Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 23:10:52 -0400

Hello Mark and Degrassi Fans! In the last digest someone asked how Snake got his nickname. We believe that the answer to this question can be found in the Degrassi book " Snake". We may be wrong about this, as it has been a few years since we have read the book, but we recall that the novel stated that his last name was something like Snakowski or Snakolski. We are not exactly sure why the book would state this, as in Degrassi High Snake's last name is Simpson. Well, we thought we would share this idea with you anyway!:):)

-Kristina and Larissa

*Mark* The Degrassi books do deviate from the show. His real name was Archie Simpson, and we d onot know why he was called Snake, but I do remember that there was that explanation in the book. Not all Degrassi writers wrote the Degrassi books, though, so they often deviated from the show.

She was one of the only characters on the show that I did not like. I don't know why. Maybe because she was such a goof. I have so much contempt for her. If I saw her in a person, I'd probably be a jerk and not separate reality from television, that is how much I detested her character. Who did everyone else hate on the show?

Joel
*Mark* I could not find anything wrong with her, but I did not like how she showed off about the new car she got, she was a bit uptight, but her character was not developped very much in DJH/DH, she was a hall-walker, (as AJ puts it), so I remember her more from Kids of Degrassi Street more.

Hi Mark

Do you have the audition tapes for the kids of degrassi (I think this is the very first of all the degrassi series), the first episode of the kids of degrassi, The first episode of degrassi junior high?

Thanks
Jay
*Mark* Sorry Jay, I have no audition tapes, order Degrassi videos at http://www.degrassi.org/pertinentaddresses.htm

Subject: Disapointed about Schools Out.

Hi there. My name is Luke Irwin.
First of all I'm a very big fan of Degrassi High. And I hardly missed any shows.
But last nite (Aug 23,1998) I saw School's Out for the first time on Showcase TV.
I really enjoyed it up until the end. I think Caitlin should of taken Joey back at the wedding. I know it was wrong what Joey did but people do make mistakes. Maybe not get married right away but they could take things one step at a time. That would probably be an other episode.
The biggest reson why I feel this way is that they were always my two favorite characters in the show and I always thought they were good together. They may have had there ups and downs, but every body has those. And I can also relate to there problems. Joey felt lonely and needed a friend because Caitlin was working so much and he figured he was leaving anyways. And I don't think he really meant it to go so far. Those things do happen in real life. And I'm not saying what he did was right but he is only human. I didn't agree with Catlin just dropping university for Joey but they could have had a long distance relationship and she could have still gotten engaged. They sometimes work.(Speaking from experience.) And I think Caitlin could have forgiven him for what he did. Love conquers all. And I don't think Joey would of cheated again. I think he learned his lesson. But this is only my opinion. That is the only thing that has been on my mind since i say School's Out last nite. Thanxs for reading.
Luke Irwin
*Mark* I disliked School's Out. It was a sad ending, Joey, Wheels, and Snake brrak up, Caitlin and Joey breaks up, I think she should have forgave him, and gave him one more chance.
Anyone who wants to give a new ending to School's out, can send it to webmaster@degrassi.org and I will print it for the next Degrassi World Fan Fiction Issue.
I also thought that it was too bad about Lucy's temporary blindness, and that Wheels killed the 2 year old baby. It was a very sad, bleek ending to the series.
Also the film only concentrated on Joey, Caitlin, Wheels, Snake, Lucy, not the other cast members..
I also found it weird how Caitlin and Lucy became such good friends, when they were not friends in DJH/DH

Hi!
Just a comment..I'm 27 so ya there are older Degrassi fans out there. Anyway, I was kind of upset with School's Out. I had to work the night School's out was on, set the vcr to tape it..but its not on my tape! I wanted to watch it tonight, and it's not on my tape!! The commercial said it was on 6pm where I live and in my tv guide, and yet when I taped it at 6pm some other stupid shows were on instead. Did this happen to anyone else?? I hope School's out is repeated again because I haven't seen it in so long I forget most of it. I might still have a copy of it somewhere from when it was on originally. I'll have to look. Well anyway...I do remember being disapointed in the movie. I didn't like how they started a year after the last episode of Degrassi and how it wasn't explained how Caitlin and Lucy became such good friends. I also didn't like how Wheel's was turned into a loser drunk. His parents were killed by a drunk driver you'd think the last thing he'd want to do is drink and drive. WEll anyway these arejust a few of my comments on the movie.
Rachel
*Mark* I was quite disappointed with the film again. I will be listing the soundtrack for School's out very soon, due to many requests.

I missed School's out on Sunday due to taping probs, I couldn't be home the night it was on because I had to work. I set the VCR to tape it at the time the commercial said it was on and when my tv guide said it was on. For some odd reason it wasn't on when it was supposed to be so I don't have it on tape. I did however find my old copy of it from when I taped it when it was on originally. Those of you that actually watched it, did you notice Neve Campbell's brother Christian was in the movie?? He was Tessa's date, the guy sitting by the pool smoking pot with Yick, at Lucy's grad party. Cool huh..I just started watching it..so I wonder who else I'll spot in the movie??

I've been subscribed since #20 and I've grown attached to this Digest. I guess I'm the only "old fart" subscriber. I'm 51 and I've seen every Jr High and every DJH episode numerous times. I've been using them in my work since 1989. I teach 7th grade English and I show episodes to my classes to provoke discussion and provide topics for their writing. It has been an incredibly valuable asset to my teaching and to student learning, as well.

I fell in love with the characters and the format of the show from the first episode I saw on American PBS. With so many viewings of the series, I feel as if I know the characters intimately...and I like them all so much. The warmth and humanity that suffuses the characters has been indelibly tatooed on my teaching style. The DJH kids are as real to me as are my own students. And it has helped me to understand that my students have lives: problems, families, situations that may color their behavior and performance at school.

