This is in response to RedRose who mentioned the television show, Swans Crossing. I remember watching that one summer a few years ago. What happened to the show? All that I recall is a bunch of rich kids zooming around town on scooters and one of the girls having an elevator in her bedroom . Does anyone know anything else about this show ?

I have only recieved a few digests so far, but I love it. I was just wondering which Degrassi kids dated in real life.

*Mark* On one of the Interviews that Ms. Natalie Earl has done with some Degrassi castmembers, Pat Mastroianni dated Neve Campbell, who, with her brother Christian, were extras on Degrassi for the early years. Maureen Deisach (Heather Farrell) dated Michael Carry (Simon Dexter) in real life, as noted from one of Natalie Earl's interviews with Degrassi castmembers.

I am surprised to hear that Neve Campbell was on Degrassi. Did I read this right, or was it her brother who was on ? Do you know which episodes ?. Thanks a lot. By-the-way, your site is very thorough, and an absolute joy to visit ! Yvette

*Mark* Yes, Neve and Christian Campbell were on Degrassi Junior High for only one season I believe. Please check out http://www.degrassi-junior-high.org/INTERVIEWS and check out more information about Neve and Christian Campbell.

On Saturday July 11, I went to Harbourfront (on the shores of beautiful Lake Ontario) in Toronto to see The Herbaliser & Kardinal Offishall give a free concert. I definitely saw Cathy Keenan/"Liz" there enjoying the phat beats. That's it!!

Later!!

Subject: The Maya thing

Hey there once again...

1.) You sure are right Mark...that Maya thing is getting way out of hand, I mean, I've felt racism before (still do), but if I could free my future children of it, I would do it in a heartbeat, besides, maybe Maya thought the non-disabled guy was cuter...maybe Natalie Earl made a mistake (Mistake in the sense of not being able to foreshadow Ravi's feelings) by even *mentioning* if the two guys were handicapped or not...[I am NOT dissin anyone] it *could* have just been a story of two guys that liked Maya, both different, say personality/physical attractiveness wise...then the emotional roller coaster thing would work out (Also, they never showed guys into Maya during the real show anywayz, this story thus would be fun anywayz)...

A lot of things Ravi said I did not agree with, but I inferred from him, that, not that I want to start anything, he thought because Maya is disabled doesn't mean that a story having two guys liking has to mention whether or not the two guys are handicapped, and as far as the complications of birth, etc[In the real Degrassi writing, we saw a big fuss over Michelle and BLT, but what about Lucy and Clutch]...HELLO...she is only dating, we're not talkin marriage until the end of the episode, but still, you know what I mean

2.) I have a question about the Degrassi World episodes that we read each week:

I love reading those, but one thing. The Degrassi world is based on the show, right? If so, I'm confused as to the parents. I can see Heather and Wheels, but Joey and Caitlin? School's out broke them up for good...and what about Snake and Melanie? Snake was with Michelle last we saw...please explain, I don't get it...Thanks

*Mark* As Natalie Earl and I came up with Degrassi World, we can say that Fan Fiction comes from re-writing, and re-visioning the series. When Natalie wrote Tessa Keeps Her Baby, it was written as if Tessa did not have the abortion and she went ahead with the pregnancy. Natalie expands out of the Degrassi Series, and goes in different areas that were not covered. In Natalie's (and my mind as well) Caitlin and Joey do patch things up and get married and have children. This is only fiction and we cannot base our thoughts on the end of School's Out. There are so many possibilites that we can delve into. About the Maya issue: We have come to an agreement that many of us disagree. In future digests, I would appreciate no condescending or insulting towards other subscribers, or it will be edited out before Degrassi Digest comes out.

Subject: Youth Gangs in Canada
Date: Mon, 13 Jul 1998 11:00:33 PDT

This is in regards to Mark's response that youth gangs are not a problem in canada. I am an 18 year old girl living in Toronto canada. Previously I lived in Rexdale, Ontario which is a suburb of Toronto. This area of Toronto is extremely violent and gang-filled, reminicent of South-Central L.A., although perhaps not quite as bad. I used to hear gunshots going off at night behind my apartment building. My Catholic high school was centred directly in the centre of rexdale also known as "The West Side". The high school was often evacuated due to stabbings, and guns were regularly seen on the premises. The school was also a regular gathering place for drug dealers, and assorted ethnic gangs. Police were seen regularly in the hallways and the surrounding mall and apartment buildings were the site of many shootings and drug busts. i would say that Canada, in particular, Ontario, does have a problem with Youth gangs.

This however, is a new phenomenon. As Canada becomes more and more Americanized, youth gangs are becoming more prominent in an otherwize peaceful country. It is becoming a difficult problem to deal with. I now live in the downtown area of Toronto and I must say that I feel a million times safer than I ever did in the suburbs. There are still many youth gangs in the area, particulalry around high schools, however I feel safe walking home alone at night, something i wouldn't even think of doing when I lived in Rexdale, for fear of being raped, shot or stabbed. would have to say that the reason gang-related problems were never shown on Degrassi, is that Canadian youth gangs are a recent problem, having only become prominent in the past few years, after Degrassi had been taken off of the air. If Degrassi was on today, you can bet your life that youth gangs would have a suficient space in the spotlight.

*Mark* Thank you for your informative post. I appreciate the fact that you have corrected me upon a topic that I am not specialized in. I did a course on Social Deviance and we did study deviance from a Canadian perspective. When we studied youth gangs in Canada, we found that it was not a major problem, and that in Vancouver, and in Ontario, there were some youth gangs. In suburban parts of Ontario the main findings were middle class female youth who made up most of the youth gangs. In Vancouver, it was mainly comprised of working class male youth. I thank you for correcting my errors and for addressing the issue from your point of view.

