Subject: Question for Canadian Degrassi fans
In California, it was hard to find anybody who watched or even knew about
Degrassi. Were they big stars in Canada? Could you go to the news stand and
find teen magazines devoted to them, the way that Madonna and New Kids were
admired here? Also, how can I write to my favorite stars? Do you know if
Shane, Simon, or Rick have girlfriends because I am available.
*Mark* I only saw information about Degrassi Junior High in a teen magazine talking
about
the series, rather the actual characters in the show. The show's content was emphasized
more
than the characters. Television and its characters are very different than
in the United States.
You were able to write to them when the show aired, but Playing With Time, the production
company which
produced Degrassi no longer exists, it is now more difficult to write to Degrassi actors.
You can always try looking for their addresses and phone numbers at
http://www.canada411.sympatico.ca

Subject: information about Neil Hope
Hi,
Is there information about the actor Neil Hope (wheels) about what he's
doing today? I would like information about that show, and how could I
buy the last episodes of degrassi: school out?
Thank you, Einat
*Mark* Please to go my links page, and go to Sharon's site, because she will
have updated information on Degrassi actors. For "School's Out", you can
purchase it at McNabb and Connolly in Toronto, or from Direct Cinema
Limited in Santa Monica, California. The phone numbers can be found
at http://www.degrassi.org/pertinentaddresses.htm

Subject: Degrassi As a Role Model

We've all affectionately snickered at Degrassi for covering every teenage
trauma known to man kind. It was only a matter of time before every
character was victimized in one form or another. At first it seems funny,
however I believe that there was genius behind the madness. Never before
and possibly never again has there been a show that was gutsy enough to
touch such controversial topics. Degrassi could have taken the easy way
out (and have made more money) by emulating lowest-common-denominator shows
like "Full House" or "Family Matters". But they didn't.
Chances are that every teenager on Earth can identify with the characters
and their problems. Degrassi served as a role model for me. I grew up
in an environment similar to Kathleen and Rick's. Degrassi was more than a
show for me, it was therapy. Reassurance that I was not the only kid on
earth going through these problems.

Hi my name is Carie I heard the "Girl named Spike" song by Skankin Pickle
and developed a serious interest in actually seeing an episode of Degrassi
High. now i have seen only 4 or 5 episodes but find the show very
interesting. because of the rare times i can find the show on cable (TRIO)
i haven't seen many. I would like to see more of this "real" show.
Saying Adios from Texass,
Carie Winkle
*Mark* Check out our sites. We are all in a webring, and there is useful
information so you can purchase or rent some episodes from the Degrassi
series. Chances are at your public library, they may even have some episodes.
It is usually catalogued under educational television dramas for children
and adolescents.

First of all, I really have to congratulate you on your awesome site!!!
Kudos to you for the excellent resource site you've put together!
I moved to the Toronto area a year ago, and have tried fruitlessly to find
the schools where the Series (Jr High and High) were filmed. After seeing
your site, I've checked out the address for Vincent Massey, and it makes
sense.
But the location of High doesn't. You say it's on Pape&Morden. That
intersection doesn't exist on any map I have.
I went to the Centennial College website and I think I found the campus
you were referring to. Check out:
http://www.cencol.on.ca/about/bell.htm
Let me know if that is the right campus. From the photo I think it is.
If you remember when the Zits were shooting their video, for example, or
when Lucy, Joey, the twins were sneaking into the schoo, the exterior
in this photo looks possible.
Please help!
*Mark* Degrassi Junior High is really a school called Vincent Massey Junior
School at 68 Daisy, between 26th and 30th street (or Ave), off Lakeshore
Boulevard. Degrassi High is part of Centennial College. It is located at
the corner of Carlaw and Mortimer, but the back is best seen at Pape and
Mortimer. Both buildings look exactly the same, but the Degrassi Junior
High building lacks the trees it used to have when the show was filmed
there 10 years ago.

In the degrassi.org web site I saw a reference to an address for the
Degrassi Student Newspaper. This is the first time I have heard of
this. Can anyone fill me in about this newspaper?
Barry
*Mark* It was yearly newspaper that came out with every new season of the show, I
believe.
I have all 5 newspapers. They were mainly for teachers, to be used in classrooms and it
talked about
issues that were based on the show, and how they can be applied to real life.

I am interested in obtaining a copy of this PBS documentary, Please provide
me with information about obtaining it. Thanx, Par :-)
*Mark* Degrassi-Between Takes was a CBC documentary, so I do not know if it can be
purchased from the list
of film distributors, but I can tell you it is 30 minutes, narrated by the
famous Canadian Journalist, Peter Gzowski, and it is full of technical
information about the show, Playing with Time, and some of the actors. It was made in
1989.