My students watch these episodes and we talk about them. We talk about events, but more importantly, we discuss "character" and characters. They recognize Joey's often thoughtless irresponsibility, but they also come to know that he is so full of good. Who could possibly be a better friend to Wheels immediately following the death of his adopted parents?

There are many other examples, of course. Spike, Shane, Caitlin, Arthur, and the others are speaking to kids in a way that those actors may only now be beginning to understand. I hope that as adults today they realize the value of the work they did on the series. It changed my life as a teacher, and I am absolutely certain that it has affected many of my students in a wholly positive manner. Students who come back always mention the Degrassi episodes as one of their best memories of my class.

Keep up the good work!
Dennis

*Mark* Thanks for your comments....I am sure it makes the cast and crew happy that they still touch so many people.

i love the site.
i have been watching degrassi and loving it for years. was degrassi high filmed at the centennial college building on mortimer and logan?? it kind of looks similar, but it could just be the architecture of the time.
i have seen alex (from all three shows) on the subway in toronto, i was surprised not to see him in his trademark beige corderoy sportscoat!! (the show was sooo real!!) :)
and i saw alexa shopping at the bay with her mom or someone. she was talking greek. the ethnicity of the show was just so great huh???

schools out was so great. and interesting because it reminded me of kids of degrassi street because of the outside of school setting and stuff like that.

anyway keep it up
annie from toronto

*Mark* Centennial College, which housed the filming for Degrassi High for 2 years was on Carlaw and Mortimer...You can see the back of the building on Pape.

Well, well, well. It seems our good old gang isn't as pure as we thought. I had never seen the movie before and it was quite educational-to say the least. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it. I'm especially happy that Caitlin finally gave Joey the boot. I'm sorry but any guy who refers to women as "chicks" and uses them like dishrags doesn't deserve my sympathy. And what's with this "getting in her pants" business? Nice talk. I was hoping that by this time Joey would have more respect for women. Caitlin is way too intelligent and worldly for Joey. I guess Joey can't take all the blame though with Tessa coming on to him the way she did. I wish she'd told Joey about the pregnancy and the abortion. I wondered about people like Arthur, Liz, Kathleen, and Melanie. Where were they when all hell broke loose? Drinking smoking pot, swearing and nudity too? tsk tsk. Finally, they seemed to be acting like regular teenagers! I wish my grad had been that exciting. (pout, pout) I really hoped that we would see Spike finally getting together with someone. Oh well. Kudos to Snake for finally standing up to Joey and Wheels! Mark, I hope you don't consider my comments as "bashing", mostly I'm just being facetious (did I spell that right?) By the way, has anyone seen Bronco in that Levi's hip hop commercial? That's it for now, see you
Macarena
*Mark* I agree with everything you posted. Joey treated Tessa like garbage, she was an idiot for coming on to him, while he was dating Caitlin. I felt bad for Caitlin, working hard, while Joey was working not as hard at Shoppers DrugMart (The pharmacy in Toronto, Queen and Carlaw street, across from Playing With Time) In Quebec, we call it Pharmaprix. Anyway, he was sleeping with Tessa, disrespecting Caitlin, while she was giving up sooooo much for him. He called her a chick, getting into her pants...The Degrassi kids were not that innocent and pure afterall, from a quote from a colmnist, "They had beer bottles permanently attached to their hands"....I think School's Out" was extreme opposite to DJH/DH...It did not seem like the same kids, although it was one year later, they seemed more corrupted....It was also out of character for Joey/ Wheels, and Snake to break up, but it is normal for best friends to lose touch...Spike, Liz, the twins, LD, Melanie, Arthur, Kathleen, where were they?

*Mark* When my web partner for Degrassi Legacy, http://www.degrassi-junior-high.org Natalie Earl, interviewed Darrin Brown who played Dwayne, he told Natalie Earl, that Neil Hope has "disappeared off the face of this planet"...so I guess many of the cast have lost touch, and many of them do not know what is new with Neil Hope.

Degrassi World #19 Bethany makes a decision

With school starting next week, clothing shopping is the paramount concern for the new grade 7 class at Degrassi Junior High.

Sabrina conned $300 from her parents Caitlin and Joey. This is the first year she gets to pick her clothes by herself. Hooray! No more sweater vests and chino pants. This year she'll be sporting Sketchers and super baggy Levis. She is trying to change her image from preppy to skater babe.

Emma has never worn a "new" outfit in her life. She gets all the vintage clothing she needs from Recycled Rubbish, her mother Christine's funky, vintage consignment shop. She and Christine have similar taste in clothing. Once an elderly lady asked Emma if her mother knew she was wearing a red leather miniskirt and 1970's platform heels. Emma answered "Yeah, I borrowed this outfit from her."

Once again Justin and Jacob drive their parents, Heather and Derek, crazy by choosing identical outfits. The twins have worn matching outfits since the day they were born. It enables them to pull pranks on unsuspecting teacher and girlfriends.

Chloe mooched a whooping $500 from her folks Archie and Melanie. She wants to be a model so she tries to dress like one, emulating styles from Vogue and Cosmopolitan. This is the first year she is allowed to wear makeup, so she goes full glam: acrylic fingernails, false eyelashes, and body glitter.

Bethany's parents Michelle and Bryant can't afford to give her a clothing allowance this year. Bryant was laid off from his job, so they could no longer afford to pay for both ballet academy and new clothes. Bethany decided that dance lessons were more important. She only had 5 more years to study before she would be auditioning for the Royale Ballet of Canada.
The end.
