News from Oren Shay of Degrassi 2005:
Some of you knew the Degrassi Fan Club when it began over a year ago. You helped us, and you made it happen, the Degrassi community on the internet got bigger, a lot of great sites opened, a lot of new fans from all over the world joined the community. As you all know, the Degrassi Fan Club had become, Degrassi 2005, a fan fiction site for Degrassi with a lot of other stuff as Articles, Files and etc.. But, the time has come when we got to say, we hav had enough, it's a lot of work, and now, because of other projects that came up we just don't have the time for 2005. Maybe some day we will get back to it. For now, we are moving on to another project. So the site will still be up, you can check it out whenever you want and you can still e-mail us if you want. To all of those who sent ideas, characters and plots and didn't get a reply from us, we are very sorry about that, again, we didn't have the time. Please forward your ideas to Paige's 2005 site. And again, we are not put out of the Degrassi scene completly, the site is still up, just not updated, and we will still an wer e-mail if you send them to us, and of course we are still reading the digest. Hope to hear from you all.

I agree wholeheartedly that Northwood was a direct
ripoff of Degrassi, and it died a quick death - yet a few
things did come of Northwood. Specifically that the
people who played the main characters (Jason and
Maria, I believe) both seem to have pretty good acting
careers.
Check out
http://us.imdb.com/Title?%22Northwood%22+(1991)
for the main characters -- seems they are all steadily
working actors, doing much more in the entertainment
field than Degrassi actors.
Who remembers Catwalk?
http://us.imdb.com/Title?%22Catwalk%22+(1992)
Not a bad show while it lasted. It's listed in the Internet
Movie Database as the first thing Neve Campbell did
in show business, but I'm sure it's not.

Hey Mark, I used to watch the show called Northwood too. I
remember one
night during the summer, It was during a time when they were
airing
Degrassi reruns on tv. I went to faithfully watch Degrassi, only
to
discover they had put Northwood in its place. I was
disapointed..I mean
how was I gonna get my weekly fill of Degrassi? I ended up
becoming
addicted to Northwood, although I wouldn't say it was a carbon
copy of
Degrassi. It was similar in that it revolved around a group of
high
school kids. The only difference between Northwood and Degrassi,
Northwood episodes didn't show the school that much, it mostly
focused
on the local hangout and certain characters houses. As with
Degrassi
episodes rarely showed places outside of the school. In my
opinion
Northwood was just as good as Degrassi. It was different than
Degrassi
but that's why I liked it. If you didn't know..since Northwood
went off
the air one of the girls in the Northwood show, ended up doing a
whole
bunch of made for tv movies. Also one of the Northwood girls
ended up
in a minor role on Days of our lives.

I was reading alot about how they covered every topic they
could think of and that's why they ended the show. But I can
think of alot of topics that they didn't really cover. I thought
it would have been nice if they would have shown all three of the
options a teenager can make when they're pregnant. But instead
they showed giving birth and abortion twice. I think they could
have had someone put their kid up for adoption. I know in a way
that they did cover adoption (Wheels) but still it would have
been better if they showed a teenager putting up her kid for
adoption. Also they didn't really cover the whole gay issue. The
closest they got to that was Snake's brother. I think it would
have been good if one of the main characters were gay. Gangs
would have also been a nice topic to cover. I know someone
mentioned that gangs aren't a big problem in Canada but I think
they are. Here in Edmonton we've been having a major problem with
gangs. A few other topics that would have provided good story
lines are rape and exchange students.

