Hi Everyone,

I remember seeing a few years back on PBS a documentary of some sorts that
showed how the show Degrassi was made. It showed how the cast and crew got
along. I don't really remember most of it but there was one scene in which
the cast was fooling around and trying to meditate. They were laughing and
standing in a circle with one person ( I think it was Joey ) in the middle.
He was spinning and they were supposed to catch him if he fell. Has anyone
ever seen this?

Latina

*Mark* The 30 minute documentary was called Degrassi-Between Takes, produced
in 1989, and narrated by a well known Canadian Journalist, called Peter
Gnzowski. It was a technical look at the series, how many awards it has won,
the actors schedules, some interviews with some of the Degrassi actors.
Amanda Stepto was also seen promoting her book about her character Spike.
What you saw were workshops that Playing With Time held...I think they were
called coping with success...Linda talked a great deal that although some
characters had more speaking roles, they all supported each other. She said,
"Joey is central character, but he would not function without support."
There was much focus of how the episodes reflect the actors real lives.

Hi, I am from Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. They used to have Degrassi on our
PBS station here from 1992-1995, but then took it off. I haven't seen it
anywhere...does anyone have any idea if Degrassi reruns are on TV in Indiana?
Thanks for any info.

Hi there! I'd just like to let you know that I like your site it's pretty
cool. I'm what you might call an avid Degrassi fan and have been since it first aired back in the 80's. My
question to you is, do you know where I can get a copy of Schools Out! on video? I have it already on a shitty
old unclear tape that just isn't worth viewing and I'd really like to have a good copy of it! Do you know if I
could pick it up anywhere?

Thanx for your time M.

*Mark* If you check out my site at http://www.degrassi.org/pertinentaddresses.htm
you can find some companies that do sell the Degrassi series of films. I
think you can contact McNabb and Connolly in Toronto at (905) 278-0566
or you can call Direct Cinema Limited in Santa Monica, CA (where I
purchased many Degrassi Junior High episodes in the the 1980's.)
Their number is: 310-636-8200

I didn't have much luck with receiving responses from the actors. I
wrote to Dan Woods, Darrin Brown and Siluck Saysanaysy but got no
response (I wrote to them c/o Playing with Time). Also the same with
Linda Schuyler. However, I got two responses from Susin Nielsen each
time I wrote to her and I also got responses from two authors of the
Degrassi books, Catherine Dunphy and Katherine Ellis (who also wrote
some of the episodes and appeared in a couple of minor roles).

In response to your post about people having met Degrassi actors. I
know Amanda Stepto, we share a couple of mutual friends. I guess there's
no way of putting this diplomatically but I'll try. She's very high on
herself(to put it mildly). She's also very fake and seems to get around
quite a bit and as was mentioned about Stacie...she makes sure everyone
around knows who she is (or was). Of course this is only my opinion(well actually mine and a few other
people I know), but I just though I'd share my experience.

TRAY-C

*Mark* As I have only met two Degrassi actors, and have corresponded with three, they have been helpful to me.
Thanks Barry and TRAY-C for your posts.

hi

when was the first episode of degrassi junior high aired and when was it
taken off the air at Canada. How about Degrassi Talk?? Was the series
made by public television in Canada associated with boston WGBH.
Do you know if there is any type of projects at work for a degrassi
reunion show? When was the movie school's out filmed at Canada?

Thanks
jay

*Mark* The very first episode of Degrassi Junior High was aired
January 18th,1987. It was not renewed for another season as it ended in
the Spring of 1991. School's Out followed in the fall, and then a 6 part
documentary called Degrassi Talks followed. The series was not produced by
a public broadcasting station in Canada, because at the time we did not have
one, so it was produced by PBS. CBC is a public company, but it is not a
public broadcasting corporation-type network, like PBS. CBC has
commercials, it is just owned by the Canadian government, whereas
PBS does not get funding by advertisers...The people fund the network.
CBC is not affiliated with PBS...but one of PBS's stations is WGBH Boston.
There are no projects as of yet for a reunion show, as many Degrassi actors
have been asked, and they have not been told about it. I do not know when
the film School's Out was filmed, but it did hit the screens in September
of 1991 in Canada.

Wayne,

You are correct. I have never actually seen the episodes you are
talking about, but I have seen other shows with the same format. Some shows
on PBS are done that way. Most of the time you have to switch your TV to
SAP to activate this feature. It is used for the blind and those that have
trouble seeing, such as dark a scene.

Hiya, I always enjoy reading my Degrassi Digests. It's neat reading about the enormous and on-going popularity of
the show, especially in the Miami area and in Australia. If I were enterprising and had the time I would try to
get a Lilith Fair-type of roadshow together which would bring the former Degrassi actors and other Degrassi-related
people together and tour the whole thing in Australia and other places where there are pockets of immense
Degrassi loyalty. I am sure there is a market for this type of thing.

