2) Look out for my Degrassi Pilgrimage Photos- coming soon on http://www.degrassi.org !
3) "Dancing on the Moon" a new movie directed by Kit Hood will be released to theatres in Canada on September 18, 1998. Here is a narrative description of Dancing on the Moon:
"What looks to be another uneventful summer for thirteen-year-old Madeleine turns out to be a pivotal season in her life, beginning with her older sister's departure for medical school and soon followed by a surprise visit from an eccentric aunt. As if sharing her room with this unusual woman wasn't enough, Madeleine suddenly finds herself unable to escape the affections of her classmate Freddy and notices that even her best friends are beginning to act differently. Madeleine tries to make sense of it all with the help of her trusted stuffed companion, Rex, but his animated canine responses offer few answers. Ultimately, it is a tragic event that shifts Madeleine's outlook and fuels her to make some major changes of her own."

Hello folks:
I have been reading the discussion about the differences between the American and Canadian versions of Degrassi. One episode that has always intrigued me was the one were Joey walked thru the cafe naked. I was pretty shocked that a normal daytime show would have nudity of any sort but especially in that the American version was NOT edited. My question is: Was the Canadian version of this episode edited for the nudity? Also, is mild nudity common on normal Canadian TV?
Another question, off the topic: Is gang activity common in Canada? I have realized that Degrassi hit on ALMOST every subject possible yet gang activity doesn't seem to one of them. I am just wondering if it is a subject not relevant to Canada or is it a subject that Degrassi chose not to have an episode on. When I say gangs, I don't mean a group like Dwayne's. I mean hard core gangs and gangster types..
- Wayne Roache

*Mark* As for your two questions, the Canadian version of
Degrassi was not edited out for nudity. I was in shock to see
nudity in both Bad Blood (Degrassi Season 5), and in School's
Out. About youth gangs. I have studied youth gangs in Canada in
my Social Deviance class (I am doing an Honours in Sociology) and
statistics shos that there are not many youth gangs in Canada,
mainly in Vancouver, with working class youth, and in parts of
Toronto, where the gangs are mainly middle class female high
school students. Youth gangs are not a major problem in Canada.

Thought I'd write for the first time in ages. When I look at
the social
structure of the Degrassi series, it actually does often remind
me of my
high school years. I was lucky enough to go to two great high
schools.
The first was too small to bother with the bitchy cliqueyness
that goes on,
and by the time I started at the second we were all sort of
beyond that.
So, yeah, I don't think Degrassi is that strange. People did
go through
stages of not liking each other 'completely' - as my friends and
I did.
But basically there was a big bunch of us who were friends -
actually, out
of the 150 of us in year twelve, there were maybe four major
groups, but we
all interacted and hung out with each other so much, it didn't
really matter.
We wore uniforms, but even outside of school, or on free dress
days clothes
were not that big an issue. Maybe schools here in Australia are
more laid
back than other places - or maybe just Australia is more laid
back then
other places.
But yeah, that's my bit
Ange
*Mark* Haven't heard from you in ages. Thanks for the post.
Anyone want to post about their high school experience, please
post, and we may put all your posts in a section about high
school memories.

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the Degrassi Digest and I'm really happy to be able
to chat with other Degrassi fans!! I live in Sydney, Australia
and I'm a huge fan of the shows!!!
My favorite character is Kathleen, and my favorite episodes are:
1) the game show--- involving kathleen's alcoholic mother
2) the episode where joey's friend gets beat up (i forgot his
name) by his dad, because joey drank the guy's fathers coke
("pop")
>>Yes, my real name is Caitlin Ryan. I'm 17 years old, and I live in Australia.
Cool! I live in Australia too... I live in Greenacre (Bankstown area of Sydney) whereabouts do you live Caitlin?? Degrassi should come back eventually, as it has been replayed 3 times, since my existance on this planet! Degrassi Junior High & Degrassi High were last played in 1995, Schools Out- 1995, and Kids of Degrassi Street- 1994.
So... I'm looking forward to chatting to you all!

I have only recieved a few digests so far, but I love it. I was just wondering which Degrassi kids dated in real life.
*Mark* On one of the Interviews that Ms. Natalie Earl has done
with some Degrassi castmembers, Pat Mastroianni dated Neve
Campbell, who, with her borther Christian, were extras on
Degrassi for the early years. Maureen Deisach (Heather Farrell)
dated Michael Carry (Simon Dexter) in real life, as noted from
one of Natalie Earl's interviews with Degrassi castmembers.

