NEWS: A belated Happy Holidays to everyone (Easter/Passover)
I went to Toronto for the holidays to visit family and the school buildings
where Degrassi Junior High/Degrassi High were filmed.
I also went to Degrassi Street and the old Playing With Time storefront.
I will be posting pictures on the site very soon.
I apologize for the tardiness of the Digest, but I am in the middle of
final exams.
MORE NEWS: The mystery person whose butt is flashed in the beginning of the
opening credits for Degrassi High is...Jacy Hunter.
Thank you Rebecca Haines for clearing it up.

Hi
When was the last show of the series? So Spike is the oldest member of
the group?
thanks
jay
*Mark* The last show of the series was "The Last Dance" in the beginning of
1991.Then "School's Out" came out in September of 1991, and immediately
after was the 6 part documentary, "Degrassi Talks"

That's a fine Degrassi related page you've got going there. I'm
Australian and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone under the age of 20 that
doesn't love that show. There's even a few musical groups that write songs about
it, most notably Brian Apples "The Whole Idea" in which direct
references are made to Zit Remedy and a few other Degrassi institutions and
characters. In regard to Heart Break High which is mentioned somewhere on your page.
That's crap. One of the reasons, I think, that Degrassi did so well is
that the actors are almost the right age. Heart Break High, Beverly Hills
90210 and their ilk use 20-25 year old actors. Heart Break High is also a lot
less believable, they tend to go to non realistic extremes and often
quiet suddenly. For instance one episode they must have decided the tackle the
issue of youth sucide. They invented a character, had him attempt
suicide and the whole thing was over and completely forgotten by the next
episode.That's about it.

Hi there,
I've been receiving the Digest for awhile now and it's good to
know that I'm not the only person still watching the repeats
(is it just me, or does it seem like the Degrassi High episode where
Michelle moves out is shown every other week?). I have a
question: I noticed that on the episodes with Kathleen's mother (the
drunk), it's played by a woman whose last name is "Brogren" like Stefan
Brogren. Is that his mother? Why would she play such an unflattering
role? Could they not get anyone else to do it or did she have acting
aspirations as well? Anyway, keep up the great work!
Sincerely, Michelle
*Mark* Sheila Brogren is Stefan (Snake) Brogren's mother. Snake's father,
in the series, is also played by his real-life father as well. I do not know
why she chose to do it, but that is acting. You are trying to portray
someone who you are not, so if you look at it that way, I do not think it
is unflattering at all. I find that she did a great job portraying an
alcoholic.

Is anybody interested in Fan Fiction? Now that Degrassi is off the air,
we should keep it alive by creating our own episodes (Beverly Hills 90210
followed the characters into their college/marriage/career years why can't
we?). I'd like to take off where the show ended and add additional
"adventures" to their junior high and high school years. It's getting
close to their ten-year reunion. Perhaps the "Zits" could make it to MTV or
Much Music. I could envision Spike owning a used book or vintage clothing
store. I could imagine the twins as airline sterwardesses. A variation
would be to "role play", each of us would assume the role of our favorite
character. We'd have to talk and think like them. This could be a regular
part of the news group.
*Mark* That is an excellent idea. If you would like to start, then try it.
I also have a suggestion. At the end of each Degrassi episode, there is a
freeze frame, if any of you can predict the next scene or the next
line/sentence that they are going to say, I can post it.
For example: In The Best Laid Plans: Voula asks Stephanie,
"You weren't going to do anything, were you?" The frame freezes,
Stephanie smiles, but does not say anything. You can fill it in the next
scene or line. Also please post your own future episodes of Degrassi to me,
and I can post them on the site.