The biggest challenge would be i) convincing the former Degrassi people to be a part of it (because I gather many
just want to move on!), and ii) getting the word out and the marketing of such an even just right, so that there would
be lots of attendance. Another popular aspect seems to be the acquisition of tapes - surely there's a market for
Degrassi paraphernalia. There is lots of demand here in Canada but literally no supply!

Such a road show could include:
- appearances, forums and workshops
- performances, music
- bartering (of tapes)
- a marketplace for taped episodes and paraphernalia,
general stuff for fans and autographs
- the purpose could to be to raise funds to get local
public broadcasters to purchase the rights to air the
series, to get more communities watching Degrassi,
because I think it serves a great purpose.

Anyways, take care,
Betty

*Mark* Excellent idea, but it will be difficult to get Degrassi actors, who have started different career paths. It would be hard for them to take off work to do this...even if they are still in the television industry.
And one needs sponsors so we can get funding...This is a great plan...but it
would be difficult to become a reality. Maybe if this was done right after
the show ended in 1991/92, but it is almost 6 years later. Linda Schuyler
has started her own new production company, and is currently working on
her 2nd season of Riverdale. Who am I to judge? SUBSCRIBERS...feel free to post your comments.

Subject: Crusade to get Degrassi Back on American Television
Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 06:22:05 -0000

To my knowledge Degrassi is not currently being aired on any American
stations. Years ago it aired on PBS via WGBH Boston. Plus rare appearances
on HBO and Nickelodeon.

Join my Degrassi revival crusade by groveling to the following stations:
Nickelodeon/Nick-at-Nite, Lifetime, Disney Channel, Arts & Entertainment
(A&E), VH1, MTV, PBS, HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Independent Film Channel
(IFC), and Sundance. Most of the email addresses are available from my
website at http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/8539/page4.html

Sadly, Degrassi was grossly unrecognized in America. It lacked the
commercial appeal to compete with big-budget shows like Baywatch and 90120.
Speaking of Baywatch and 90210, I feel that they are poor representatives of
the American culture. The Wonder Years and Life Goes On are more accurate
descriptions. The only current comparison (albeit weak) to Degrassi would
be Dawson's Creek (Warner Brothers Network).

Canadians, Australians, and Europeans often have misguided ideas about
Americans. Trust me, nobody lives like the characters on television, not
even the actors themselves. I should know. I live in Los Angeles and used
to be a part-time actor/dancer. I actually appeared on shows like "Buffy
the Vampire Slayer", "Boy Meets World", "Soul Train" and "Step By Step".

To be honest I prefer international shows like Degrassi, Dr.. Who, Are You
Being Served?, Keeping Up Appearances, and Much Music!

DEGRASSI WORLD #1: Simon & Alexa as Newlyweds

This episode of "Degrassi World" takes place after Simon and Alexa's
wedding. Alexa is writing in her journal about newlywed life)

Dear Diary,

Marriage is so amazing! I can't believe that I married my high-school sweetheart. I felt like a fairy tale princess in my bridal gown. Simon looked just like a Ken doll (although he wasn't thrilled about his curly locks hairstyle). We could not afford a honeymoon but that didn't stop us from having fun. One night we stayed watching the entire "Planet of the Apes" series. Well, Simon watched it, I mostly groped him. Speaking of groping . . .

I was so nervous being intimate with Simon for the first time. I mean, in high school we messed around but we never went all the way. So we had to improvised a little. I must have done okay because Simon is always whistling and grinning. Is that what they mean by after-glow?

Simon wants to have a baby right away but I want to wait until we both have good jobs and a few years of college behind us. As it is, we can barely afford to pay next months rent. Simon wants to move to New York so he can pursue his acting and modeling career. Because his jobs are so unpredictable, we mostly rely on my full time job at the mall. I work at a trendy record store so I have to wear sleezy looking outfits, like the kind of stuff that Stephanie Kaye would wear. Hey remember when Stephanie Kaye gave me all those provocative clothes? She wanted them back so she could show off for Simon.

I miss all my friends at Degrassi, back then life was so safe and familiar. Living in the real world is so scary. Sometimes I wake up and "forget" that I am a grown up. Luckily my job is youth oriented. Lunch break is hard because I have to eat by myself at the food court. At Degrassi, lunch time was for socializing and goofing off. I miss the mindless small talk (i.e.Graduation dance, the Gourmet Scum concert).

Simon keeps adopting pets: snakes, goldfish, birds, lizards, etc.. It's like we are living in a zoo. However, I had to draw the line when the mouse escaped and I woke up with a clump of my hair gnawed off. Simon teasingly calls me baldy, my co-workers think that I did it as a fashion statement. Hmm, perhaps when his acting phase dies down, Simon can open a pet store.

Michelle called me the other day to say that she's volunteering at Degrassi Junior High as a Mentor. She is thinking about becoming a teacher so this experience will help her decide. I'm so proud of her overcoming her shyness, she is quite aggressive now. Maybe I should set her up with
Simon's cute cousin.

THE END. Degrassi World Episode written by Natalie J. Earl