I heard that The Kids of Degrassi Street series was inspired
by the book "Ida Makes a Movie" by Kay Chorao (1976).
Do you know where I can get a copy of this book?
http://www.amazon.com says that it is out of print?
*Mark* Yes it was. Kit and Linda made "Ida Makes a
Movie" as a one time film in 1979, but it later was
developed into the Kids of Degrassi Street in 1981, (a 6 part
series, which grew to 26 episodes over 5 years). About trying to
find the book, go to a children's library or used book stores, in
the children's section. Is it a Canadian author and Canadian
book? Try to contact her.

Hi Everyone,
I'm a new subscriber living right outside Washington, DC in the
US. I went back and read all of the archived issues and have a
few comments on a couple of things.
1) I, too, saw the episode The All Nighter that evol mentioned Maya saying that people affected by Spina Bifada can have kids. I remember her saying that as well. They were discussing the fact that some of them went to the movies without Maya because they did not think she could get into the theatre with her wheel chair.
2) I have seen the show Ready or Not. Although I think it's
cute, I do not
think it compares to Degrassi.
3) I also saw the teen soap Swans Crossing with Sarah-Michelle Gellar from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Did anyone else ever see this? This was the first acting experience for Mira Sorvino. She starred as the rich teenager Milla.
3) The twins, Heather and Erica, played by Angela and Maureen Deseich - I noticed a difference between something in their facial features that helped me tell them apart. My question is, did they sometimes switch roles?? I'm not sure I remember which one, but I seem to remember one of them always playing the character that was going thru the most traumatic experience at that time and that they switched who they played.
4) Go to http://us.imdb.com/M/title-substring?title=Degrassi&tv=both This is part of the Internet Movie Database. You will see links for all three series (although DJH and DH are listed as the same show, just with a title change in 1989), Degrassi Talks, plus the movie School's Out. It will give you a cast list. You can click on the actor's names and see what other movies, etc. they've been in, click on their biography, or sometimes even find out what they are doing now.
Also, I noticed on this site that Nicole Stoffman's character is listed as Stephanie Kaye (Kobolowski) and Duncan Waugh's is Arthur Kobolowski. Why did they have different last names??
5) According to IMDB.com, Degrassi was mentioned in the movies Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy.
-RedRose
*Mark* 2 major comments...Stephanie Kaye took her mum's maiden
name, and Arthur took his dad's last name. About Maureen and
Angela Deisach switching roles, in one Degrassi episode,
"Sealed With a Kiss", look carefully at the very
beginning, because for a split second, Erica went to see Doris
Bell, and Doris got her mixed up, and she said something like I
hate being mixed up with my sister. For a split second, you see
Erica in the office, and talking with Doris Bell, and getting mad
at her for not telling the difference, and when Erica gets mad,
she says she gets mad for people not telling them apart, we see
Erica reciting her lines, then you see Heather (who is supposed
to be Erica) still continuing with her lines, then it is back to
Erica storming out of the office into the Degrassi hallway, and
Doris Bell is shown feeling all guilty for not telling the twins
apart. This is a perfect example of the twins playing tricks even
when acting. This was in Season 2, Degrassi, Heather (Maureen
Deisach) had her
hair 2 inches longer than Erica (Angela Deisach). Heather
(Maureen) also had a yellow stain on her front teeth that Erica
(Angela) did not have. Heather (Maureen's eyes) were more round,
bigger teeth...those are some differences. Thanks for your
comments.

In the Degrassi high episode where Spike really likes Snake,
and
asks him to the formal, they show Spike at home with Emma. What
happened
to Spike's mom?? Was Spike living with her mom then or was she
living on
her own?? Also in the episode where Liz has flashbacks of her
mom's
ex-boyfriend molesting her, she is seen talking to Spike at
Spike's
house. Was Spike still living with her mom then or not??
*Mark* It was sort of ambiguous, but we can assume that she
could not afford to live on her own with Emma. I guess her mum
was not shown, but if she did live on her own, there would
probably be an episode on her struggle.

