Is Degrassi still aired anywhere?

*Mark* The Degrassi Series ended in 1991, but due to the wonders of syndication it can be seen running back to back daily in some countries. I am not sure about the United States, but I know Degrassi can be seen in Canada on the cable network called Showcase between 7:00pm-8:00pm. As for the United States, try to look for Degrassi on cable networks, rather than the major networks, ABC (American Broadcasting Corporation), NBC, CBS, or FOX. Degrassi was broadcast on PBS for the duration of the five year Degrassi Junior High/Degrassi High series. In earlier Digests, it was discovered that the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) just lost their rights to re-broadcast Degrassi again. Perhaps their contract has ended with syndication rights. Try your American cultural cable network stations, like Lifetime, PBS, A&E, Showcase, Showtime. Good Luck!

Hi! Last night I was watching part of Degrassi Junior High...It was the episode where Arthur has a wet dream, he doesn't understand what was happening to him, so he tried to find answers in a book. No luck. Dr.Sally the sex therapist has a call in show on the radio, so Arthur decides to call her to ask her about his wet dream. Well..The lady who plays Dr.Sally is a sex therapist in real life. She now has a call in sex show on the WTN (women's television network) channel (21..in Canada) on Sunday nights. So those of you who did not not recognise Dr.Sally or did not know who she was..you now know!

Rachel

*Mark* I believe that the actress who played Dr. Sally was Sue Johanson, and I did not think that she was a sex therapist in real life, but if you know that she is a sex therapist for WTN, that is interesting. Thank you for your post.

Who exactly was Degrassi? During some episodes (A new Start) you can see an old picture on the back of the Degrassi handbooks. Why was Degrassi important enough to have a street named for him?

Tracy Ernest

*Mark* Well Tracy, I've done some research on your interesting question and I have found in the book, Toronto: No Mean City, by Eric Arthur, that De Grassi street was named after Alfio De Grassi. Alfio was a well known merchant, insurance agent, and prominent mason in 1870's Toronto. I love to do research and I thank you for your question.

Hmmm...I was wondering..On the Degrassi Jr. High series..Was spike pregnant in real life or was it just a fake pregnancy for the show?? Rachel

*Mark* Amanda Stepto, who played Christine "Spike" Nelson was definitely not pregnant in real life. When interviewed one time, she said she was still a virgin when they portrayed her character as pregnant. Thank you for your post.

Its seems like most people who've seen Schools Out really liked it, but I thought it was a dissappointing ending. I think that the series would have been better off ending with "One Last Dance". At first I was kind of upset the show's creators with ending Dregrassi High after only two seasons, but the more I thought about it, the more I came to admire the artistic integrity of what they had done. It left the charactors in high school forever, and also seemed to resolve the Joey-Catlin thing, which had been going one since the 2nd season of DJH. Schools Out on the other hand, had what I feel is was a very poor ending. It didn't feature many of the best charactors, or had them only in minor roles. Also many charactors seemed to have no role other than sitting around and getting drunk or stoned. In the movie, Wheels has become basically the ultimate in white trash, and Joey is back to being an asshole, which basically undoes all of the charactor progress these two went through throughout the show. I also found the profanity to be somewhat out of place, since the strongest thing said on the shows was "broomhead" (except for that one "bitch") Overall, I though the whole thing was needless.

That's just my opinion though

*Mark* actually I agree with you. I thought School's Out ended sadly. Alexa and Simon were obviously going to get married. I found it sad that Lucy became blind, and the three best friends Joey, Snake, and Wheels totally broke up their friendship. I also thought it was really stupid of Joey to cheat on Caitlin, as she loved him so much, that she would give up University for him. I guess the film shows that there are no real happy endings in real life. Degrassi was very realistic in the fact that high school friendships do not always last a lifetime. People change, as did Wheels, Snake, and Joey. The film was controversial because there was swearing, & semi-nudity. It was Degrassi, but with a rougher edge and a more adult context. I think the film shocked everyone with its really explosive ending. Thank you for your insights on School's Out

Hi. I'm a bit new to the digest, so sorry if anyone's asked my first question or two about a zillion times already. Has anyone ever thought about actually doing an honest-to-Glenda DEGRASSI Frequently Asked Questions list? I think it could be a good document. If no-one has, I might be up to the job, but I'll wait until this is answered before I say more. And am I the only one to have noticed a potential siblingial connection between Spike and Wheels, based on what we know about them?

Ratbat

*Mark* That is a great idea, and this is what this Digest is for. If I cannot answer any of the questions, then it would be really good if people posted their questions, answers, & any other comments to Degrassi_Digest@yahoo.com or post@degrassi.org As you know, I try to answer as many of the questions, but sometimes it is difficult. For people who have missed previous issues of the Digest, I have posted past issues of the Degrassi Digest (1-10) on my Website, which will be coming soon. Thanks for your post. As for your comments about Spike and Wheels being related, it is very possible, because Spike appears to have a single mother, as it is not defined if her mother is married, or divorced. Wheels is adopted, as his adoptive last name is Wheeler, and his birth name is Derek Michael Nelson, so it is possible that Spike Nelson and Derek Wheeler are biological siblings on the show, but of course the plot was never developed. Also remember that Wheel's biological father showed him a photograph of his biological mother and it did not look like Spike's mother. The picture was at least 14 years old, because Wheels was a baby (and in "Parents Night, Season One, he was 14 years old), but it really did not look like Spike's mother. They could be half-siblings, with the same father and different mothers, but it can get complicated. Thank you for your post.

Does anyone have any recent info on Darrin Brown (Dwayne), such as his age, what he's been doing & what he's doing now?

Thanx.

*Mark* When I got in touch with Byrd Dickens a couple of months ago (He played Scott, Kathleen's boyfriend) he told me that Darrin was now part behind the camera, as he now has a career as a crewmember of some Canadian Television Programs.