I seem to remember when I was a kid that there was a series called "the
Degrassi Street Gang." Maybe I am completely off, but could someone let
me know if this is true?
Thanks!
Angie
*Mark* The show was called "The Kids of Degrassi Street".
It was a 5 year series, 26 episodes, approximately 5 episodes per season.
The first episodes was made in 1979, as a short film, but in 1981, the short film turned
into a 6 part series, which then was renewed until 1986.

DEGRASSI WORLD #3 (As Degrassi University): Caitlin & Snake as College
Sweethearts.
(Note: Remember, all the characters magically attend Degrassi University.
Snake is at the university dining hall waiting for Caitlin, his girlfriend,
to get off her shift as a cashier. Snake is half napping, half reflecting
about his life. His thoughts appear as a stream-of-consciousness.)
It's been three years since Degrassi High graduation. Snake attended
Degrassi University as a freshman, took a year off to travel, then resumed
his education. Snake sold his car and redeemed his life savings to backpack
through Europe. He felt that "the University of Life" was an important
stage in his development as an independent adult.
Snake keeps his distance from Joey and Wheels because he feels that they
were a bad influence. Joey is loafing around in the Drama and Music
Department. The Zit Remedy has disbanded but he still has big dreams of
fame. He has developed a college band named "Broomheads". Last time I
heard, he was working at the Gap. He is still a playboy, but I know that
deep inside he still loves Caitlin and vice versa.
Wheels has spent almost three years in prison. I hear that he'll be getting
out this summer. I'm rooting for him. Wheels has become a born again
Christian. He has accepted the death of his parents and vows to dedicate
his life to public service, possible as an Alcoholics Anonymous counselor.
Ericka and Heather were so good to him, they brought him home baked muffins
on visiting days. Judging by the way Heather dresses up, I'm tempted to say
that she still likes him.
Just now I've realized what a pushover I was in high school. I got into
lots of trouble because of Joey and Wheels. I actually tried to hide my
intelligence to meet with their "cool" image. As a loner I feel in control
of my life. I loved Europe because there nobody knew me. I could be 100%
anonymous. I could be anything I wanted to be. I returned home with the
ability to assert myself and form my own opinions. My guitar playing has
transformed from Rock to Classical, Blues, and Jazz. More importantly, I'm
studying Archeology and Anthropology.
My relationship with Caitlin came as a total surprise because I was never
interested in her in junior high or high school. I guess I was preoccupied
with Melanie, Spike, and Michelle. I had a college girlfriend my freshman
year but it didn't work out. Caitlin and I had compatible personalities
(Straight A's, clean cut image) but I never envisioned her as a "babe" . . .
until now.
Maya is responsible for getting us together. She gave me tickets to
"Coppelia", a ballet production of the Degrassi University Dance Repertory.
Maya was the costume mistress. Caitlin was a principal dancer. I was
mesmerized by Caitlin's dance ability. Her dancing reveals a passionate,
sensuous side that I had never seen before. Even though I've know her since
grade 1, I felt like I was watching a stranger. I had to have her.
That weekend I took her to the carnival. We acted like children, riding the
ponies and scarfing cotton candy. That night I confessed my love to her.
Before she could respond I kissed her ( I tasted the cotton candy on her
tongue). Caitlin blushed like an angel, so I bear hugged her. From then on
we were unseparable.
Caitlin works at the dining hall so she can pay for her journalism supplies,
like cameras and video tapes. She is on the newspaper and yearbook staff,
however her career interest is Broadcast Journalism. I could totally
picture her as a news anchorwoman!
Besides Maya, Caitlin has a few classes with Melanie and Kathleen. Maya is
studying Physical Therapy. Melanie is studying Culinary Arts and Kathleen
is studying Sociology. Melanie and I used to be a serious couple. However,
she dumped me to go out with Arthur. Being a millionaire, he could buy her
anything she wanted. Kathleen is dating Rick.
Maya was pursued by a guy named Doug but she refuses to go out with him.
Doug, like Maya is wheelchair bound. She doesn't want to be stigmatized as
a "disable couple". She has fought prejudice all her life. She has made it
very clear that she wants to marry a non-disabled man and have non-disabled
children. THE END
In the next episode of Degrassi World, Stephanie Kaye gets her own cable
access show (move over Wayne's World!).