Subject: Degrassi rocks!!
Hello to all my fellow Degrassi lovers! My name is Macarena,
I'm 26, I
live in Saskatoon Saskatchewan and I have been a fan since Kids
of
Degrassi. I just recently got cable and have been able to watch
all the
episodes from Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High. I haven't
seen
them in years so I'm in heaven!
I read Mark's paper tonight and I have to say it's quite good.
I have been trying to explain to people the
similarities between the two shows. I actually like 90210 a lot
(pre-college days) but Degrassi is still my favourite. I
appreciate the
show's honesty and integrity and love the fact that it is
realistic.
The fact that I'm Canadian has something to do with my love for
Degrassi
too. I guess I'm proud that Canada can boast having produced such
awesome material - a legacy, if you will.
Does anyone else feel Canada has a lot to offer as far as pop
culture is concerned? We have excellent
music, artists, writers, television shows, actors and movies
(Highway 61
is still one of my favorites).
Anyways, sorry to digress, I'm just terribly excited to have
found these web pages and the Digest. I will
reread Mark's paper later and possibly share some insights.
I have a couple of more comments. First, I agree with Olivia
Mongard that Caitlin Ryan looks a lot like Sarah McLachlan. This
is interesting
considering that my husband finds Stacie Mistysyn very attractive
and Sarah not. Hmmmmm. (just thought I'd share that) Second, I am
also very
interested in learning where the actors are today. I am totally
envious of those people who have seen some of the players on the
street or at
school. The chances of running into anyone in Saskatchewan are
pretty slim I think. Oh well. Has anyone ever met them and hung
out with
them? Well, that's it for now but I will be back!
To Mark- your work on these pages is incredible! To all
Degrassi followers out there- keep
up the great conversation and keep Degrassi alive!
ciao- Macarena
*Mark* Thanks SO MUCH for your compliments. I personally think
both Stacie Mistysyn and Sarah McLachlan (both Canadian) are
beautiful, when they both have their long hair. Actually, that
paper is my introduction my Honours Thesis this year, which will
be more of a world survey of adolescent dramas.