Hi Everyone,
First, I would just like to express my thanks to Mark for taking the time to
answer all these questions. I'm sure other degrassi fans besides me like to
read your newsletter. Now, about the image of the butt at the beginning of
the show. I could almost swear that it was Alexa. I have thought that ever
since the beginning of the show. Her hair is blond, long, and slightly waver
and it fights her body frame too!! Does anyone else agree with me? And who
is this character called Amy? I don't seem to remember her. By the way Mark,
I have a suggestion for you. I think you should formulate something in which
Degrassi fans could vote for their favorite episodes or the top 5 that they
like the best. Just an idea!!! :)
Latina
*Mark* Rebecca Haines, who played Kathleen Mead for 5 seasons on Degrassi has just
e-mailed
me to tell me that it was Jacy Hunter, who played Amy, whose butt was flashed in the
beginning of the theme song of Degrassi High. I am going to post something on my site
where one can submit their favourite Degrassi Junior High/Degrassi High episodes
as soon as my exams are finished. Thanks for the suggestion!

this might be a really simple question for some of you to answer: what
is the name of the girl on degrassi with the redhair in a 4 spike
mowhawk? she is in the background in lots of the drgrassi high
episodes. she has a few speaking lines in the episode where claude
kills himself. if anyone knows please help.
jesse
*Mark* That character has more than a few speaking lines. She is Danah-Jean
Brown, who played Connie Jacobs on the Kids of Degrassi Street, and Trish on
Degrassi Junior High/Degrassi High. She always had red hair,
long and straight (except seasons 1 and 2,when it was permed), and by
Season 5, she spiked it up into 4 spikes. She was in "The Whole Truth",
Smokescreen", and
"Twenty Bucks", also "Showtime Parts 1 and 2", and she is the one who
says
the second to last line of the series. She asks Mr. Raditch to dance, and
he says , "I'd love to."

This is a question to everyone who has had the pleasure of meeting
Degrassi stars in person. Which ones seem to be the most friendly and
which ones seem the least friendly? Also, which ones seem to answer fan
mail the best?

*Mark* Everyone please respond. This can make a good discussion.
I have only Pat Mastroianni, and Rebecca Haines in 1991. I do not remember
them very well, but they seemed pleasant. Rebecca has e-mailed me a few times
and she has been helpful with some technical notes about the show. Dan Woods
(Mr . Raditch) has been helpful and so has Byrd Dickens (Scott). An
aquaintence told me when she met Stacie Mistysyn, she said that she showed
off about her work on Degrassi, and that her ego was very large. However, she
could have mis-interpreted her totally. Check out past issues of the Digest
to see what others have mentioned about Degrassi stars that they have met,
or bumped into.

Subject: Degrassi for the Blind
Date: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 08:20:57 PDT
Another question. A few years back, I saw several episodes of Degrassi
Junior High (or maybe Degrassi High, I'm not sure), on one of my local
PBS stations down in Miami, that were very odd. The episodes seemed to
be made for the blind. The episode's plots seemed like the normal ones
except that there was a running commentary in the background describing
the physical actions on screen. It was almost like when you read a
script and you have actions written down between the lines. At no time
do I remember the shows be identified as episodes for the blind but that
is the only purpose that I can think that they could serve. It was an
interesting format but could get very annoying at times. Sometimes the
actor's dialouge got drowned out by the commentary. Are there any other
PBS or Canadian viewers that remember seeing these episodes? Or does
anyone know what the origin of these episodes were?
F.Y.I. the channel that I saw these shows on was Channel 17 (WLRN ?) in
Miami, Florida. Oddly enough its sister station Channel 2 (WPBT) also
of Miami never played these episodes, only the normal ones.
WAYNE ROACHE
Fort Bragg, NC
*Mark* I have never seen episodes like that. The only difference among
Degrassi episodes, is that cable stations cut parts of the episode out for
their commercials, while PBS has the full episodes.
That "script direction" seems interesting.
Thanks for your post.

Hey, great idea this mailing list, it has lots of cool info that you
dont get on the normal everyday sites. Degrassi is quite popular, but
maybe i should really say WAS quite popular. The nation that aired it
(ABC) has decided not to renew the rights EVER. And i have sent many
e-mails and letters to them trying to get them to buy th rights to it.
Degrassi was a fantastic show and i have the last episode on tape which
i just keep watching over and over and over again. Not one episode of
Degrassi has aired here in over 3 years. Its really quite annoying cause
the show was so great, now we just have Rugrats and Captain Planet in
that timeslot (dont come close to the greatness of Degrassi!).
