings before the program was shown?

Forever in Degrassi,

Jenelle

Hello. I just wanted to compliment you on your site--I found it on a whim one day, and was really taken back ... I used to watch DJH, etc. on PBS when I was in junior high and high school, and saw "School's Out" a few years ago on PBS. The site is awesome (I have both theme songs and the avi DJH intro)! I looked at your research paper, which I have to say is very well done ... 90210 is such a piece of crap and so much worse than any of the Degrassi shows. However, I wonder if you had taken into consideration "My So-Called Life," probably the only show that could possibly measure up to Degrassi in terms of its realistic approach to teenagers, etc. It ran on ABC in the Fall of 1994-Spring 1995 and was canceled in its first season (it had a dreaded 8pm thursday night time slot, up against Mad About You and Wings ... the NBC juggernaut). However, in recent years, MTV has picked the show up and it reruns periodically ... I have several episodes on tape. I just thought it would be an interesting thing to think of ... it was a wonderful show that wasn't given a chance. But kudos to your efforts with the Degrassi website. Now, if they'd only re-run it. I'd love to get a few of those shows on tape (especially the "High" ones).

Subject: Cruisin' Movie Night

Hello everyone! I'm writing to tell you that, yes, I did go to the movie night, and let me tell you it was one of the most amazing nights of my life! When I read the e-mail that Pat Mastroianni and Dan Woods were going to be there, I knew I had to go, so I got together my sister (who drives) and three of our friends (Rachael, Steph and Dave) and we took a little road trip to Oakville...

First person we met there was Dan Woods (Mr. Raditch). He was sooo nice and he was wearing his Degrassi Junior High jacket! We talked to him for a while and he was really cool, not like Raditch at all! We asked him if he could help us find Pat (Joey) and he was like, "Sure. Just meet me at the concession stand at the end of this movie, and I'll bring Pat." So we were freaking out for the entire movie (I still don't know which movie it was!) and then finally came the moment of truth. We went back to the concession stand and waited for Dan, and he did come, and he brought Pat! He looked so different! I couldn't believe I had seen him before in the night and hadn't even recognized him! His his hair was really short and no, he wasn't wearing the hat :). He was really friendly and they were both so excited that we drove so far to come see them (we live in Kitchener-Waterloo, not that far really). We talked with him for a while and found what he was up to, then we all got pictures and stuff, and it was really funny because the girl who worked at the concession stand told me that I could have all the free food I wanted if I took a picture of her and Pat! So I did, but I didn't really want anything but my friend Dave's like, "hey I'll get some onion rings." So she brings him this huge box, and right before Pat leaves, Dave goes, "Hey, do you want an onion ring?" And Pat's like, "Naw that's okay... well actually maybe I will." Then Dave was really excited because someone from Degrassi took his onion ring. I think it made his life. Then we went back to our car and screamed a lot, and realized, hey, these movies aren't really that good, so we went home. And that is all.

Cara
*Mark* Thanks Cara for your story

Subject: Snake's Nickname

Just one more thing I have to add this week... I was reading some of the Degrassi books, and I read two entirely different explanations for Snake's nickname, both of which were already posted by people here.

1. I read in the book that "Joey Jeremiah" that Snake was called Snake because he was tall and skinny. Very logical.

2. I read in the book "Stephanie Kaye" that Snake was called Snake because his real name was Mike Snakowski.

Hmmm.... how odd.
*Mark* The books were not necessarily written by Degrassi writers, although many of them were (Susin Neilsen, Kathryn Ellis...) I do not think William Pasnak and Catherine Dunphy wrote for the show....but I could be wrong. Another thing was that the books were based on the shows, but not mirrored to the shoe exactly. Snake's name was Archie Simpson. he was probably called Snake for being tall. I do not believe there was any explanation of his name.

My friends and I are having a sort of Degrassi Revival thing at the moment and we've got a petition going to get the ABC to run DJH and DH again. If you care, you could do the same. I sent this to the degrassi digest, and the guy told me to send it straight to you.

Degrassi World #23: Emma's Best Summer Ever
^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v

Emma, Chloe, and Sabrina are never late to Mr. Rick Munro's English class. All the grade 7 girls have a crush on him because he is the only teacher at Degrassi Junior High who wears leather jackets and rides a motorcycle. Plus he always shares the jar of black licorice that he keeps on his desk. They like to pretend that he is not happily married to Kathleen. Mr. Monro assigned the class to write an essay on their best summer vacation ever.

He was so impressed with Emma's essay that he asked her to read it in front of the class. Emma rose daintily from her seat, smoothed out her Marilyn Manson T-shirt, and began her story: "My favorite summer was when my mom (Christine) and I traveled across Canada and The United States in search of vintage merchandise to sell at Recycled Rubbish, our consignment shop. Mom just graduated Degrassi University and got a small business loan. It was the first time mom and I were independent, we lived with grandma until she got her business off the ground. "

"Mom rented this huge camper and we lived in it, quite nomadically, all summer. We ate meals at greasy spoon diners and when the built-in shower stopped working, we had to sponge bathe. Our mission was to acquire a stockpile of vintage clothes, books, records, and knick-knacks. I learned the fine art of haggling at flea markets, antique auctions, and rummage sales."

Between buying binges we saw all the famous landmarks--not cheesy tourist stuff, we saw the good landmarks. Like Roxbury in New York and The Whisky in Los Angeles. But what I remember most was bonding with my mom. Mom and I have always been like best friends, but this trip made me realize that she was truly an intelligent, fascinating person." Mr. Monro saw a reflection of Spike in Emma. "Like mother, like daughter," he said.