Ravi,
This is the last time I will post to the digest on this
subject. I
don't think this is the place to get into a debate over your
opinion vs.
mine, seeing as this is a degrassi mailing list, and the subject
we are
debating is clinging only by the barest thread to having to do
with
Degrassi. I would be more than happy to continue our discussion
if you
wish, just direct further comments to my personal e-mail address
so that
the rest of the people who get this digest don't have to sift
through
our messages to get to the subject at hand. My address is
purslane@hotmail.com.
Before I begin, though, let me tell you first of all that you
know
absolutely nothing about me. You don't know if I am disabled, if
I am
black or white, if I have any non-physically disabling disorders,
anything. You are assuming that I am a perfectly healthy, able,
average
kind of person, who simply cannot relate.
Well, let me inform you, you are wrong. Everone has problems.
There is no one who can say that
they are perfect and well adjusted in every way, and are never
unhappy
about anything. Everyone wishes that something were different,
that
they could be accepted by more people, but that just isn't how
life
works, whether you want it to or not.
Everyone does not like everyone else. For example, you do not
like me, and you do not accept the fact
that I have a different opinion on your favourite subject than
you do.
You do not accept that it's OK to have this differing opinion.
Therefore, you are oppressing me. You are trying to argue with me
and
change who I am, rather than accomodate me. See how ridiculous it
can
get? Everyone who is the least bit different from the
"average white
male" thinks that they are oppressed and deserve some sort
of special
treatment. No matter how they are different, it's all the same.
Women,
minorities, overweight people, disabled people, poor people...the
list
could go on for hours. Everyone thinks that they are oppressed,
and
that someone owes them something!
No one owes you anything. No one has to give you one damn
thing. People need to stop whining about how they
are oppressed and just go about their daily business! It's one
thing if
there is some gross injustice done to you (ie, if you, Ravi, went
into a
business and applied for a job that you are perfectly capable of
doing,
physically, mentally, and you have enough education, and the
interviewer
told you straight out that they didn't want to hire you due to
your
disability). Then you have every right to take action. But for
goodness' sake, you are getting all freaked out over a fictional
story
based on a fictional character that one person on this internet
of
millions wants to write for her own personal edification! It
isn't an
article for JAMA! No one is going to publish this story for
educational
purposes! Its a story that someone wanted to write for fun, and
you
don't have the right to come along and make that person feel bad
because
her ideas for the story don't jive with yours. If you are so
adament
about how you want the story written, why don't you leave her
alone and
write one for yourself? No one is stopping you, and no one said
that
just because a character has been written about you can't use
that
charater again.
>However, I think it is more useful to make my comments now so that any story that is ultimately written might consider these comments.
Again, it's not your story, so leave it alone.
>Leaving aside Angela's attempt to psychoanalyze me (which I feel is very inappropriate and is often a common, reactionary response when disabled people draw attention to oppression)
Um, I doubt you understand what psychoanalysis is if you think
that saying "you can't be a very happy person if you go
through life thinking
that every single thing is discrimination and that everyone is
out to get you," is my attempt at psychoanalysis. Its a
simple observation,
and a pretty accurate one in my opinion. And it would be my same
comment if you were black saying that everyone is a racist, or a
smoker
saying that everyone is trying to make smoking difficult for you,
or overweight saying that everyone is against you....
>In fact, there was a disabled guy in the story who is interested in Maya and she chooses the non-disabled guy over the disabled guy. Angela completely ignores this dimension of the story.
So? Is she not allowed to choose a non disabled guy? Hmm...sounds oppressive to me...
>Moreover, while it is not entirely clear, the teaser leaves one with the impression that it is the fact that the non-disabled guy does not have a disability that leads Maya to find him more attractive than the disabled guy.
So what? Maybe she doesn't find guys with disabilities
attractive. Bearing in mind that this is a fictional character we
are discussing,
who knows where her mindset is? The disability that the other guy
had was never even brought up. One can assume that it was very
debilitating, and that he would require a lot of care from his
wife just as easily as one can assume he has only a minor
disability, and that the
only evidence of his disability is that he needs canes to walk.
Maybe Maya didn't want to spend a lot of her life taking care of
her husband.
Maybe she just found non-disabled guys more attractive. Just
because she is disabled doesn't mean she's just like you are,
Ravi. She doesn't
have to automatically be a militant opression-fighter. You sound
to me like someone who would go out with a DISABLED guy just
because he is
disabled, and not consider a non-disabled one.
>Imagine if a Degrassi story were written where a Black woman preferred a White guy over a Black guy for no other reason than he were white.
So what? Maybe she doesn't find black men attractive. Maybe in
your
little world you like everyone to love each other and live
happily ever
after, but it doesn't always happen that way.
>If there were some other reason why Maya preferred the non-disabled guy, then I would not have a problem with it, although I think the story would make more sense and be less offensive with just one guy.
Well, Maya is a popular girl. Do you begrudge her a choice? I don't see how it would make more sense. Sometimes more than one guy can like a girl at a time. And anyway, even if the story did contain only one guy, unless he was disabled, I'm sure you would have been offended anyway.
>But she leaves the impression, however, that it is better for Maya to be dating a non-disabled guy vs. a disabled guy and that is where the problem lies.
I only got the impression that Maya prefered the non-disabled guy, and I got no impression of whether that was for better or worse.
> Simply from a literary, not political, point of view, I think the story would be far better with just one guy, disabled or not, who Maya finds attractive for other reasons like common interests.
Then that is your opinion. I personally like the element of suspense and the emotional roller coaster that Maya probably endured in making her decision. It makes for a more interesting story.
>Interestingly, Kyra Levy herself reports, in an article I hope to somehow get to Mark Polger soon, that she had a miserable time in high school and faced a lot of hostility because of her disability. She also faced discrimination from talent agencies. So I don't think this is something that comes from paranoid feelings.
No, but I think a lot of people hated high school, and as you know, kids are mean and everyone gets picked on. I got picked on, too.
>Having a disability does not make life any more difficult if society were totally accessible.
If, if, if! Well, it isn't, so therefore it makes life more difficult. Society is trying, and it's come a long way. It isn't financially feasable to tear down all the buildings so that everyone can get to it. The fact remains that you are a minority, and therefore, the majority is accomodated. It may not be right, but that's how it is. You yourself were saying how horrible it was that people were institutionalized and sterilized, and now, maybe 50 years later, you expect everything to be accessable and ready to go! Well, things take time, and even in my lifetime I've seen change. Give society a break.
>And no, I disagree that everyone places not having a disabled child as a priority. Not to mention that there is a big distinction between being unhealthy and having a disability.
I have met lots of people in my life, and I have never met one who hoped that their child would be disabled as opposed to able. And I realize that there is a distinction, that is why I put both "Healthy" and "Able" down as separate descriptive terms.
>I don't think it is ignorant at all to want to have children even if there is a risk that a child *might*be disabled. That is the choice of the people involved and a completely legitimate one.
Sure it isn't ignorant to WANT a child. Besides, I never said if there was a risk that the child MIGHT be disabled that they shouldn't consider it. I said if there was a HUGE CHANCE BASED ON GENETIC TESTING that it would irresponsible. Adopt in that case if you want a child.
>Some people would take it; some would not. It's a personal choice.
Right. And if you could lessen a child's chance of being disabled and you didn't take it, you would be selfish. I am skipping over your entire tangent on determining risk factors and insurance companies requiring abortions, etc, because I think it is irrelevant and far beyone anything I said about people making educated choices on having children. For the record, I am against abortion for any reason short of to save your own life. And we will never live in a world where an insurance company can force someone into having an abortion.
>The Globe and Mail, Canada's leading newspaper, reported a case where a doctor told a mother that she had a "monster inside her" (likely a child similar to Maya!).
This is a gross assumption, and one I seriously doubt seeing as how spina bifida is a fairly common disability, and one the doctor probably comes across on if not a regular basis, at least often enough to keep it from being an unheard of thing. If this is a true story, I don't care what the baby's problem was, it was cruel for the doctor to say, and he needs to be reprimanded. However, the child may have had a disorder similar to spina bifida, anencephaly, in which case the child could live for only minutes outside of the womb. Although this child is not a monster, there is no possibility of any type of existence for him/her. ULTRASOUND CAN distinguish the severity in many of these cases.
>I don't agree that giving birth to a disabled child is irresponsible. Maya wouldn't be around if one accepts this logic.
I don't agree, either, and I certainly don't know who could have said such a thing. I never said it was irresponsible to give birth to a disabled child. I merely said that if the parents are fairly certain in advance of getting pregnant that their child will probably have MAJOR BIRTH DEFECTS (as opposed to a minor disability like Maya's), then they are irresponsible to go ahead with it anyway.
I totally agree with you that in some cases disabled people, along with many other groups, are oppressed and discriminated against. I agree that this is wrong. Back to the beginning, the author of the story about Maya, I believe, did not bear you or any other disabled person any ill will, consciously or subconsciously, and neither do I.
I hope that this can clear up any confusion you may have. Again, please direct any responce to me personally as opposed to this list.
Angie-
*Mark* OK OK....first of all...both are you ARE NOT going off
topic, but I think you are both right. Unless you are a white
male, Christian, and middle class, then everyone in the world is
oppressed. Both of you are talking about a fictional story and I
think there has been too much overanalyzing. Natalie Earl did not
mean to offend anyone, and neither did Angie. I agree with you
Angie, my mum always told me. THE WORLD OWES YOU NOTHING. I live
by that. No one is truly equal, we are all discriminated, based
on age, gender, religion, ethnicity, disabilitity, or not being
disabled, and our physical looks. Both of you did not go off
topic, but I think you both took what you said too seriously, and
perhaps got offended. I appreciate all comments made regarding
the Fan Fiction episode about Maya preferring a non-disabled guy.
Maybe on a superficial note, she is more attracted to the
non-disabled guy or maybe Natalie Earl has done this for reasons
that are pertinent to her fan fiction writing. I think we are all
oppressed, some more than others, but there is no equality
amongst people. This is ideal, but not realistic. What would Kyra
Levy think of all this???