Well, I'm new to the Degrassi list, and glad to be here. I see a lot of requests for people looking for old Degrassi episodes and wondering where you can see them on TV (and I know I want the answers to these questions too). I propose a list of where you can buy/rent/get ahold of Degrassi tapes and a list of stations (with time, part of country, etc) that are still showing Degrassi. That way we could head off the repeat questions, and help everyone find out the best place to get it. I would be more than happy to keep this list and it could be posted on Degrasi.org, or posted to the newsletter periodically, or I could make a page or whatever. So if anyone knows where to see Degrassi on TV or where to get tapes of Degrassi (I'm not sure whether to include tape traders in this or not, since they are still available and that would most probably be illegal...or would it since it is shown on public TV? Anyone know?) you can either email me at dirk@one.net (which would be preferable since that would keep the newsletter traffic somewhat down) or if you do post it to the newsletter I'll see it there and start the list.

Steve
*Mark* You are talking about the page http://www.degrassi.org/pertinentaddresses.htm but if you want to browse through old Digest issues, and make a page about the channels, and networks that still show Degrassi, you can send it to me at webmaster@degrassi.org along with your photo, and I can put the page up and give you credit.

Greetings from Melbourne AUSTRALIA,
There one thing on your website I don't understand info about the length of Degrassi episodes Mark said they are 30 min or 22 minutes depending on whether commercials apply. Most of the Australian screened episodes on commercial free ABC-TV ran 25 minutes (and they were on the higher resolution PAL system not NTSC. Any ideas ? I have most on video tape. Lets have a big debate on this vital Degrassi point. WHO DID THE BEST ACTING IN THE SHOW ? My nominations are for Rebecca Haines (as Kathleen) followed by Sara Ballingall (as Melanie). [Not that all the cast didn't do a fantastic effort ]. Rebecca had I think the hardest part in the show to play the grump then the abused gal and we all know she's not like that in person ( in fact she's a babe ). Sara also had a critical part to accompany Rebecca's and she did it perfectly. Melanie was a perfect balance to Kathleen and without that pair (I won't say "dynamic duo" ) the show would have seriously lacked something. This is of course putting aside the fact Sara in real life is quite a bit like Melanie. I will add to this topic next session. I may be a bit biased on this point because I'm sweet on both of these gals (and the fact Sara looks a lot like my mum did when he was young may be influencing my view ). But objectively I think these two were the best. What does everone else think?

Andrew Sutcliffe

*Mark* I'm curious, but how do you know Sara is similar to her character Melanie?
Thank you for your comments. To all subscribers: Please feel free to send posts on who you thought did the best acting on the series.
About the 22 mins and 30 mins, on PBS in the USA, there were no commercials, so the full version of Degrassi was shown. On CBC or Showcase, in Canada, there were commercials, so some minor parts were cut out.
Check out http://www.degrassi.org/degrassifacts.htm for some other interestign Degrassi facts.

[Author's note: This story is the sequel to "Stage Fright" from Season #2 of Degrassi Junior High.

After Susie's slumber party, Kathleen, Melanie, Caitlin, and Jyoti take
turns hosting their own sleep-overs. Each week, the girls continue to hold
seances and experiment with the OUIJA (weegee) board. Their addiction leads
to the formation of Sisterhood of Sorcery, a secret society devoted to
witchcraft and pagan rituals].

Kathleen was the self-ordained high priestess of Sisterhood of Sorcery. It
all began when she discovered the Occult section of a New Age book store.
She purchased several books on Witchcraft Practice and Theory. Unfulfilled
by her own life, Kathleen was eager for a fantasy world filled with
supernatural powers and elaborate ceremonies. She was especially fascinated
by the immortality and reincarnation aspects. It was exciting to imagine her
past lives: who knows if she was a slave or an empress; a saint or a harlot.

At first the other girls joined the Sisterhood as a joke. But the role
playing game escalated into a religion. The girls even started to dress like
witches, with ethereal and gothic inspired clothing. Kathleen transformed
her room into a spiritual shrine--adorned with candles, incense, tarot
cards, crystals, gemstones and amulets.

Then came the initiation ceremony. In a black cauldron, Kathleen brewed a
potion made of red wine, mint leaves, honey, and olive oil. The final
ingredient was five drop of blood, harvested through each girl pricking her
finger. After partaking of the sacramental potion, the girls were branded
with a witches mark: a star and moon insignia (Don't worry they used rub-on
tattoos). Hence the enchantresses were anointed and christened: Persephone
(Melanie), Aphrodite (Caitlin), Venus (Kathleen), Ishtar (Jyoti), and
Belladonna (Susie).

At each meeting they would pray to mother Earth and perform chants, dances
and songs. Each girl developed her Book of Shadows: her collection of
folklore, spells, incarnations, rituals, and recipes. Tradition dictates
that the book be destroyed upon the witches death as not to reveal secrets
to nonbelievers.

It was innocent until they decided to abuse their powers of voodoo and
wish-granting. Such as when Melanie cursed Amy and Allison and they
mysteriously caught chicken pox; and when all the boys dumped their
girlfriends to chase after Caitlin. Kathleen became so possessed that she
had hallucinations of dancing with the Devil. The Sisterhood made the
unanimous decision to perform an exorcism and then abandon witchcraft
forever. Till this day, none of the girls will admit their rendezvous with
the forbidden arts. THE END