I dont remember exactly what was said about Northwood, but I
would like
to defend it..
Degrassi comes off (to me) as the type of show not only to
entertain,
but to teach lessons to those who watch (younger age people),
Northwood
was in my opinion more soap opera oriented rather than a degrassi
esque
show. Personally I loved Northwood when it was on.. Instead of
being
limited to mostly school adventures (like degrassi) Northwood
dealt with
matters outside of school.
The characters were just as "normal" as the Degrassi
characters.. with
the exception of a few pretty boys (like the guy who gets
paralyzed
while drunk driving).. but aside from that the people were pretty
normal
looking.
I have never really posted to the digest before so I dont know if
Im
rambling on or not.. it doesnt matter.
Northwood so far has bupkiss support on the net, but that could
change
very quickly.
I think its time for AJ to make a Northwood page.. once I find
some lost
episodes I have on tape
tahtah
*Mark* I would like to defend Northwood...it was with an older
group, and they were less innocent, more of a soap opera....less
moral. I think it is difficult to compare. Degrassi dealt with
things in the school, Northwood was more similar to
90201...anyone have Northwod episodes, I can pay for you to send
me one or two...My honours thesis is on Television, so I think
Northwood and Bev Hills 90210 are better comparisons.

I think I appreciate Degrassi more now in my old age of 24
than I did as a real teenager. In an era of unrealistic teen
shows like Full House, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and Saved By
The Bell - Degrassi was truthful, it was like watching my own
life. It felt so good to watch the characters go through all the
painful stuff I had to face.
*Mark* I agree...I watch the episodes 10 years later, and I am
the show was on...It was real, something to relate, not
shallow...I am glad high school is over...Dealing with difficult
teenage years in high school makes one stronger, or sends them
over the edge, literally.

Subject: PRESERVATION OF DEGRASSI SITES
Date: Mon, 3 Aug 1998 00:58:51 +1000
MARK,
I think one thing you must do sometime is start a move to protect
all Degrassi school sites - particularly that famous little Jnr
High in Daisy St Etobicoke - that it get them on the National
Trust list. Historically significant buildings in Australia go on
to the National Trust list which means they cannot be demolished
or altered and must be preserved. If that hasn't happened
alreadyI suggest we start a campaign to ensure they go on to the
Canadian equivalent, because imagine the horror if a cash
strapped Ontario govt sells off one of those sites for a housing
subdivision or industrial site ( as has happened to many schools
here in recent years ). We must protect these famous sites :- the
Jnr High, what's left of Degrassi High, the Kids of Degrassi St.
School and I also think that little Degrassi Grocery Shop in
Degrassi Street. I trust you will get a move on in this regard
for posterity's sake and all the people on the Digest list will
help ( perhaps by contacting their local MP etc ) as would any of
the cast and crew of the show. Andrew Sutcliffe Melbourne
Australia
*Mark* I do not think the government is romantic and passionate
enough to make landmarks sacred. Local, provincial ,or federal
governments are concerned with money, and not with commemorating
Degrassi sites. 13 BUSY street, a Degrassi hangout closed
down...becuase it went out of business and the Degrassi grocery
has a different sign in front. It is red, a KIT KAT chocolate bar
sign...Things cannot stay the same and the landmarks must be so
important in history in order for funds to be set aside to
preserve them. I doubt any historical organization would try to
preserve the school on Daisy Street, as it is used, and not
vacant. The Playing with Time building is still owned by Kit
Hood, as he told me, so the PWT sign is still there, but there is
another company who is renting it out. If the land gets sold, PWT
may be torn down, and a larger home, or whatever will be built. I
do not think it is historical enough, or important enough for
Toronto residents, or Canadians to maintain it like a museum
exhibit. This is only my opinion.