Today was a monumental day for Joey and Caitlin because their
daughter Sabrina was turning 13. Sabrina asked for a BBQ and Pool
Party so they spend all morning adorning the back yard in purple
streamers and balloons. The twins Justin and Jacob's were the
first to arrive, bringing their parents Heather and Derek
(Wheels). Next came Chloe with her parents Archie (Snake) and
Melanie. It was hard to tell who appreciate the party more the
adults or the kids.
The kids immediately ditched their parents to goof off in the pool. Justin and Jacob showed off the dare devil dives they learned at the YMCA. Chloe, the glamour puss, didn't want to get wet because it would mess up her hair and make up (she eventually got pushed in anyway). Sabrina performed a song and dance recital. She borrowed strobe lights and DJ equipment borrowed from Joey's work, it created the illusion of a music video.
The adults gathered around the barbecue grill, reminiscing about the good old days and admiring each others kids. Joey, Archie, and Derek couldn't believe how time had flown by. It seemed like only yesterday they were causing havoc at Degrassi Junior High. Now they were helping their own teenagers cope with the pain and indignity of adolescence. Joey is now a radio disc jockey, Archie is an archeologist. Derek manages a group home for "troubled" boys.
Sabrina choose a banana-strawberry birthday cake and chocolate
chip ice cream. She received a mountain of presents but her
favorite was a music box that played Once Upon a December from
Anastasia. As Sabrina blew out her
thirteen candles, Joey whispered to Caitlin "You were
alittle older than Sabrina when we first started dating . . . you
are even prettier now than you were back
then". THE END