Degrassi World #15- Nancy Becomes The 2nd Woman Prime Minister of
Canada, by Mark Polger
^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^
Note: This story is an expansion of the character Nancy Kramer,
and Rachel Hewitt, both played by actress Arlene Lott on Degrassi
Junior High/ Degrassi High, and The Kids of Degrassi Street. To
all Canadian fans, please do not get offended with my
political/social views.
Nancy waited anxiously at home with her husband Bill, and friends Caitlin, Tim, Michelle, Bryant, Trish and Mark. She waited for this day to come so badly, as she has climbed the corporate ladder so far, this would make her dream come true. After graduating from law school at the tender age of 21, Nancy went to work for the Supreme Court of Canada. Her undergraduate degree was in political science, and there was still a fire inside of her burning to leave law and pursue her career as a politician. She can remember her fond days at Degrassi fighting with Kathleen trying to win school president. She knew Kathleen did not have a chance. Nancy was an excellent speaker, even better than Lucy, (but Lucy was more popular). She got top marks, was the editor for the school newspaper, and fought for her beliefs and her causes. She always took a conservative approach to things, and she was hoping that her party would win the seats to make her the 2nd Prime Minister of Canada, since Kim Campbell. She was munching on popcorn, and chips with her friends in her cosy, 4 bedroom apartment in the Beaches, near Degrassi street. Her two daughters, Amy and Rebecca, were also sitting with her, not understanding her anxiety, yet excited that their mother allowed them to stay up late to watch Mommy win a prize. They did not understand what the prize was, but they knew that if she won, they would have to leave their school and move to Ottawa. The two girls, age 12, and 10 were so frustrated with moving, because they loved their neighbourhood, and they loved walking on the boardwalk by the beach. Two anchorpersons were at one of the polling stations and they disclosed the big mystery, the conservatives have won, and Nancy Kramer-Smith has become Prime Minister. Nancy rose up with her friends with extreme joy. She screamed like a mad woman who just won the lottery. She felt a rush of joy come as she would not have to commute from Toronto to Ottawa back and forth to attend meetings at the House of Commons. She was sad to leave the neighbourhood she grew up in, but she and Bill were looking forward to moving to Ottawa. When the news reached the local TV stations, the radios, and the local newspapers soon were contacted to print on the first page of the Toronto Sun, "Kramer-Smith wins!" and "2nd woman to become Prime Minister" She got phone calls from her old aquaintences at high school, her dorm mate at University of Toronto, Joanne, and Lucy with her husband Bob. Derek called from prison congratulating her on her win, as he was following the elections from his brand new colour TV in his cell. Joey was in a pub in the Annex, near the University of Toronto, when he found out. He instantly called her and teased her about it. He asked her if he can crash at her new home at Sussex Drive. She said anytime. Archie called from his office at the high school he is working in B.C. He was on his coffee break, when he found out. He called his wife, Erica, who then told her twin Heather. A big group of her old junior high school chums surprised her at her door, asking her how she felt being the 2nd woman in Canada to hold office. She felt like a million dollars..."That is how much you will making, from our tax dollars", retorted Caitlin, always with a quick, smart comment. The gang laughed, took all their kids to 13 BUSY ST. to have a party. Nancy told Bill all the stories she had with her friends from school. Tim, her best friend, was always so supportive and was truly a great friend. He helped her out, with writing speeches, and with making plans too, as he was also a politician, but at the local level. He was not interested in being the leader of a party. Nancy, Bill, and the kids ate their burgers, fries, and sipped chocolate shakes, and then strolled home, stomachs full, where they had to decide whether to sell the home, or sublet it for her years while Nancy was in office. They decided to sell the home, but hope to return to the Beaches after. She did not want to spend the rest of her life in Ottawa, but she was excited to move into a new city, where there is a great Canadian spirit. She had high hopes for her move, and that the permanence was good for the girls. She hoped that they would adjust, and that Bill would be able to be transferred as he worked for MATROX. He was an electrical engineer and he knew that he could find a job, or get transferred easily. The girls were ready for their move, which was supposed to take place in one month from now. The Prime Minister who was leaving office, Howard Galganov, invited Nancy and her family for dinner at Sussex Drive. He and his wife are planning to move back to Montreal, and Howard will continue talking on the radio and fighting for equal language rights for Quebecers. Nancy and Bill got a tour of the Sussex Drive estate, while the girls played outside in the fenced backyard. They both looked at each other and knew that this was their new home. Nancy's projects were to lower taxes, keep social benefits, and possibly initiate capital punishment. She wanted to make sure crime was the lowest in the world, and that she was certain that the abolishment of capital punishment was a big mistake. Her other plans were to raise more money for Eastern Canada, and to stop the drug problems and crime in B.C. This was only her dream, but she had the power to make some positive changes. THE END
